@noelle & Alex AlvarezMy character Alex's background had her suffer a near-fatal gunshot injury around November last year, of which she has only recently been able to return to active duty on the force with. But the entire episode of getting shot, nearly dying, and having to go through physical/mental rehab has put quite a bit of a mental burden on Alex, and she's certainly still feeling the effects of what happened even though physically she's back at her old level. Seeing Noelle is a nurse, they might have met during Alex's prolonged stay in the hospital and/or during her trek into rehab to get herself back to her old level. And maybe they've kindled a bit of a friendship or at least some acquaintance of each other in that time. We can have it established already, or perhaps plot a thread set in the recent past that establishes the relation between the two of them. We can be as elaborate or concise as we want, if you're down with the idea :)

You're looking into the eye of the storm Squinting her eyes at the mystery blond, she felt a rock develop inside her stomach that was telling her that there was something extremely fishy about the situation. Call it fight-or-flight, call it primeval instinct… But there was one thing she had learned from her mother, it was the ability to spot a ‘víbora’ – a viper– lurking 'neath the surface.
The cold calculating eyes were a dead giveaway, and Alex knew there was something extremely dangerous hiding behind that gamey smile. ’Alex… Alvarez…’ she exclaimed as she cautiously extended her hand to return the gesture. ’… And I’ll have to disappoint you, they didn’t teach the finer arts of being a ninja at the academy.’ although being able to throw down a smokebomb and splinter a few wrists would’ve come in handy just a few minutes ago.
Looking back at the person Ruby was waving to, the feeling of fear and dread laid itself on her mind even thicker. The man wasn’t there for Alex, she wasn’t important enough to warrant attention from the mob. So that had to mean the amateurish tail was there for Ruby instead, but being seen with her would make her a person of interest to anyone that was willing to listen.
And she couldn’t really be seen with anyone of ill repute, after all her job was to stop the criminals and not fraternize with them in any way. And even though she had nothing on this woman other than vague gut feelings, that gut feeling was strong enough to tell her to find a way out of her predicament.
But walking away wasn’t an option either, still she had the feeling the three stooges still where salty about what happened and would like to catch Alex wandering on her own… ’I don’t really need a tour of this place.’ she knew the shithole inside out and knew what was worth her interest and what wasn’t. ’But how can I say no to coffee if you’re buying?’ putting her hands into her pockets she let out a light little sigh.
If she wasn’t going to walk away from this, at least she could do was try to fish and hopefully catch something interesting.

You're looking into the eye of the storm It didn’t take long for the mysterious woman to start reading her intentions. But she had to give her that, because since the moment the blonde had made her way into the situation Alex had been doing the same thing to her.
”Well I’m thanking you anyways.” she replied at the false-modest refusal to be thanked, everyone wanted to be thanked even if they didn’t say they were. Even people that donated money to philanthropies did it to feel good for themselves. But this woman had done more than just help her, she had stepped up to three armed individuals and without a shred of fear had talked them out of holding up a cop.
What was it with Chicago and always throwing up situations that ranged from the scary to the downright ominous? Here she was, standing in alleyway that had seen more drug deals than rats making it its home. A few minutes ago there were three low-tier gangbangers holding a gun to her face, and now she was standing face to face with someone that looked like she was belonging everywhere but this neighbourhood. Her clothes were too calculated, her attitude was eerily calm in a way that sent a shiver up Alex’s spine.
And in situations like that she erred to believe that it wasn’t out of the sheer kindness of her heart… ”I wasn’t looking for anyone or anything in particular, but you never know what you’ll find when you look beyond the obvious.” it sounded overly philosophical even to her own ears, but despite it being perfect for plaques it also was truth more often than not.
As much as she loved talking to people that had something to hide, her gut feeling told her that there was something not kosher about her saviour and she really wanted her to cut to the chase rather than saunter around and give her everything to see. ”So who have I to thank for the save?” she kept her distance from mystery woman, making the entire tête-à-tête look more like a standoff than a ‘friendly’ conversation.

You're looking into the eye of the storm Every time she had thought a situation had been under control and every potential angle had been accounted for, there was a curveball thrown into her direction to make it clear that there was something about her life that made sure she never got full control over any moment of it.
The blonde woman had walked up to the group of three, but she wasn’t intimidated by ’Larry’ holding a gun to Alex’s face, which could easily shift towards the mysterious woman instead. Every move the woman made felt deliberate, as if she was meant to be there at that specific time, as if it was fate demanding this situation to play out this way.
Her words were direct, yet playful in a way to put off the goons and make them think twice about their own actions. But the thing that stuck in her mind was the authority the woman radiated towards everyone in her general vicinity. Whether it was fear or intimidation, there was a certain intangible quality about her that made it unequivocally clear that she was not to be trifled with. That no single word she uttered was to be put in doubt, unless you were prepared to face the firing squad.
Alex truly didn’t know who this woman was, but it was obvious she was someone extremely important. Important enough that a trio of goons knew that they were better off walking the other way than to try their luck on either the cop or the blonde figure. ”You fucking lucky, chica.” the skinny one uttered in frustration that bordered on genuine fear. ”Next time we see you, we will shoot you.” skinny exclaimed with no uncertainty in his voice, for the spine he seemingly lacked he seemed pretty adamant on killing her if they were to meet again.
And just like that, the small alley was inhabited by two people. Alex and the mysterious blonde saviour that had interjected herself in the disagreement, put her own safety on the line for someone she did not know.
Being the paranoid cop she was, it didn’t take her long to put two and two together. The only reason this woman would stick her neck out for her, was if there was something to gain. ”I guess I should thank you for the save…” she calmly exclaimed, her adrenaline levels dropping and her nerves returning to its default.
Dropping her shoulders, Alex’s eyes further tried to get a read on the mystery woman. Her police mentality getting the better of her in keeping her wary, because that gut feeling in her stomach was telling her she was standing face to face with the devil herself.
And it wasn’t often her instincts had fooled her…

You're looking into the eye of the storm Walking the streets of South Chicago, there always seemed to be uncertainty in the air. There was something ominous that you can’t place but know is bad news, a gut feeling of your primal instincts telling you that there’s bad weather coming your way and you should do your best to find shelter before getting caught in the storm.
Even during the day, the corners and the stoops were populated with people of ill-repute, slingers and gangbangers marking their territory. Even if they didn’t do anything, they were there because else another gang would take the turf meaning that blood had to be spilled to return to the status quo.
But her job was to walk into the eye of the storm, to seek out bad weather because even if there weren’t any arrests to be made, the investigations never end. Every small detail might tally up to a breakthrough, even something minor could end up cascading into something major.
Ordinarily, a 20-something Latina walking around the block didn’t catch an eye, apart from maybe admirers who simply took in what they saw… Perhaps do a few calls, make a few lame offers, but more often than not they knew to stay away from her. Even the women weren’t to be trifled with in hoods like this, if they weren’t attached to a fellow ‘banger they were not to be messed with for other reasons.
Most days she could simply walk a beat, badge hidden so nobody would remember her as anything more than a pretty face. But some days, her curiosity got the better of her. Whether it was a random sound, or something suspect happening inside an alley, sometimes she’d get something that she had to inspect closer. In the hopes of finding that small detail that can make all the difference.
Normally, she’d be in and out with nobody looking for answers…
Sadly it wasn’t one of those times…
‘You’ve walked into the wrong neighbourhood, chica.’ A voice hissed from behind her, multiple sets of footsteps stepping into her direction. Turning to face the trio, it didn’t take an expert’s eye to recognise them as a bunch of gangbangers with bad intentions.
Looking them over behind her sunglasses, she made sure to stay frosty and unintimidated… Although that was easier said than done. ‘It’s a free country, boys.’ she bit back, biting on her tongue and not budging an inch towards the lowlifes. Like dogs, they smelt fear. ‘And please don’t call me ‘chica’…’ Alex really hated being called a chica.
‘This is wolf territory, this is your only warning… Chica.’ The skinniest of the crooks piped in, a piece poorly concealed on the band of his waist and undoubtedly loaded with the safety off. ‘I suggest you take your pretty face and run off, because others aren’t as nice as us.’ The skinny guy continued with his warnings for her safety.
‘Don’t worry, I’m a big girl and I don’t think your friends want any issues with me.’ She calmly proclaimed at the threesome of gangsters. ‘Besides, I’m here for business.’ Behind her shades she squinted her eyes, her lip curling a little to show just that extra bit of confidence that did the trick with your average hood scum.
And it seemed they were convinced that her confidence fit the situation. That is, except a ratty looking hoodrat that could easily be the youngest of the bunch. Young and inquisitive, a dangerous combination of traits for a slinger. ‘I think she’s a cop’ a young voice coming from the ratty faced gangster, his words hollow but still waking something up in the other two.
There was no time to react or flee from the situation, not without catching a bullet. The skinny guy pulling out his piece –wasting a bullet by pulling back the slide- and aiming it at her horizontally. ‘Is that true, chica, you a cop? Because I don’t like cops.’ The skinny one hissed at her, having lost that ‘nice-guy’ persona the instant the situation changed.
‘I suggest you calm down, Larry.’ her arms out of her pockets and in sight of the three stooges to give them no reason to ventilate her. ‘If you put your gat away, I’ll have seen nothing and you can go on your merry little way.’ she didn’t mean to rhyme there, but she was going to roll with it. Her left hand slowly making its way towards her face, to remove the glasses and have some real eye contact. Every chance to humanise herself and make them more reluctant to gun her down in broad daylight.
‘I fucking knew she was a narc, shoot her!’ the ratty one rattled off, wisdom not one of his forte. ‘If she walks, she’ll come back with the entire precinct!’ the kid exclaimed in clear paranoia, but he wasn’t far from the truth.
Rolling her eyes and biting her lip, she shrugged and tried to stay as calm as she could under the circumstances ‘And what do you think will happen if you shoot me?’ she told through her teeth as she could feel her mind going into panic mode. ‘If you shoot, they won’t stop until all three of you are in chains, and trust me if I say it’ll be a one way trip to the chair…’ she bluffed , but she knew that none of them had ever opened a book regarding capital punishment in the state of Illinois.
But despite her words, Curly, Moe, and Larry didn’t drop their stare as Larry’s gun was still pointing right at her head. And at this point she was getting annoyed, and really just wanted to walk away. ‘So, can we call this a misunderstanding and walk away before we make decisions we’re going to regret?’ raising her shoulders she put the ball in the court of the gangbangers.
If they had any sort of brain matter, they’d get the hell out of there and keep walking. Else all four of them would be in real trouble.
And she wasn’t prepared to die in a shitty alley…
