The smile on her lips perhaps helped Max to let the last few clouds in his mind fly away. As if that smile was a sun, shining through the grey clouds to heat one's face. Had you asked Max Madden months ago what he thought of Ruby Blackwood and Jacob, he wouldn't have been kind with his words, and nothing in his words would betray that today he could imagine caring so much about the two criminals. He was truly the worst cop there ever was, but at least he kept doing his job, just purposely forgetting to arrest those two special birds. He felt like he understood her words about trust. That trust had to be mutual. She trusted him to drive as fast as he could to her and Jacob without question to save his friend from death. She trusted him enough that she showed him new layers of herself, allowing herself to cry in his arms rather than holding it back. She trusted him to comprehend what happened with Jacob, that kiss he found so dreadful. And in return he was to trust her. Thinking back at it, he had a hard time placing his trust in the two. He had trusted Jacob enough to bring him on a PD mission with a gun to help him. As for Ruby, did he ever truly trust her? He felt horrified by the thought that perhaps he never did. His mind was unable to recall a moment where he trusted Ruby, making him bound to trust her today. How could he care so much for a woman he had no memory of placing trust in until this day? He was a confused man and needed to settle down his thoughts at some point, being now or later. He couldn't smile himself, but there was a tenderness in his eyes that replaced his lack of facial expression. He closed those eyes at her words, nodding once. "I'll be careful. Call me if you need anything." he brushed a thumb under her eye as his hand still held her face. He lowered that hand a moment later, holding for a second the hand she had so gently put on his own. He pressed it gently, like a heart's pulse before moving away, getting back behind the wheel. He pat Lucius' head and only then was he able to give a quick, light smile at Ruby's through the car window. Eventually he would drive away as soon as she was in the building.

Ruby came out of the car, the cold breeze probably biting her skin. Max wondered why women rarely ever wore coats or some warmer layer over their dresses. As the door closed, Lucius put both of his paws on the edge of the window, looking at the two and barking slightly. Max looked at him, his eyes had softened a bit, so that when his eyes finally met Ruby's, he didn't appear to be as angry as before. He didn't want to scare her by being too angry. If he was, who knew how long it would take them to see each other again. Max knew Jacob would be the reason they would be reunited again, he wouldn't dare remain angry with Ruby if it meant not being able to see Jacob anymore. And stopping to see Ruby, it was a thought he only now considered. It would be stupid to throw their friendship and whatever else there was out the window because of something that happened. Something she claims didn't mean anything. It will be hard for Max to accept it all as it was, a feeling of betrayal reigned in his mind, corrupting his calm state and self control.
He then did what he was too prideful to do in the car, which was to take Ruby in his arms, letting her warm contact do so much more for him than simply brush away most of his anger. All of her guilt, it was enough for him to cut the angry tone and attitude, he couldn't mentally and physically remain her enemy, he couldn't remain that angry man that could let rage consume him over something as futile and childish as a kiss. It will take time for him to forget it happened, and maybe at some point he should attempt to sort it out with Jacob as well. But there was fear looming over his head, a fear that simply told him he didn't want to hear more about it. What was done was done. As he spoke his tone was calm again, the tension was nearly gone, and his muscles were tensing mostly because of the cold. His coat was still in the back of the car. "Thank you for not letting Jacob die and for trusting me." he sighed and moved so he could see her face, putting a hand on her cheek. Now that he thought about it, he truly wished that he wouldn't have to see her cry again. Would any of the words he wanted to say to her make her even more guilty? He wanted to find a way to water them down, so she wouldn't. She felt guilty enough for tonight, he felt like he wouldn't be able to speak again. "I'm always here for both you and Jacob. Don't forget that." He wanted to say one last thing, but those last three words never came out, choking him from the inside.

Those apology, that smile, everything she had done so far should be enough to knock out that anger and send him on a better path. But his mood was set and it was possible that there was no way for him to change it tonight. He wondered why she was sorry about her attitude in the waiting room. Wasn't it normal to be on edge when you weren't sure one of your best friends was going to get through the night or not? He didn't hold her responsible for any of that. It was a normal reaction and she shouldn't apologies for it. He would have snapped back at her and asked her to stop apologizing for everything, but that smile, that sweet smile she was giving him and he was able to notice because of the stop light that gave them a second to breath, collect shattered pieces. He couldn't smile back as much as a part of him wanted to. He kept on driving in silence until they arrived at Ruby's apartment. He parked as close of the building as he could and got out of the car to open Ruby's door. He could feel himself tensed, just wanting to dive into a warm bath to ease his muscles and joints after this stressful night. He waited for Ruby Blackwood to get out, making sure Lucius wasn't going to hop out with her.

The car rolled, and Ruby explained herself. He was making things complicated by being angry and despite his anger still being there he was unable to focus it on anything for much longer. Except maybe the wheel, which he had been scraping his nails against, tugging at the leather and other materials in a way to relieve some of his frustration. He didn't want to be angry at Jacob or Ruby for this. But would it seem like he didn't care if he got angry? Accidents happen, those kind of things can happen too? It was confusing and hard to believe but he had to make an effort and look beyond his first line of thoughts. The truth was that Ruby and Jacob meant a lot to him, and that learning that something as insignificant as a kiss could have happened threw what seemed to be poison in the water. Finally a red light. They weren't far away from her house now, probably only a few blocks away. He leaned back into the seat and finally took the time to look at Ruby Blackwood. She didn't want him to be angry, he could see that. He looked out his own window for a moment before looking back at her. He took a deep breath, his face felt like it was carved in stone, unable to move from his frown and angry eyes. "I'm sorry." it felt like those words were a pain to get out. Why so prideful all of a sudden. "Thank you__for telling me." the pride in him was forbidding him to reach out for her hand. Lucius was looking at him, aware of his master's anger. "I shouldn't have yelled at you." the light turned green, and it took him a few seconds before he saw it and continued to drive.

Uh she needed to make him feel guilty for being angry now. Why such a quick turn of tables? He was hating it, making him even more angry. The red light turned green and he resumed driving. Now that they were off the highway he better pay more attention to the road rather than let himself see the world in red. Unfaithful. It sounded like they were about to get married or something and that this kiss happened. He glanced at her again, a frown traced upon his face. "Don't talk like that." his tone was made of sharp cutting edges, as he wished that there could be a single red light that would last longer than any other so he could face her, watch the look on her face more intently. "If it was just an accident like you keep saying then there is nothing to talk about." he thought he had his self control in his pocket, that he would be able to hide the tonalities of his voice, the angry ones he shouldn't be having. He felt guilty for yelling at her after what they had gone through, but a part of him was wishing to simply evacuate all of it now, justifying his anger by this kiss rather than to think of it as a minor happening and move on. In his mind he thought, it sure must have been an enjoyable kiss since you both had the same lips in the end. Smeared in lipstick. He said nothing about it, but another thought had arisen. "Is that why Jacob is in the hospital right now? Did your 'mission' go downhill because of that 'accident'?" he was bitter in his words, and like karma coming back at him, all the lights were green.

He felt somehow hurt that she could believe that perhaps he was joking about being exclusives. But looking at it under a different angle, he could understand how she could be lead to think so. He didn't look or act like the most serious man every day, in fact it was rare for Ruby and Jacob to see him truly serious about something. He had a hard time keeping to his missions and engagements. A fact he should work on. Ruby was trying to push him away again and he didn't understand why. Did she not want to be with him or was it something else? Max wasn't the kind to suffer from paranoia, but with the exhaustion and the anger slowly filling him up against his will, he found himself suspecting things he wouldn't have otherwise. He finally looked at her, even if it was for a quick second, his eyes probably showed anger he wished he would be able to hide. "You sound awfully guilty for a mistake. And Jacob did too." His tone was cold and serious but didn't betray any other feeling. He wanted to believe she wasn't lying but the way she spoke, acted, it all felt like a lie to him. Anger was filling him up. Anger against himself for being unable to simply trust the two, anger against Ruby for talking about that kiss like it was no big deal, anger against that person who made all of this more complicated than it already was. He felt no anger against Jacob just yet. In his mind, things played that the man had no choice but to push Ruby away and he knew not if he did or didn't. Max felt like the merc could feel guilty for being a part of it or responding to it. For the moment his anger was mostly directed at Ruby, and while his eyes looked at the road, he nearly missed a red light and stopped abruptly in front of it, exhaling once but retaining his anger inside. Only his face started to show the weakness building up.

He was right, what Ruby Blackwood and Jacob did was simply the reality of things. The lipstick smeared on each other's lips was no makeup for some plan, nor did it seem like it was for cover. At least Ruby didn't make it seem like it was for come sort of cover. His face was, immobile, his eyes kept looking at the road and he had a hard time focusing on both the road and his thoughts. But the truth was that he didn't know what to think. What was that supposed to mean? The heat of the moment? Could you just, kiss a random person because of the 'heat of the moment' ? He truly wanted to trust Ruby on this one that, like she made it seem, there was nothing more to it. He thought about what Jacob was about to say at the hospital. He was right to believe he wanted to talk about that kiss. Did they both feel so guilty that they couldn't keep that as a secret? It would have been hard to do so and at some point it would have come out of one of them. Max was, in a way glad to see that they were both ready to tell him the truth despite the looming fear that he could get truly angry. In a way, he truly wanted to be angry, but right now he remained silent, turning in his head her words, trying to understand.

Ruby took off his coat and moved it to the back. Good thing he thought about putting the heater on or she would have been freezing. He drove out of the parking place, taking the highway to get to Ruby's place. It took him a few minutes to figure out the fastest way to get there, mentally tracing the map to head in the right direction. He was looking straight at the road when Ruby spoke, her tone serious, guilty. She sounded even concerned. Max believed he knew what the subject was going to be about, and perhaps the fact that he was driving right now was a good thing. Maybe he'll be forced to concentrate on the road and cars around him rather than the discussion they were about to have. He was dreading this talk, afraid to hear what Ruby Blackwood had to say. Cutting short to his train of thoughts he gave a quick glance at Ruby. She wasn't looking at him. Eyes back on the road he breathed in and out slowly, silently before answering. "What do you want to talk about?" why was he playing the card of the innocent and unknowing man? Maybe it was so she felt more confident in talking to him. Maybe if he showed that he noticed and might have an idea of what happened she would have feared his wrath or something along those lines. To be honest he didn't know if he would feel wrath or not.

When he headed out of the hospital he was stroke by the cold. He hadn't noticed before how cold it was outside. Ruby Blackwood still had his coat, but she could keep it for now, she needed it more than he. He reached the car, inviting Ruby to sit in the passenger seat while he put Lucius in the back. The pup didn't stay in the back for very long however, too exited to see Ruby back and maybe wondering where the bunnies went. "Do you want me to drive you back home? It's your call." he questioned the woman, adjusting his seat, the rear mirror and the side ones before removing the police lights from the top of the car and starting the engine, putting on the heater so his breath would stop making some white mist every time he breathed. He was tired, but he believed he could drive just fine as long as they didn't get caught in any traffic. And traffic at this hour, well it was very unlikely. His mind wasn't focused on anything precise, just trailing from a subject to another. At one point it was Jacob in the hospital all by himself, the next was his sister, the later his dog, what Ruby was thinking, where they were headed and the road to take, how tired he was, the one responsible for all this despicable mess and so on in a continuous wheel.

They either loved their joke so much they weren't ready to just drop it, or they truly loved to mess around with him. It was probably both now that he thought about it. He recalled they've said several times that he was fun to toy with and mess with. But then it might be there faces telling all of their thoughts to him, or making him believe it was so. He shrugged at their complaints. He wasn't going to change that dog's name any time soon, and if he had to be honest, these two were the inspiration for the name. Lucius, coming from Lucifer, coming from the fact that for a while these two made him live a living hell. To the cop, having a dog associated with the devil was like a slight revenge to his past where he believed he saw demons at each curve of the streets. It was like he was able to dominate and tame one of those beasts and make it his companion for life, one he would love and one that could protect him and work alongside with him instead of seeking for his bones and corpse. Jacob saying Max was more fitting of a name for a puppy made Max lift a brow in surprise. Did he think the same thing of him? See him more as an immature pup than a grown up dog or man? He commented not on the subject, but he chuckled at their words nonetheless. [break][break] Max looked amusedly at the heart monitor when Jacob pointed it out. It was true that he could look at it to make sure Jacob was okay, but how much could you trust a machine versus a real human being and the true lively pulse under your own fingers to measure? To Max it was more reliable to do it the way he was doing it, and it permitted him to be closer to Jacob. You don't touch dead people, but you do with the ones alive. Unless you fancy doing so, but it wasn't Max's case. And it wasn't the same type of touch you give to a warm body and a cold one. He removed his hand from Jacob's wrist with a chuckle, moving it to his shoulder to press it in a comforting way. He was going to find something to reply to Jacob about not using the heart monitor for the pulse, but a nurse came inside the room just as Ruby was about to open the door for some reason. Visit hours were done, and it was a shame, something that blew a slight bubble of anger in his chest. A bubble that popped a moment later when he looked at his watch. It was late, of course visit hours were over. He got off the bed after seeing that the nurse will probably be shooing him off. He could have replied to Ruby's comment about sitting on the floor with you are not the boss of me, but saying that now that the nurse was there would be useless. [break][break] He put his hands in his pockets, looking at Ruby as she said goodbye to Jacob, and for some reason he thought she was going to give him a hug. He was wrong however. He felt like something was missing because of Ruby's choice. He rubbed Jacob's arm gently with a smile, mixed with what appeared to be disappointment. Disappointment for not being able to watch over Jacob himself, for not being able to give him some source of entertainment while he was away, for leaving him in a place he knew the man hated. "We'll be back Jacob, don't worry." he said before heading to the door behind Ruby before turning around and pointing at the drawer with the coke hidden inside. He whispered, articulating with his lips "If you get too bored". That was the only thing he could do for the man, leave him some coke and the rabbit plush toy. He gave the man a last large smile before closing the door behind him. It almost felt rude somehow to close the door this way, like closing it on an unfinished conversation. But he had to go, and drive Ruby back to her house. Hopefully she'll be fine by herself there after all that happened. If she requested it, the cop would not go against letting her spend the night at his place. She was in a similar state than the night after the aquarium. He remembered sometimes when his sister got a nightmare and would come seek his presence rather than that of their parents. In this case, Ruby seemed like she just got over a nightmare, and only needed some comfort. She might have had enough of it however, and that was why Max wanted to leave the choice of what she wanted to do to her. [break][break] When he headed out he was stroke by the cold. He hadn't noticed before how cold it was outside. Ruby still had his coat, but she could keep it for now, she needed it more than he. He reached the car, inviting Ruby to sit in the passenger seat while he put Lucius in the back. Cats. The more you know
Taking PTSD for longer than 6 years didn't sound like a great way of living. He knew people who took PTSD could be prey to panic attacks. Come to think of it, he didn't witness any from Ruby yet. Of course she had been terrorized at the shark tank, and it probably didn't help her with her already stressed mind. Only now did Max understand the full weight of his actions then. How could she want to stick around him? How could she even accept any of his apology? Why was she giving him the impression that perhaps there could be more between them every time they spent time together. And here they were, the wars in his head, back for more to debate about. Of love and war, his mind was made. He hushed those wars quickly however, unwilling to debate on any of his personal problems today. Don't make this more complicated Madden.
Ruby then started to speak about an episode of her past. It sounded far away by the way she spoke about it, like a distant memory that still felt like a freshly engraved wound in her mind. Her state of being was so changing. At one point she seemed alright, like she was able to talk about it without too much trouble, but the next moment she was evasive, seemingly fearing something, wishing to escape the man's gaze. Was he being too insisting? On cases where he had to interrogate people, he could play both the good and bad cop, but he could also become extremely insisting, forcing people to speak until he was satisfied with their answers. Fortunately it wasn't always the case, he didn't always have to do so. Right now he was being the good cop, but he was afraid of pushing Ruby beyond the line, beyond the cliff of no return and he would have to watch her fall without being able to catch her. It would be a terrible thing if he had to watch her leave, get away from him because of this discussion. But if he had to see it happen to permit her to have a better life, to allow her to move on knowing she left her story with someone who will never talk about it to anyone, then he would accept to stay behind without a doubt.
Her words rang familiar in her mind. I wanted to die. He heard that before, and they were his own words. He realizes today that they are foolish words, words of a coward who is afraid of what life may give in the future. Too afraid to get up and try to move on because the world is so big and full of choices. But he made his, good and bad and moved on. Apparently Ruby did the same thing eventually, but she still drags a heavy boulder behind her, a weight of scars and memories that no one helped her wash off. It was probably eating at her, stinging her memory every now and then. He had no words for what she said, and fear grasped his mind as she put both of her hands on his chest to push him away from her. The fear faded away as she spoke again, only stating that the bathroom wasn't the best of places to talk about all of this. Max could only agree, and right now he was being the silent one, there to listen until he could get back to life, talk again and hopefully tell her what she wishes to hear, and hopefully make things better.
He followed her to the living room and sat down on the couch, thinking she'll join his there, but noticing she wanted to stay standing. Was this something that made her feel more confident in talking? Empowered by looking down at him instead of up like some little girl. As said before, Max was the ears, eyes and body in this situation, but not the mouth. He stated no complaint, no suggestions as to how to go about this. He let Ruby come out raw to him, without distracting her words or accidentally switching subjects. She spoke more, unraveling before his eyes stories of her past. Despite her will to seem so strong, Max could see beyond the acting, the wounded woman fighting every day to keep the little girl inside of her, to protect her and seal her away from the world's eyes. Her brother seemed like the good person in the story, while her father seemed to be one of the elements that forced her into being..this way. So afraid to show emotions. He saw her move her hands behind her back. At first he thought it was a way of shielding herself, before she spoke again and her action became more meaningful. He remembered the first time he saw that tattoo at the Masquerade. Then he didn't see that it was hiding a scar, only thinking it was the woman's way of embellishing her skin like many others before her. Later he had found his hands wandering on that back in a more personal way, the night after the shark incident. But yet again he didn't notice it was hiding a scar. She got shot in the back and survived. A dream-catcher to harness her nightmares, keep the memories of her dark past away from coming back. He had no idea, that touching her back could be bringing out memories every time his fingers accidentally trailed on that scar he never felt before. He felt ashamed and guilty in a way. But he didn't feel like he could have been able to ever know about Ruby's past earlier.
When she was done speaking, Max was still watching her, a protective gaze laid upon her, and an understanding one, more prominent. Again, he wanted to hold her close, but for a different reason. Even the strongest people on earth need comfort at some point in their lives, and people tend to forget that, even those strong people. He wanted to speak, to find the right words for her. He just wanted to tell her that he understood her pain, that he had felt the same before, but he couldn't bring himself to do so. He couldn't even bring himself to move. Though his eyes did not look away from Ruby for second, as if he was afraid that if he did she would disappear, fall like dust and get blown away by his sole movement. He could remain quiet, let her continue, but the fear that with no push she would stop and lock herself away was looming over his head. He overcame that fear, and remained quiet, his eyes speaking for him for once.

What a mess
[attr="class","petit"] [break] [attr="class","petitcontent"] [attr="class","petitcontentstyle"] [attr="class","petitfirstletter"]T Ruby had finally realized that she wasn't exactly presentable and thrown the shirt on top of her barely dressed body. If Jacob wasn't there, the hot mess would have possibly been worse and Max wouldn't have been so kind as to avoid embarrassing the poor man. That black lace lingerie was of nice taste, no denying it, but it was not a time to ogle such things when you were on the verge of passing out once more because of a nice hangover. Also his latest action, which was to bring the two closer to him once more for warmth and human contact, was met with no protestations, grumbles, or disproving glares. Actually they seemed to approve of the idea and added their little touch to the embrace, keeping the contact close. Ruby was already shutting her eyes again, mentioning something about pills for headaches. Yeah, Max had a headache, but it was much better when he was now laying again and that there wasn't too much sound around. He had no idea how to consider all of this, if he should ignore it ever happened, take it seriously, or just laugh about it. Given the different circumstances he could have fitting reactions about it. He faded back to sleep pretty fast, his warm breath evacuating from his nose as his head slowly fell to the side, feeling both Ruby and Jacob's own breath's on his own skin until his mind faded away with time. [break][break] This time he woke up again, feeling much better than the first time. His phone had been ringing, the PD leaving messages for him asking where he was at and if he would kindly call them back. Max usually called back to them sooner or later, but this time it would probably cause a slight rise of panic in the department as to where the hell he could be. Timmy and his gossiping will be on the case no doubt, finding all sorts of excuses to satisfy his need for making up people's lives. Max had no choice but to get up this time. And so he did, carefully letting the two sleep if they still were or try not to disturb the silence too much if they were awake. He'd get dressed, trying to recover his clothes, and for the longest of times he searched for his shirt until he realized Ruby had it. Well, that sure was bound to be an issue. He had nothing else with him, and he was planning to get to the PD right now. He even rubbed his face with soap in Ruby's sink to wash off any too strong smell of alcohol as well as wake up his tired face. He wondered if Ruby had any men's shirt or a sweater he could borrow to have something on him while he was at the PD. However he very much doubted that was the case and he didn't want to bother her to get his shirt back. Also it would be very...strange for him to start undressing her now in front of Jacob to get his shirt now. Max's quick thinking mind wasn't thinking much of the consequences however and he took Jacob's shirt this time, slipping it on before gathering his things. If Jacob was awake he would assure him out loud that he will bring him his shirt back asap before leaving. It was 6 o clock, time to get to the PD and ignore the crying hunger of his stomach. [break][break] When he got to the PD he did get scold, but he used as an excuse that he woke up this morning rather sick, and with his face people couldn't deny his lie so much. Sometimes hungover faces were the best for saving desperate situations. He could see him, Tim, Timmy, however you may call him. Giving him a curious look as he walked it. Max had a strong cup of coffee in his hand, ready to tackle the delay he took by sleeping in for the longest time today. He was bound to stay until late tonight, but hopefully with enough cups of coffee, he'll be able to handle the weight of the work without passing out again. And just like old sayings, never two without three, and around eleven o clock PM Max fell asleep on his paperwork until thirty minutes later when someone was kind enough to rub his back and wake him up. [attr="class","petit"] [break] [attr="class","petitcontent"] [attr="class","petitcontentstyle"] [attr="class","petitfirstletter"]I t's what friends are for. Ruby took away his words, letting him look at her with an agreeing nod. It didn't take him very long to get into a very calm state. Perhaps he was too calm, conditioning his energy in thoughts here and there, very fleeting ones, ones that didn't matter so much, or bits of information incomplete because they got lost in mist. His mind was like a butterfly, fluttering in a cold winter night, fog circling it until slowly, its wings froze, just like time. If he didn't have a watch then perhaps he would have lost track of that thing everyone calls time, that thing that mattered so much an hour earlier, but now no one worried about it any longer. And yes, those two were his friends, and every time a part of his mind was reminding him why they were this way in the first place, the rest of the cop's mind would get angry to fight off perhaps what was the reasonable part of his mind. But they hurt no one with their way of being. No one outside of themselves. In fact, Max liked to believe less people got hurt because of this relationship, simply because he was keeping Ruby and Jacob busy, that all three of them were keeping each other out of harm's way. Like today. Jacob was indeed at the hospital and almost died poisoned, but he was alive, because Ruby and he were there for him. He felt honored in some way to be able to have and keep such a strong relationship. It's not something many people can claim to have. You could say they found each other in a hopeless place. [break][break] After bringing a chair to Ruby, she quickly got up again to answer her ringing phone. He wondered who could possibly be calling her right now. A contact cleaning after the mess, from what he understood out of her few words before she left, a hand brushing along Max's arm. It was a reassuring gesture, also telling Max not to move perhaps, to stay there and take care of Jacob while she was gone. Ruby was still afraid that the man wasn't out of harm's hands, and it was understandable. And that little gesture, the invisible one, was what made Max understand why he couldn't be angry at them about that supposed kiss. He had no idea of what happened, and it shouldn't matter. What will happen will happen, he wasn't the one that was going to crush their lungs in hopes of an answer to a question that might not need one. He looked at Jacob, waiting for Ruby to come back before, like he planned, he would go take care of Lucius. [break][break] Jacob spoke. His voice sounded so tired yet full of life. The effects of escaping death probably. He was always there for humor, and succeeded in it so much better than Max. The cop smiled, shaking his head and crossing his arms, taking a deep breath with a kind look oriented to Jacob's direction. His eyes trailed along the tubes, stopping on the IV bag, then to the heart monitor. Everything seemed in order, nothing that was alarming. Except for the fact that Jacob was yet again in a hospital bed. Max would have preferred sending him ten times himself to the hospital than to get to experience his friend almost dying once again. "Yes we do save each other's lives a lot lately. But you know what? I prefer that than to have to mourn you or Ruby as many times as we saved each other." he cocked his head to the side, simply glad that what he was saying was a fact and not just a wish. That so far, he didn't have to mourn anyone close to him. In fact, the only person he ever had to mourn, was the Max that died in the New York streets about 15 years ago. Silence reigned for the few minutes Ruby was on the phone, however just before she came back, something grew in Jacob's eyes, something Max never noticed in him before. He started a sentence, but didn't finish it. He got cut off by Ruby coming back inside. Max's head went to her, but before she was back in her seat, his eyes looked at Jacob, his cold blue eyes filled with an understanding. A silent understanding of what Jacob might have been wanting to say. It seemed to be important, and with one look, it was like he was showing that he will remember that. The most insignificant of things, sometimes stick forever. Honesty does too. [break][break] He didn't want to be cruel to Jacob by bringing him coke, but he knew the whiny tone of the man betrayed that he understood his words. He brought it because he knew the man loved that drink, but he also knew it could be a bad thing for his health right now. And thus he'll have to drink it while the nurses weren't watching, and possibly tomorrow. Max had no idea when he'll be going home himself, and didn't think any of the medical staff would actually bring Jacob coke even if he begged for it. So he had to to it in advance, just in case he couldn't bring anything the next time he visited. He gave a chuckle to the man, but found no words to answer. "Yes, Max like you call him is also known as Lucius. He was in the car keeping your legs warm when you were...on your way here." Max explained Lucius' reaction to the situation, thinking it might bring some smiles to the two. At the same time he crouched to lean against the wall behind him. It felt nice to rest his head there. [break][break] But apparently, him sitting on the floor wasn't acceptable. His action was met immediately with the two's protesting against it. Ruby was already off her chair, and Max rolled his eyes, leaning even more into the wall, crossing his arms around his knees with a slight smirk. It was just the floor, and it was more comfortable to him that a simply hospital chair. Ruby should just join him down here and rest as well, he wouldn't mind serving as some pillow for an hour or two, until the hospital staff found them of course. He got up however, to kindly push Ruby back into the chair. She was the one who needed it the most anyway. Her kind gesture was noted however, just like all the other ones she had been giving ever since his arrival. Max considered Jacob's suggestion of sitting next to him. He didn't see much of an inconvenient to it, and who knew if they would let him get away with sitting on the floor like a 'dog'. He walked around the bed so he could sit next to Jacob, leaning his back against the bed's head, that way he would be able to see both of them. He let one of his hands find Jacob's once again, so he could feel the man's pulse under his fingers. It was reassuring to a level Max didn't expect, those small veins in Jacob's wrist, regularly pulsating against the cop's thin finger skin. He was to be strong, to be there for these two. But was it the contact, the pulse, the fact that he could feel the man's warmth, the warmth of the living next to him, was it all those elements that made Max's throat swell up as well as the growing pressure within? He gulped down slowly, breathing steadily to keep this ridiculous reaction in him. "When are you two going to let me sit on the floor? Am I not allowed?" he asked, bringing his mind to a concrete subject. [break] [attr="class","petitsub"] What a mess
[attr="class","petit"] [break] [attr="class","petitcontent"] [attr="class","petitcontentstyle"] [attr="class","petitfirstletter"]T He guessed he could be considered a jerk for moving so much, talking so much a morning where they all possibly had the worst hangover of their life. No actually that wasn't true for his case, but it wasn't the right time to think about younger party that took place, a rave of students in france with everyone old enough to vote, drink and party. Sounded like a horror movie scenario, would have been funny to have these two stirring up the party a little. Oh Max what are you thinking? Yeah hungover mind trails anywhere, who knew. Jacob's words were closer to a grunt to Max's mind, his own words probably came out the same way. He was not able to get up and get dressed, neither of them looked like they would be able to do so. There was light outside, so it was definitely late in the morning. He tried to gather his senses while he sat on the edge of the bed, trying to remember whatever happened for them to all be half naked. He felt reassured that they weren't completely naked, who knows what might have happened then. Their current state showed that whatever happened, it was probably harmless. Though he did remember an awfully close to his face Jacob. He frowned, looking at him with a questioning look, wondering if looking at his face would clear his mind up. Oh boy did Jacob look like a hot mess. You shouldn't stare Max. But staring perhaps resulted in what must have been the slowest ever "hit by a train" realization. He still had a confused frown on his face, like he was squinting to keep the sun out of his eyes on a nice beach. Laying on a nice beach right now would be nice right now, except falling asleep on the warm sand in the would end up with a burned skin. He brought a hand to his mouth, confusedly touching his lips before finally looking away from Jacob. What happened? Did they kiss? No that couldn't have happened, that was a mistake, an illusion Max should probably attempt to forget and leave behind everything else that might have happened last night. [break][break] Woke up on the wrong side of the bed? More like: Woke up in the wrong position with the wrong idea of what a pillow should be. Hands wandering in the wrong places, waking up with a barely clear image of the past night. Was it frightening? A little. But mostly, it was actually a little invigorating. He shouldn't feel good about this, and yet a part of him did. He gave up on slipping clothes onto Ruby. She was being so stubbornly limp, there was no way for him to be able to do anything about it in his state. He fell limp himself between the two, rubbing his face with his hands. Both of them wanted silence, and he could understand why. When silence fell again, even if it was for a second, it felt so nice to his head. He closed his eyes and expired all the air in his lungs, using a moment of peace to recover a little more of his liquid mind. Because that was a good depiction of how he felt right now. He scratched his light beard, feeling filthy. He wished he was in his own house, to be able to just let those two get up calmly while he took a shower. But he wasn't going to go use Ruby's shower just like that. He should try to get dressed, to go to the PD and work. It felt like an impossible feat. Like pushing a boulder up a mountain or something just as stupid. Fake being sick? Yeah that sounded like a great idea. He knew his excuses were getting old, that at some time people will get sick of it, that the PD will soon catch up on him and put a foot in the door to drag him in front of the law and their rules. You should be more responsible Max, you should work more, stop getting distracted. It's always what you think before you just continue to do as you please until somebody pulls you down back on earth's hard floor. [break][break] He felt cold now that they weren't in some sort of pile. Maybe he should have remained that way just a little longer, maybe he could have enjoyed the warmth of these two just a little more so he won't be craving it until it happens again, if it ever happened again. He enjoyed human contact way too much for his own good, a mistake, a trait he wished he could erase a little so he wasn't so dependent on it. To hell with conventions, rules and whatever stood in the way of making people feel good and safe. He gently grabbed Ruby around her waist, dragging her closer to him as he did the same with Jacob, slipping a hand under the man's back to rest his head on his chest. If they ever asked, he could use the excuse that he was cold and that the blanket wasn't accessible. It was too nice to feel burning skin on his own to simply pass on a friendly gesture or however you might want to call it. He noted in his head that later he should try to apologies for being so noisy and grumpy, it was an after effect of waking up in such a strange way. Being sure the two were with him and nowhere else was reassuring and made him feel like perhaps he did something right. [break][break] [newclass=".petitheader"]background-image:url('http://i67.tinypic.com/ndwu2a.jpg');width:520px;height:250px;background-position:right;[/newclass] [newclass=".petitfirstletter"]float:left;background-color:transparent;border:1px solid #324956; padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:15px;padding-right:15px;text-align:center;color:#324956;width:5px;font-family:'source sans pro';font-size:13px;margin-right:4px;[/newclass] [newclass=".petit"]width:420px;background-position:center;padding:50px;background-color:#f7f7f7;[/newclass] [newclass=".petittitle"]font-family:'quicksand';color:#fff;letter-spacing:2px;font-size:30px;text-align:center;text-transform:uppercase;padding-top:70px;[/newclass] [newclass=".petitsub"]font-family:'source sans pro';color:#fff;font-style:normal;font-size:12px;text-align:center;width:210px;padding:5px;border:1px solid #fff;text-transform:uppercase;letter-spacing:2px;[/newclass] [newclass=".petitcontent"]width:360px;background-color:#fff;float:center;text-align:justify;margin-top:-120px;padding:30px;border-bottom:1px solid #324956;[/newclass] [newclass=".petitcontentstyle"]font-family:'roboto';font-size:11px;color:#222;height:300px;overflow:auto;padding:3px;[/newclass] [newclass=".petitcontentstyle::-webkit-scrollbar"]width:1px;[/newclass][newclass=".petitcontentstyle::-webkit-scrollbar-track"]background-color:#eee;[/newclass][newclass=".petitcontentstyle::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb"]background-color:#324956;[/newclass] [newclass=".petitnotes"]font-family:'quicksand';letter-spacing:1px;color:#324956;font-size:11px;text-transform:uppercase;[/newclass]

[attr="class","petit"] [break] [attr="class","petitcontent"] [attr="class","petitcontentstyle"] [attr="class","petitfirstletter"]M ax didn't want to feel good about it, but seeing Ruby giving in to a few tears felt somewhat reassuring. That she was able to release some of her stress in that way, perhaps something she hasn't done in a long time. Yeah Max definitely felt bad about that thought. What was thought was thought, and no one will hear about it. She wrapped her arms around him to hug his frame, and he welcomed it warmly. His mind was being apologetic for something Ruby didn't even know about. Silently apologizing for making her go through this, for witnessing her weaker moments, for having to support her. He wouldn't want to act differently however, he was just wishing his help wouldn't ever have been necessary. After breaking the hug and waiting a little while until the nurse came to give them the good news, Max was yet again surprised Ruby was relying so much on his presence. He felt her touch on his arm, understanding she probably wanted to keep him close, to avoid losing him as well. She seemed so emotionally wrecked, it wasn't an easy sight to witness. Max wished he could go back in time and do everything in his power to avoid tonight's accident, and avoid having to see Ruby that way. It wouldn't be the first time. After the 'dinner' with Shaun, she had been an emotional wreck as well. But this time it was different, the feelings involved were far from being the same. [break][break] Ruby walked into the room, giving Jacob what he seemed to need to feel better. The man was awake, and despite the sight of all the tubes and needles stuck into him, he seemed to be doing fairly well for someone who was on the verge of dying about an hour ago. The reason why Max kept his distance was purely to make sure those two had enough space to talk and let some emotions out. Ruby was slowly getting her control back, and that made the cop intensely impressed and respectful. She was being strong for Jacob, a noble way of dealing with it all. It was a quality Max appreciated a lot in Ruby, her ability to control her emotions so well when it mattered. He remembered how Jacob hated hospitals, and how he got bored easily. Last time he wasn't completely alone, Max was there to talk, but this time no one was bound to stay at his side. If Ruby wasn't able to stay at his side, Max would attempt to get a few days off from work to take care of the man, keep him company as much as he could. Hopefully he wouldn't have to stay in the hospital for too long. [break][break] After Jacob addressed him, Max smiled, without even having to force himself too much. Ruby and he were done with their reminiscing, Max didn't mind getting closer now. He walked to the same side of the bed Ruby was knelt next to it, to be at Jacob's level. He took the man's hand carefully avoiding any of the IV tubes and pressing it cautiously. He had in memory the lipstick, smeared on both the man and the woman's lips. But for as much as Max knew, there was no use, no reason to get angry at anyone now. He trusted in them to be honest, a blind trust probably, but right now his mind couldn't go to any levels of anger. "Hey, nice to see you." Max wanted to come up with something witty to say, to lighten up the mood as well, but everything he came up with was just on the lines of 'would have been a shame to lose the white rabbit' or other things that only reminded how Jacob just escaped death. He eventually let go of the man's hand, his thumb caressing the inside of his palm affectionately. Max then looked around the room. There was only one chair, which he brought to Ruby before he remained standing, watching Jacob on his bed, feeling like this was almost like a nightmare turned into a simple dream. [break][break] The cop was emotionally exhausted, and also tired from his long day. And the day got even longer. Lucius was still in the car, and soon he'll go back to check on him. He felt like if he went back to the car now he'll just lay inside on the back seats and fall asleep there with Lucius. Though was it all the wave of emotions or the fatherly affection he grew for the pup that made him eager to check back on him very badly now that he knew Jacob was fine? He looked at his watch. It was late, very late. He sighed, resigned that he needed to check on the pup. "I have Lucius in the car. I'll go check on him and I'll be back in ten minutes." on those words he walked out, forgetting Ruby still had his coat. [break][break] How how Lucius's range of emotions went on a roller coaster when he saw Max come back but leave a few minutes later after taking the pup on a walk again around the parking bushes. Max felt bad for his little companion, but if he could understand human language, he would agree with his master's decision of leaving him in the car. On his way back, Max bought a cup of coffee, and one of tea. He also bought a can of coke. He returned to the room, avoiding the staff, knowing how iffy they were about food and drinks in patients room. "Hey, Lucius says hi." he said, using his hip to close to door. He gave the cup of tea to Ruby, thinking she needed something to relax more than something to keep her awake. He showed Jacob the can of coke. "So I brought this, but for obvious reasons I think you should keep it for later." he put it in one of the drawers of the room's nightstands. He set the cup of coffee for himself on the floor and between his back and his belt was stuck Lucius' stuffed bunny. It wasn't too dirty or stinky since Max put it in the washer the day before, but it still smelled like dog. He set it on the nightstand before sitting on the floor. Hospital floors, the cleanest you'll ever get. He sighed and leaned against the wall, giving a slight smile at Jacob then at Ruby. "Don't frighten us like this ever again Jacob, it's exhausting." he chuckled. He wanted to suggest Ruby to get some sleep, maybe he could even drive her back home if she wanted, baby sit Lucius while he drove back here to keep an eye on Jacob. He'll wait a little for that, Ruby may look tired, but she surely wouldn't want to leave Jacob just yet, and neither did Max.
