----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood --- Max woke in a good mood, it was like the nightmare was finally over. It’s true that the cop was still badly hurt, and it would take a good while for him to get back on his feet, but his life wasn’t in danger anymore, he was speaking and even calling Ruby sweet names. Jacob smiled, slumping against his chair as the last of his worries were drained away, leaving behind only exhaustion and relief. Jack White was still out there, of course, Jacob would love to deal with him personally, this wouldn’t’ be just forgiven and forgotten, but that was small problem that he would tackle later, when Max recovered more.
Ruby got up to fetch them food, her voice still low, as if afraid to disturb the hospital’s ambience. He turned around and watched her go, and once he turned back to Max, he saw the cop offering his hand to him, and he was quickly to grab it with both hands, squeezing it in reassurance, his thumb caressing him softly. The hand felt so fragile, Max looked so fragile, and it was probably the truth with all those wounds. Jacob’s touch was careful but firm, if he could, he’d like to give him a hug instead, fill the life and warmth from the cop enveloping him, but that would have to wait a bit more. It was expected that Max wouldn’t be feeling too well, he was probably drowning in painkillers, and once those were gone, it wouldn’t be fun for him. “I think that’s expected, considering… But I’m glad you’re awake” he appreciated how Max was trying to keep the mood light, his responses half jokes.
Ruby came back soon, carrying coffee and two croissants, but most surprising of all, was the vase of flowers she brought along. He accepted the coffee and pastry with a soft thank you and a small smile, before taking a sip of his beverage. The flowers were curious, all white with just one red exception, a symbol of Ruby’s care, he shot Ruby a fond smile, at least those would bring a bit more cheer to the horribly bland hospital room.
But then Max had to start asking the hard questions, a lot happened while they were saving the cop, and although Jacob didn’t regret a single kill, he was sure Max would be less than thrilled to hear how many Ruby and he had slaughtered on his behalf. Jacob took a bite of his croissant and used that as an excuse to avoid answering right away, he quite liked Ruby’s answer, avoidance was the best at this moment, it’d be bad for Max to get worked up for something as minor as some dead crooks. He shared a worried look with her, before swallowing and finally speaking. “We barged in, got you out, got stupid worried and brought you here.” He explained simply, he wasn’t lying, just leaving the gruesome details out.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood --- It didn’t take long at all for Max to close his eyes and fall asleep again, Jacob didn’t expect the cop to remain awake for long anyway, he barely had any energy to open his eyes, it was just a matter of time before Max couldn’t take it anymore and fell unconscious, at least he got the chance to see Jacob and Ruby, reassure the two criminals that he was going to be fine. The heart monitor kept on beeping, showing Max’s steady heartbeat, the sound was soothing for Jacob, proof that Max was alive and would get better eventually.
Ruby accepted his suggestion, her hand going to Jacob’s shoulder in a reassuring pat, and he couldn’t help but place his hand above hers, squeezing it and shooting the woman a small, tired smile. She exited the room soon after, Jacob nodding at her words, a silent promise that he would take good care of Max, not only in the brief moment she was away, but he wanted to make sure Max was always okay, and although that might sound like a stupid promise to make, since no one could live without risks, he could at least try his best.
It wasn’t too long until Ruby came back, carrying not only a folding chair for herself, but also a few pillows. He accepted the one she offered him with a grateful smile, and put it behind him to rest his back. Those chairs were not the most comfortable ones, so he appreciated the pillow, but it wasn’t the worse sleeping situation he had ever been on. He wasn’t even physically tired, but he felt emotionally drained, what happened to Max weighting down on his shoulders and now that he confirmed that the cop was going to be fine, it was like the weight was lifted and he was left drained of all his energy.
He still didn’t want to sleep, he wanted to keep his eyes on Max in case of any change, he caught Ruby’s eyes a few times, and eventually he noticed she had fallen asleep. He couldn’t fault her for that, it was good she felt peaceful enough to finally relax, and Jacob would keep an eye for both of them. The silence that filled the room was peaceful, the distant sound of footsteps and the hospital staff didn’t bother him, it filled the ambient with life.
There was a pained snarl that made Jacob look up and immediately look at Max in worry, but the cop was fine, he had just woken up in pain, which was understandable. He felt exhausted, last time he had looked at the window, the sun was coming up in the horizon, he had stayed mostly awake during the night, sometimes he would nod off, but never for more than a few minutes before waking up scared, his mind conjuring dreams that made him think he somehow had lost Max again. Right now was probably late morning, and he suspected he had finally managed to stay asleep for more than two hours. His eyes searched for Ruby, seeing her awake beside him, she looked like she slept better than him. “morning…” he mumbled to her tiredly but with a small smile, before running his hands on his face to wake himself up better.
Max was more coherent now, asking for French things, looking the most alive since this whole nightmare had started. Ruby seemed ready to attend the cop’s demands, and since she was offering, he might as well take advantage of it. “Coffee, please…. Black with sugar, I really need it.” Ordinarily he’d ask for a coke, but right now he just needed to properly wake up. He stretched his arms, hearing his bones creak. His neck hurt a lot from the terrible position he was in, and Jacob felt happy. “How are you feeling?” He asked Max, a gentle look in his eyes.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
Imagine Jacob’s happiness to see Max responsive and awake. The cop had gone through so much, and he still found strength to wake up and squeeze Ruby’s hand. Jacob wanted to take Max away with him and keep him from danger forever. It was a silly thought, but after what they had gone through, he felt justified on his feelings. But for now, it was enough to know Max was fine and out of danger, even if Jacob didn’t trust the hospital staff enough to leave his friend on their care unsupervised.
It was with a smile on his face that he saw Max mouth the word hey in response to him, he could understand the lack of strength to do much else, and only that word was enough for now. Ruby was right though, Max should get his rest instead of forcing himself to reassure a silly rabbit who couldn’t control his worry. “Just rest, we’ll be here when you wake up, I promise.” He said softly shortly after Ruby, and he fully intended to keep that promise. Jacob reached his fingers touch lightly on Max’s face, on one of the few spots where there were no bruises, a light caress, as if he couldn’t help himself but touch Max, to make sure he was really there, perhaps.
He sat down again on the chair, Max would probably go back to sleep, and he intended to let the cop rest until he got better. He looked around the room one more time, before turning to Ruby. “I’m sure you can find a chair for yourself in one of the other rooms, if you want.” He told her in a low voice, thinking that she, much like himself, would want stay the rest of the night on Max’s side. He’d stay silent until the next morning if no one talked to him, silently keeping vigil over Max, doing his best to stay awake until the cop woke up again.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
It seemed all Ruby needed in order to gather the courage to touch Max, was a little encouragement, and then she was caressing and running her fingers through the cop’s hair, in a similar manner to what Jacob had done a few moments earlier. Now that they had the chance to see the cop, it would be hard for the nurses or doctors convince Jacob and Ruby to leave Max’s side. The mercenary didn’t want to pry his eyes away from Max, it would feel like the kidnapping all over again, as irrational as that thought was, Jacob needed to see Max not only was fine, but that he would remain so. The scare had been too big for him to just leave his friend trapped in a hospital bed with a bunch of strangers and no protection.
Rest, of course Max needed all of he could get, Jacob realized that. But he just wanted to see the cop awake, looking at them, giving them one more sign that he would be fine. They already saw Max was alive, he was breathing and his heart was beating steadily, so maybe asking for him to wake up so soon was too much, but Jacob couldn’t help but have some intrusive thoughts hammering in his head. What if he never woke up? What if there was some permanent injury the doctors couldn’t identify yet? What if he wasn’t as fine as everyone thought and only got worse? So many things could go wrong, he just wanted to be sure.
Jacob’s eyes were kept mostly on Max, but every now and then he would throw Ruby a glance, making sure she was staying strong. He didn’t think less of her for the breakdown on the waiting room, Jacob himself was on the verge of one, the only thing that stopped him was the reassuring presence of Ruby at his side, but he cared about her, he wanted her to fine as much as Max. Because of his divided attention, at first he didn’t notice any movement from Max, the only thing that gave away that things had changed was the way Ruby looked up with a smile, whispering to Max fondly. “Is he…?” he asked softly, turning to look at the cop’s face, and to his surprise, there was a pair of blue eyes looking back at them, barely open, but there nonetheless.
An excited smile formed in Jacob’s lips, and he hovered above Max, a hopeful glint in his eyes. It was doubtful Max would be able to say anything, but even the slight sign of life was enough to lift Jacob’s mood. It should have been so hard to keep himself awake like that after everything Max had gone through, at that moment, Jacob really admired Max’s spirit to always keep fighting. “Hey Max.” He whispered in greeting, not expecting an answer. “We got you.” It was a reassurances to both Max and himself. They had done it, they had saved their cop, and Max was now here, safe.Everything was going to be fine now…… right?

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
To anyone seeing Jacob and Ruby walking the hospital’s corridors, hands linked, matching sorrowful expressions, it would be easy to mistake them as a couple. Jacob barely noticed id there were any glances thrown at them, he kept his hand firmly holding Ruby’s, not caring about what anyone would think. They went all the way to Max’s room with their hands liked, silently offering support to each other.
He opened the door silently, the only noise coming from the room was the beeping from the heart monitor, usually, when it was Jacob strapped to it, the noise was annoying, but hearing it from Max only served to reassure him, it showed the cop was alive, his heart strong and hanging on bravely. He approached the bedside, eyeing Max intently, every scratch and every mark those bastards had given to his cop, Jacob wished he could give them double, but it was too late for that, most were already dead, he’d have to content himself to just torturing Jack White once he got his hands on the man.
Max looked so peaceful, like he was just asleep, if only there weren’t so many bandages. Jacob reached his hand at the same time as Ruby touched Max’s arm, still holding each other’s hand. He run his fingers lightly through Max’s hair in a gentle caress, avoiding touching any wounds on his face. Max was breathing, his heart was beating, it was enough to calm Jacob down for now, even if all the tubes and wires coming out of the cop were a bit disturbing.
He watched Ruby hesitate to touch the man, throwing Jacob a look he couldn’t name. He made a gesture with his head towards Max, encouraging her to touch, feel how much their cop was still alive, before looking around the room as if looking for something, he soon spotted the only chair available, hospitals were so cheap, couldn’t they give the rooms more than one seat? He grabbed the chair and placed it beside Max’s bed, before seating and staring at Max, attentive to any change the cop may have. That was ow his place, and he’d listen to no one who would want him to move until he could speak with Max “C’mon Max, time to wake up” he whispered very softly, more to himself than anything, his hand seeking where Ruby had hers on top of the cop’s.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
He wasn’t sure how much time had passed since Ruby and he had arrived with Max. On one hand, it felt like no time at all, the events of the night passing in a blur of worry and blood. But at the same time it felt like they were waiting for an eternity for one of the nurses to come to them and tell how Max was doing. If this was how Max and Ruby had felt when Jacob was poisoned, then he should apologize for it sometime, to make them suffer so much because of his own mistakes.
Ruby and Jacob stayed huddled together for some time, clinging to each other, trying to hug their worry away, or perhaps share what they were going through in an attempt to lessen the feeling of uselessness. Eventually though, one of the nurses approached where they were seated, Jacob didn’t much like the way she eyed them both, but as long as she came bearing news, he would endure any odd looks the staff may or may not throw at him. She did come to inform them of Max’s conditions, stable was the word she used, and he felt like crying in relief. He chose to cross his arms instead, both to hide his shaking hands, and to stop himself from attacking the nurse when she told them only family could stay.
It would be very cruel of the hospital to stop them from seeing their friend just because they lacked any blood ties, Jacob would have stormed inside one way or another, he still had his knife, and he had ever felt any fear in using it. “Yes, we’re family, please... can we see Max?” His voice was pleadingly, a worried frown on his face as he squeezed Ruby’s hand, his thumb caressing her palm distractedly. The nurse squinted her eyes at them, as if looking for something in their expressions, before she gave them a kind smile and nodded, gesturing for them to follow her.
Jacob never let go of Ruby’s hand as he started to eagerly follow the nurse’s lead. Tugging the woman gently towards him. He still had the urge to embrace her, whisper that everything was going to be fine now that he knew it was true, but it wouldn’t be very appropriate right now. Soon they reached a door, and the nurse gave them some privacy after reminding them Max needed his rest. Jacob shot a look at Ruby, before grabbing the handle and softly opening the door.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
Ruby was close to a breakdown, from the way she was curled up in a corner, to the tears rolling down her face, it was clear she was not taking well what happened to Max. Jacob never expected her to, he’d think it strange if she was calmer, Max meant as much to her as he meant to Jacob, or who knows, maybe the comparison was unfair, and the cop meant more to her than he could imagine. Jacob felt that he should be the one who had to stay strong for her, be the supportive friend, keep his wits with him and don’t let his worry and fear to cloud his judgement. Think about doing and actually doing it, however, were two very different things. He was stretched thin, barely keeping himself from panicking and storming inside that hospital to look for Max, as much as he should be the strong one, he didn’t want to, couldn’t bring himself to. He wanted to collapse and scream, grab his gun and start shooting anyone who stood on his way to see Max.
The hug he offered Ruby helped him a little, her presence grounding him, so warm and inviting. The embrace was meant to support her, but Jacob was weak, and he needed as much reassurance as Ruby, he wanted someone to say everything was going to be fine, but at the same time he didn’t want some meaningless empty lies. Ruby was crying, and for a brief moment he wished he was capable of doing the same, let go of his control and cry to his heart’s content. But he feared if he let himself go, he’d be hard pressed in regaining his control.
He was a bit confused because of Ruby’s words. Why shouldn’t she be crying? It was only natural, with their friend so close to death as he was, it was like Ruby thought herself weak for having feelings, and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. She was strong, stubborn, prideful, he had seen hurting and bleeding, he had seen her with her life being threatened, he had seen her angry and vengeful, he’d never think less of her just because she was crying for once. “It’s fine to cry” He informed her softly, squeezing her reassuringly “You don’t have to stay strong and unaffected all the time, Ruby… Feelings are a weakness we can’t help but have… Otherwise we’d be alone” Right here, right now, he wished she wouldn’t feel the need to hide how bad she felt, he wanted her to trust him and let that caring side of her to show.
When Jacob was the one fighting for his life, he didn’t know how Ruby and Max reacted while waiting, he hadn’t bothered to ask, thinking it an unimportant detail. But now he realized it must have been terribly nerve wrecking, and now she was suffering again, now for her other friend. He felt Ruby’s arms warp around his torso, his arms squeezing the woman more firmly, burying his nose in her hair, leaning against her in a comforting action for his sake as much as hers, clinging to the woman in an eerily similar manner to what he had done with Max. When was the doctors going to come and tell them something...? Anything…

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
Caring was not an advantage, Jacob knew that, had known for a long time, it gave opportunities to his enemies, a perfect place to strike in which would cause a lot of pain, and that was exactly what had happened to him and Ruby. Max got hurt and now they suffered. He had known there was very strong possibility of that happening, in this life this was a common occurrence. The thing was, even after all this, Jacob did not regret letting Max get close to him. It had been a long time since he had someone to call a friend, someone he could trust with his life and enjoyed to spend time with, someone who knew exactly who he was and still stuck around. He would go as far as say he had never felt so happy to be around someone like the time he spent with Max and Ruby. The thought of losing one of them was almost unbearable, and now he was faced with that possibility.
Often, Jacob compared what he had with Max and Ruby with the relationship he had with his crew, since it was the only frame of reference of people who accepted him for who he was. But what he felt for them was so different, it run deeper, those two meant so much to him, it was scary. He never felt this possessive over anyone, protective, yes, but the way he acted with Max was more than that, he didn’t want anyone else touching the cop, not even Ruby, and he knew if Ruby was the one dying instead, he’d be acting the same way with her, protecting her even from Max’s touch, as irrational as it was.
There was the undeniable attraction he felt for Ruby as well, he didn’t like to dwell on it, avoided thinking about that kiss that started all this mess. But if he was being honest with himself, he’d go as far as say he had a… crush on her (and gosh, he felt stupid even thinking the word). He had always thought himself incapable of attraction, but Ruby proved him wrong. In the end, it didn’t even matter, Max and Ruby had each other, and Jacob would be happy if they were happy, he didn’t need to be in the middle of their love, he was satisfied with being their friend.
It didn’t take him too long to find Ruby, she was curled up on a corner, looking like she was trying to hide tears. A lump formed at the back of his throat at the sight, a worried look crossing his face. As expected, Ruby was not okay, he was a bit surprised she didn’t give him the ‘I’m fine’ lie. Jacob let out a sigh, sitting beside her, so close their arms were touching and leaned against her. “Same” he answered, it would be pointless to lie, especially after she didn’t., they were worried, sad, scared, at that moment they had only each other, so it felt natural for him to wrap his arm around Ruby, bringing her closer in what he hoped was a comforting embrace.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
How long until any news would come? Was this some kind of punishment? This waiting that had no end, the doubt if their friend would survive, not being able to do anything to make things better, trust some strangers that they would do their jobs properly. The worst thing was, by his nature, Jacob didn’t trust stranger to do their jobs properly. He felt exhausted, ready to collapse, but he knew that if he tried to rest right now, he wouldn’t be able to, his mind kept conjuring hundreds of outcomes to this night, from happy and hopeful ones, to terrible ones that made him want to start screaming.
Ruby took his offer to use the changing room first, and Jacob stayed just outside the door, looking at all the people waiting to see a doctor. People could be so overdramatic, it wasn’t like any of them were dying, he couldn’t see a single person who was bleeding, and yet, they all wasted time in this place, wasted the doctor’s precious time.
He waited for quite a few minutes for Ruby, so much he started to worry that something had happened. As unlikely as that would be, he was just too worked up because of Max, his worry bleeding over the woman as well, he didn’t know if he would be able to deal if something happened to Ruby as well. Jacob was about to knock on the door and call for her, but as soon as he lifted his hand, the door opened and Ruby came out, looking a little more clean, her head low. He wanted to ask if she was okay, but that was a stupid question, okay was the last thing either of them were at that moment, so he silently entered the changing room after shooting Ruby a worried look.
He looked at himself on the mirror, having his first glimpse on how terrible he looked. It felt like he hadn’t slept in a week, the blood had congealed and was encrusted on his skin. He felt dirty and gross, his clothes a disgusting rust color. He quickly took it off, going to the sink to try to scrub at least some of the blood from his face and arms. Jacob felt only marginally better after putting on the clean clothes, but at least now people would stop sending him scared looks, and more importantly, he wouldn’t worry Max too much when the cop sees him. He exited the bathroom, his eyes immediately seeking Ruby out. “You okay?” He asked her softly, even if it was a stupid question. All this time, not once he had checked how she was holding up.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
Wait, that was all they could do; Wait for the doctors do their job, wait to see if max would make it, wait until this nightmare was over. But the more time passed, more doubts Jacob felt. What if he didn’t make it? What if this was the end for Max? No, that wasn’t… that couldn’t happen… Max was going to be fine… Right? He felt all this was his fault somehow, but he also couldn’t wait until he got his hands on Jack White, to feel that disgusting excuse of man at his mercy, to drive his knife deep into him, watch as life left his eyes. He wanted to kill Jack White and everyone who had ever been associated with that man.
A nurse approached him and Ruby, offering clean clothes and a space in the bathroom for them to change. Jacob stared stupidly at the white cloth, he had forgotten he was looking like some sort of gore fest. But who would care about blood on their clothes in a situation like this? Ruby’s words made sense, however, Max would hate to see them like this, a reminder of what they were capable of. Jacob nodded at the woman “Right… let’s.” he had been silent since the car ride, when he spoke his voice was low, subdued and a bit shaky. He was glad that at least Ruby didn’t seem to be angry at him anymore. He walked towards where the nurse had indicated, and motioned for Ruby to go first.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood ---
As soon as Jacob entered the emergency room’s hallways, there was a flurry of movement from the nurses. A stretcher was brought to them, and Jacob was instructed to place the bleeding cop on it. The problem was, he didn’t want to. He knew he had to, he knew Max needed medical care as soon as possible, he knew he was being stupid and irrational, and yet, it was needed three different nurses and a doctor to convince Jacob let go of Max. The only consolation was that Max seemed to want to be separated from Jacob as much as the mercenary, and one of the nurses had to pry the cop’s hand open so he would let go of Jacob’s shirt.
He watched his friend be pushed away in a hurry, he even tried to follow, but for some stupid reason he wasn’t allowed to. Someone asked him if he was fine, probably because of all the blood covering his clothes, but the question was ignored as Jacob paced back forth, unsure what else he could do. The feeling of uselessness intensifying the longer he had to wait to see Max.

You take what's mine And i put laugh in slaughter Max was going to be fine, there was no need to worry, he was going to be fine, he had to be fine, there was no other option, Jacob couldn’t bring himself to accept any other option, he didn’t know what he would do if Max didn’t make it, but he wasn’t going to dwell on that thought, because Max dying was not. an. option. How could Jacob let this happen? Everything was fine with them, everything was happy, and Jacob had to go and screw up a mission, Jack White had to go and attack his cop since he could hit Jacob personally. It was Jacob’s fault, he put his friend’s life at risk, he led the enemy to Max’s door, he put both Max and Ruby on danger’s path and Max was the one who paid the price. If he felt guilt for kissing Ruby that day of the charity ball, it didn’t compare to what Jacob was feeling right now, why did everything he cared about needed to have a bloody ending?
No, not this time, he and Ruby could take Max to the hospital, he was going to be fine! But until they got there, all Jacob could do was protect Max from any further harm, keep the cop on his sight, not let go of him, keep him safe. He felt horrible for snapping at Ruby, and he couldn’t really blame her for snapping right back. Fine, who knew one simple word could carry such anger and bitterness, Jacob flinched, and held Max closer to himself, he wanted to apologize once again, but her dismissal was telling how much she wouldn’t appreciate it. She was right, he was weak indeed, Max and Ruby were his weaknesses, he was aware of that, and he feared what would happen if he lost any of them. What was done to Max was proof enough of how dangerous it was to form attachments in this life. He wondered if it wouldn’t have been easier for everyone if Max had died when he and Ruby left him for dead at the harbor, but that selfish thought just made him feel even guiltier.
It was clear he had angered Ruby with his actions, he couldn’t blame her, he was being unreasonable, keeping Max all to himself, being ridiculously possessive. He avoided eye contacted with her and stayed silent until he entered the car, but secretly, he was glad she did not insist in carrying Max, he’d kept being unreasonable, he could admit that to himself. Ruby’s plea reached his ears, and made him realize he was not the only one terrified for the cop’s life, it should’ve been obvious, but Jacob was so focused on the cop and his own feelings of guilt and inadequacy, that he hadn’t stopped to think of how much this was affecting Ruby. “I won’t” he murmured in response, putting all the conviction he could muster in those two words, he wasn’t sure how convincing he was, though.
It appeared Ruby wouldn’t meet his eyes for the time being either, probably too angry and scared to properly face him right now. Jacob suspect the only reason Ruby hadn’t chewed him out was because they had more pressing matters. He lowered his head, looking at Max’s face again, noticing for the first time the man had closed his eyes. He felt dread fill him, his shaking fingers looking for Max’s pulse once again, and he was relieved to feel the faintly beating heart was still stubbornly holding on.
The hospital was approaching fast, much to the mercenary’s relief. Ruby screeched the car to a halt, and Jacob carefully climbed out, carrying Max on his arms, covered in blood. He went with a quick pace towards the emergency room’s entrance. The sight of so much blood would at least spring all hospital staff into action, though Jacob was still not happy to have to let go from the cop. Rationally, he knew it was necessary, but he wasn’t being rational right now, he was scared.

You take what's mine And i put laugh in slaughter Useless, that was the word Jacob would use to describe himself at that moment. He had arrived almost too late, Max was alive, but so wounded Jacob was afraid to move him too much in fear of causing more pain. Ruby and he had killed a dozen or more people, hacked and chopped, painted the wall red with blood and guts, let anger and thirst for vengeance cloud their actions and came down on Jack White’s men like messengers of death, killing everything on their path. But all that was for nothing if Max died on his arms, the cop was still bleeding and Jacob who never felt anything at the sight of blood was feeling weak minded and vaguely panicked with all the red liquid still pouring out of his friend, sluggish, dripping down slowly, staining Jacob’s arms further, the metallic smell was overwhelming, and made him want to leave..
Max spoke, calling for Ruby. It made sense would call for her first, she probably was the one Max would like to have on his side, the one he loved. But Jacob was feeling selfish, he wanted to keep Max with him, Ruby wouldn’t be able to carry him well anyway, or so he justified to himself. Max was brought down, and seemingly any movement cause the man more pain, there was nothing Jacob could do but try to be as gently as possible, and allow Max to curl up against him. Ruby said some reassuring words to Max, gently running her fingers through his hair, Jacob thought it was quite useless, the cop didn’t seem to be hearing much, he almost dragged Max away from her touch, fearing she would hurt him more, but stopped himself, it was an irrational fear, Ruby wasn’t stupid, and she cared about the cop as much as him.
He watched Ruby walk away to gather their weapons, until he felt Max shift to look up at him. He turned towards the cop, his eyes soft and a worried expression never leaving his face. “You’ll be fine, don’t worry.” He said softly, not sure if he was trying to reassure Max or himself, his words felt empty and like they were falling into deaf ears, he didn’t know if he was telling the truth or even if Max was coherent enough to understand him, empty reassurances were all Ruby and he could offer.
Ruby came back, carrying everything they needed to take with them, and made to help him carry Max. Jacob wasn’t sure what came over him, but he moved out of her way, taking Max away from her reach, clinging to the cop and shooting the woman a glare. “It’s fine, I can carry him.” His voice was more aggressive than necessary, and he immediately felt bad for snapping at her. “Sorry I didn’t mean to… It’s just… it’s fine, I can do it.” He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself and stop attacking Ruby for no reason, she probably was feeling terrible as well.Ruby’s next question made Jacob look at down at Max again, he was bleeding too much, his injuries too severe for them to take care of it without help, he needed a professional, not some bandages and a few stiches. He turned his worried frown back at Ruby “He needs a hospital, we can’t do anything.” He hated saying that, the feeling of uselessness intensifying. He suspect Ruby already knew that, but wanted hear confirmation from him. Briefly the thought of what the medical staff would think of them passed through his mind. Ruby and him covered in blood and Max with so many wounds you could barely see his skin under the blood. In the end, it didn’t matter, Jacob would gladly deal with doctors, nurses or even cops if it came to it, if it meant Max would get the care he needed to survive. With determination to save his cop fueling him, Jacob carried Max towards the exit of the slaughter house, he barely felt the man’s weight, and tried his best to keep his grip as gentle as possible, being careful not to jostle him too much. He approached the car, going directly for the backseat and climbing in with Max. Ruby had done an excellent job at getting them here fast without killing any of them, he was sure she could do it again when going to the hospital. Jacob clung to Max almost desperately, as if he thought the cop would be taken from him at any given moment, he kept checking the man’s pulse, it was still too weak in his opinion. He barely saw the streets passing by at dangerous speed, the car jostled and shook, but Jacob’s only concern was to make sure Max didn’t get worse. Ruby broke the silence, and Jacob met her eyes through the rearview mirror. “He’s… the same” not good, but he didn’t get worse, it was something. He was a bit taken back by her second question, why was she worried about him? He wasn’t the one bleeding all over the car. “I’m fine.” He answered, still clinging to Max, if his hands were trembling and his breathing was a little too quick, they were just details.

@theresa
He'll stick around for now, so there's still chance for him to regain his respect on the family, specially if he has front row seat to see Shaun's ass be kicked. An inner conflict would be so interesting, and it's clear whose side Jacob is on. There's still the issue that he's awfully fond of the Enigma right hand, but that's an issue for later lol
I believe they had a good proefessional relationship so far, but again, Jacob is wary of the family after what happened, and would think Theresa was aware of everything. A chat to make what happened with Shaun clear sounds perfect, though i believe theresa has to hear it from Ruby first, so we have wait a bit xDD when you think she knows enough and you're ready for us to thread, just tell me~

@theresa
Hey boss! Ive always seen Jacob as someone who respected the Bianchi and worked for them a few times before Enigma, but never properly joined the ranks, then the Enigma started bloing up stuff in his city and he went knocking in Theresa's door like "yo, i don't like them, you don't like them, we're cool, i'll help you get rid of them." So he would work for the Bianchi until the threat was dealt with and he could go back to his usual life.
Except now his views of the family have shifted, Shaun kinda betrayed him for what he percieves as no reason, and since then he has been increasily more wary and bitter about everyone who were supposed to be his allies, one little push is all it would take for him to ditch everything and leave with all the information he gathered by working with the family for about 6 months.
I don't know how much Theresa would know about her brother's endeavors, but Jacob definetely thinks she's at least aware of everything, so it would be interesting to see them interact, Jacob all wary and expecting her to stab him on the back at any minute. idk exactly what they could be doing, maybe she calls him for a chat or he has to accompany her somewhere, we could discuss some more. o3o
still so excited to have her around tho
