Ruby kept asking herself how did the man manage to look so..warm, so sweet and kindhearted. Less than three months ago, he would have done anything to make her fear him. The trip to the shark tank proved how mean he could get, so evil his plans could turn. He managed to make fear appear in the woman's mind though. A whole different kind of fear. Fear of never seeing him again. Red realised, that if she died that night, drowning, her only regret would be that she wasnt able to see Max, nor Jacob anymore. Death, in her vision was spending your eternity with nothing to look at, black in front of your eyes for the eternity. A blur, occasionally waving like the water's surface. She'd be staring at the last images recognised on her retina, forever. Would there be flashbacks of what she had done through life? She only wanted to see moments captured since installing herself in Chicago. Maybe some pictures from when she was little, and fragile. There was only so much the man in front of her managed to change. He didnt even realise it, all his actions, good or bad, they shaped Ruby differently, pushed her down another path. Crawling now between the world she was raised to survive into, and the world Madden wanted her and Jacob both to live in. What if she just wasnt fit for this world though? Max Madden reached for her hand, his palm's warmness like patching an old wound, keeping her safe. He feared cats? Ruby wondered if that applied to all felines, or just the home pets. She couldnt understand why he feared them though, they were contained creatures, loyal and attentive. Sensible, in their own misterious way. But many couldnt understand her own fear, so why not open her eyes and heart alike and do her best at understanding someone? She looked at him curiously, in a thoughtful way, her head tilting to the side. She could feel the painkillers kick in too, at last. She couldnt feel her nose anymore. Her empty hand slowly moved on top of the one Max used to grab her own, as he reasurringly rubbed his thumb against her skin, and she cupped his knuckles, looking down at that hand pile for a moment, before up at him again. Rejection was something she feared too, and she would hate herself to administrate it to Max. Her chest rose, from a deep breath, and Ruby's eyes looked up at the French's gaze. "Do you want to make a deal?" Her voice was heard again, and the hand on top petted his own once, her eyes darting again from him, to their hands, and back. "How about we help each other overcome our fears? I'm sick of living like this, and you have nothing to fear about cats. I promise." With a hopeful glimpse in her eyes, and what seemed like a determined sheating to her words, Ruby waited for an answer, her lips pressing themselves shut.

Cats. The more you know He shouldn't get attached. The feeling of a broken heart, being by love or friendship was such a pain, a harsh ripping within one's chest no one should have to go through. It makes one stronger yes, and perhaps forges a better idea of what you truly want in a relationship, makes you more aware of who you are and what you wish for. Max was slowly realizing that he was growing dependent of both Ruby and Jacob's presence. There wasn't a day where he didn't think of them, wondering what they were doing, if they were alright and when would be the next time he could see them. At first, when he started doing so, he kept scolding himself, believing he shouldn't be thinking that way, that he should lock them up next time he saw them for the greater good. But he believed that it might not be their greater good to be locked up in a cell for the rest of their lives. A great example of that theory was how Ruby was right now. She was opening up to him like no one else did before, and she showed that there were scars deep under her layers of steal, scars that had a hard time healing. If Ruby was to end up in prison, it was very possible she would go insane. There was no way for Max to be able to inflict her such a treatment today, now that he cared so much about her. He didn't know as much for Jacob, but he believed that there must be scars there too, making him who he is.
She did not push away his hand like he feared she might. Instead she added her own free hand on top of his own. It was a welcome gesture, and he caught with his eyes that she kept moving her eyes to his own and to their hands. And for the first time Max wondered how she felt about him. Was she unsure of her feelings for him like he was, or did she make up her mind on it? Perhaps she was pushing her feelings away, being friendly, lusting or loving. She obviously didn't want Max to witness her weaknesses, nor did she want to confront him to her problems. Ruby's next words almost startled him. A deal? He was going to ask what type of deal, his eyes widening slightly, when she continued to talk. Her voice wasn't shaking as much as earlier, a reassuring fact that told Max that the painkillers were kicking in and that this talk possibly helped her a little bit.
Cats. His irrational fear of cats had actually created rather embarrassing issues by the past. Ruby had witnessed how much self control he could keep when a big cat was only a few steps away from him. However the touch of the felines, no matter the size had always been a source of fear beyond measure for the man. He couldn't quite tell for sure what triggered that fear, but he reckoned it happened during his street experience. Ruby's deal was tempting...but only on the half where he helped her get over her fear, not the part where he had to face cats in order to grow less afraid of them. Knowing Ruby he probably shouldn't have talked about his fear at all, she could use it against him for the laughs. Jacob would probably laugh when he finds out about it, and he will find out, no doubt on that. But he had to agree to this, despite his reluctance. His hand nervously squeezed Ruby's own, not too tightly. He let out a nervous chuckle that surprised even him. "Arlight...okay, we can try that. You promised, so...Maybe I will be able to pick up a kitten without....herm..." his voice became a little thinner towards the end of his sentence, coughing as he added in a low hushed voice "...shitting my pants..." as he talked he had looked away but his eyes came back at Ruby, a smile on his lips. Was he going to regret this decision? Probably. Was it worth it? For Ruby's sake, yes.

Max Madden proved the size of his heart once again, accepting to make a deal that could benefit them both. It was nt a selfish pact, the woman did not hope for miracles on her side, she made this deal more to get the chance and help Madden out with his problem, as a payback for not pushing her away. Even if her intention was indeed to push the man far from her walls. But a promise was a loyal act, and loyalty was Red's only god. Her paranoia was not well reasoned, the blonde trusted Max and Jacob alike, she felt ashamed to allow herself to think for a single moment that any of them could turn their backs at her. It was their choice nevertheless, and she would never blame them if they did so, still. Frankly, Ruby hadnt been questioning any feelings, not towards the mercenary and nor towards the police officer staining her whole being. An old Hebrew saying told "Love, like blood, will always stain." and it was extremely accurate. But with herself only having experienced lust, there was not the luxury for her to afford to think there could be any.. other feelings between her and the French. Though there was always this moment when she asked herself "what if" , late at night when she couldnt sleep and this whole friendship/relationship thing stole her thoughts and sleep. There was the fear that if she got emotionally attached to someone, her loyalties, her father and Enigma would always come between her and her personal life. Secretly, she just didnt want anyone to get hurt, physically and psychically. But she realised that for Max, she'd take any risks. Her feelings for Jacob at that point were not so complicated, they were close and great friends. But Madden kept turning her emotions in a carousel, lead by confusion and hesitance. His smile filled her empty heart, and Ruby found herself smilling warmly too, in a reasurring way. She couldnt laugh of his fear, phobias were nothing to make fun of. But the way he spoke made her let out a small chuckle. "We'll stock on diapers when we start your therapy." The blonde saw her own image in his eyes, pupils focusing back on his blue orbs. She knew one thing for sure, she wont tell anyone about Max's fear until he will get over it. Not even Jacob, if the French didnt want the mercenary to know. "Thank you." Maybe she was repeating herself, but there was really no ammount of thanks she could tell him to make up for his impact on her today. Ruby's hesitant glare moved back on their hands, and she untangled theur fingers, seemingly wanting to get away for a moment, but a hug followed. Ruby's arms wrapped around the man's waist, attempting a genuine embrace. She'd place her head against his chest, his own heat engulfing her with a strange belonging feeling. You're so naïve, blondie.

Cats. The more you know
It didn't matter what she said at that point, that joke being of a terrible taste but only echoed to his stupid words. You walked right into it Madden. What truly mattered was her chuckle and the trace of a smile on her lips. This conversation could have ended on such a bad note. He could have walked out the door, agreeing never to come back again, never to see her face in his sight. But now, they only managed to tie a bow even tighter around them, for the better like the worse. He hushed his mind on the subject of how much he loved her, putting on pause that matter for now. Time will solve that question, just like Time solves many things. He shook his head, his chuckle less nervous than before as he was already forgetting that he just agreed to eventually pick up a cat with his bare hands.
A thank you followed, carrying the gratitude she felt with it. Max could say thank you as well. In a way she was helping him out, making his work easier day by day. The more he thought about it, the more he believed he could make Ruby let go of her murderous job. It sounded selfish of him to want to accomplish such a thing, for both Ruby and Jacob. A madness he couldn't part with. He couldn't imagine that the killing they accomplished didn't strike their mind at some point during the night or day, he couldn't imagine that it could possibly do nothing to them. Yet again, he was using himself as a model, trying to fit Ruby and Jacob into a mold he had build for himself. Someday the righteous cop will snap, and unravel whatever was created in the streets. Perhaps that hunt for making those two criminals what they aren't was a way for Max to stay away from that darker side of him, by accomplishing stupidly 'good' feats, by desperately trying to be the good hand of justice in this town and world of madness. How to let go of a goal when you only know of that one?
She moved away her hands from his own, and for an instant, he thought he might be asked to go, but she laced her arms around him almost instantly after, resting her blond head against his chest. A shiver coursed Max's spine as he looked down to that blond hair, reminiscing old memories of a sad Alice. He wrapped his own arms around her, taking a deep breath as one of his hands coursed trough her hair gently in a reassuring way. Where will everything go from there? Time will tell. But for now he believed she should get some rest. This visit was supposed to be a way for him to simply have a good time away from the hassle of his job, forget about his own problems. But now he was taking care of her own problems, which wasn't a bad thing in itself, but it had been a weight to carry while it lasted. It wasn't the most relaxing nor joyful thing to do, but now that it was done, the weight was lifted and they could both carry on with weighs that mattered more. Max wished for a moment that Jacob had been there, so that he could have perhaps helped him out a little. Everything seemed easier when he was around since he was the voice of reason, always right. But this tied a special trust between himself and Ruby, a trust he wouldn't dare throw away. His lips were sealed, and he wouldn't talk about this to anyone. He didn't need to. There were questions about Ruby's past that remained unanswered, but he wouldn't dare ask anything more today. He spoke a few words in a low and soft voice "Thank you, for opening up."

Love, like blood, will always stain So this was why people kept going with that "talking helps" stuff, which Ruby believed to be just a lie to consolate people. A lie, among the prettiest, which eventually turned out to be just another truth. She was glad it was so, though. The woman had been using that simple line for a long time now, either when talking to a family who's just lost a member because of her father's troublesome actions; pretending to be some therapist just to get closer to a victim, or in many other scenarios. But it never struck her that one day she could be the one the line gets directed at.
Max's arms around her, the shy sound of his beating heart, his content breathing and the way he ran his fingers slowly through her golden locks...it felt like he was torturing her heart, somehow. Ruby couldnt come to a better explanation of what, or how, the French was making her feel probably because of her lack of knowledge in this more emotional area. But daily as the man was around, the web covering her eyes with a fake impression of the people around seemed to slowly deteriorate - Ruby's blue eyes will eventually come clean, and she would be able to see things as they really were. Feeding herself assumptions and lies was unbearable.
The blonde wouldnt have opened up about her scars if Max did not knock and knock and knock on her door until he eventually made it crumble to pieces. It was all his doing, and she appreciated it dearly. Though on the other hand, she did make him lose his shift at work. Or, what was left of it anyway. "Will you still go back to work?" Like a little girl, with a soft tone, Ruby raised her head only a bit, not wanting to let go of the man just yet. If he didnt, she could easily go to the kitchen and get something for both of them to eat or, let him search for a movie to watch. She would even listen to more stories about his past and childhood, if only he wished to share.

Cats. The more you know
Time stops. Every once in a while it happens, like it's something perfectly normal. Time doesn't exist, it fades and becomes an unrealistic element of the world. It is as abstract as space, and cannot be fully understood. Everyone has a different perception of it, and some may claim they know all about it. But the truth is that you cannot chose to see time fly by or yearn for a minute to pass. Right now time was gone, it didn't matter and Max was reminded that time was indeed there by the familiar buzzing of his phone. With Ruby in his arms and his hands holding her to make sure she wouldn't collapse or evaporate, he felt a ripping pain to have to reach into his pocket to turn the damn thing off. Apologies to the PD will be needed, but surely he can come up with something to justify this. He didn't even have to fully lie for this. He could simply say that a friend of his had to go to the hospital because she broke her nose. No need to mention he was the one who did that.
Today wasn't exactly supposed to go in this direction. He was supposed to visit Ruby to relax and have some fun time with her, talk about things that didn't matter, tease each other until nightfall when he'd finally leave. But now he couldn't picture himself leaving. It was like he had opened a safe cage in the woods with a newborn fawn inside. If he left it with the cage open he was afraid a few wolves may come to take it away, destroy it while he had his back turned to it. He felt guilty for picturing the situation like this. He knew Ruby wasn't that weak fawn he pictured, but more a woman who will only grow tougher after each of her broken walls were violated. He wondered if there was a limit to that. Could there come a day where Ruby Blackwood would collapse forever and give up to become a husk, leaving behind everything that made her so strong. He hoped that it would never happen, and he'd hate to be the one responsable for something like this to happen. He'd rather see someone else do it so he could plunge them into earth himself, planting their teeth in the soil and make of their blood the life source of all which lives bellow his feet.
He didn't know how he was supposed to make Ruby never fear water again, and perhaps for the first time he doubted he would be able to do such a thing. Irrational fears were hard to overcome. But if she wanted to see him free of his fear of cats, then he truly wanted to help her overcome her fear of water. An eye for an eye. He ran his hands gently up her back until he felt her turn her head to ask him if he was going back to work. His previous act at not answering the phone was a clear enough answer to that, he answered nonetheless. "The PD won't get anymore Madden today. They'll have to deal with it." depending on how late he went back to his own house, he would see if he would take a night shift for compensation. Ruby was his priority, and he didn't want to get angry once again today. He wouldn't mind sharing a bit of his more enjoyable memories from his childhood with Ruby, given she had opened up so much about her darker past, maybe talking a little about his best memories would cheer her up more. Who knows, maybe she'l share some of her best stories with him as well.
