❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ Great he has finally put enough trust in me to give me a serious mission. I'll make sure not to disappoint. Brann thought while smiling, a most rare event indeed.
He was in the downtown part of Chicago, to be more specific a ,mostly, abandoned neighbourhood where an important contact, neutral to the Bianchi's and Enigma too, was hiding. I don't know what he was thinking, hiding in a city is never a good option, but then again, he probably had no way of getting out of the city either. In any case Smoke was expecting some resistance in the least. He didn't really know what the information was about, but if managed to get close with the civilian it would all go smoothly, if he didn't decide to lie of course, then the situation would have to get... messier. This wasn't his biggest concern though.
There was no information on any competition, but Smoke knew better than to expect only what he was told. This was an important contact, so the Bianchi's were bound to send someone retrieve the information. This was the reason Brann was now sitting crouched on the roof of a house where he could quietly observe his surroundings. There wasn't any question about someone arriving to collect the information, the thing was, he didn't know when they would arrive. There was no point in trying to complete the mission now, as he would risk getting ambushed. It was better just to sit and wait patiently while preparing for what was to come.
The scene was great for a gunfight, a lot of closed spaces, many options when it came to cover, and enough routes of movement that the enemy didn't know where he was going to come from. He didn't take any chances with the equipment, two sub-machineguns, the 12 gauge semi-automatic, two handguns, three throwing knives and the tomahawk, just like in the old days. As he ran every sequence of possible events through his head, like he would in a chess match, and memorized the layout of the current location, he saw something, or someone, he couldn't tell from that distance, approaching the house where the civilian was hiding.
It was time for the game to begin.

Smoke and fire If there's one, there also the other It was nice to know the Bianchi didn’t think Jacob was a complete screw up, he guessed he should have figured that earlier, the white family wasn’t really the sort of people who kept useless and disloyal people around just for the funsies, they still had their uses for Jacob, and that was the nice part about being a flexible employee, people always had some sort of need for his skills. He had started to think that nothing would be coming from that tiger meeting after all, perhaps they weren’t just biding their time before ‘terminating’ his contract, this mission he had received just served to show they still had at least a little bit of trust in him. It was rather simple, find a certain man who had holed himself up in some building in a more abandoned part of downtown, and get some kind of information out of him. The information should be stored somewhere, a computer or a cellphone, maybe pen drive, probably password protected and with a bunch of firewalls, not counting the man himself who would probably put up a fight. But one man who preferred to hide than try to escape shouldn’t be too much trouble. Honestly, Jacob was a bit disappointed with the choice location the target had chosen to hide, it was in the middle of the city, everyone could see his face if he even poked his nose outside, it was full of low lives crawling everywhere and information travelled fast for the right price, of course it would reach the ears of the ones most interested. He could see the building in the distance, as he approached it, the shadows of the tall buildings obscuring his figure as he chose to approach the situation from stealth. If he could get in, get the information and get out, that would be grand, but things never were that simple, and he expected to at least have to kill the target if he was foolish enough to fight back. Creeping from the shadows, his hoodie concealing his features, and even if someone caught a glimpse of him, the mask would stop anyone from seeing his face, he quietly made his way through the back of the building, where he saw a side entrance, that would be easier to avoid being detected. ❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ The would be competitor was concealing his figure very well, he saw from the rooftop, a hoodie and a mask made sure his identity was safe. Smoke had no use for such trivialities, of course his identity would get leaked at some point so why try and hide it? Better to embrace your profession... even though you have to be alert and with your guard up 24/7.
As the masked man was going through the shadows of the buildings, might have even went unnoticed to an untrained eye, Brann followed him leaping from roof to roof with particular ease given by the countless hours of training in urban territory. The Bianchi guy was entering the building through the back. I shouldn't follow him, better to get the drop on him. Plus he has a big lead already, I'd have to be quick and I'd make a lot of noise alerting him of my presence. Instead of this I'll just wait by the front door, and since the house is pretty small, I'll be able to hear when the mercenary bursts in and still have the element of surprise.
From then on, it would be smooth sailing, or so Smoke thought. He was very confident in his skills, and wasn't overestimating himself in the least, but his next opponent wasn't just your ordinary henchman. Brann could tell that much too, and was on edge. If the mission proved too difficult he could very easily evade, but as his first real contract he didn't want to lose. The more Ryan trusted him, the better.
He would just have to wound the Bianchi mercenary, enough to make him retreat. He had no reason to kill him, but he wouldn't hesitate if it came to that. As an alternative to getting whatever device the information was on he could always destroy it so no one actually got it. After that it would be a piece of cake to track the contact down and capture him.
Here we go. Brann thought while he heard an alarmed noise from the inside.

Smoke and fire If there's one, there also the other The wall wasn’t terribly high for Jacob to jump over as he landed on the backyard soundlessly and approached the back door. There were quite a few locks in place, and he would bet the front door was even better guarded. Nothing more paranoid than a criminal who knows there’s people after them, it reminded him a bit of Ruby’s door, except she used decent locks, not this cheap stuff a more forceful tug could break it. It wasn’t difficult to pick all the locks, but it took Jacob a few moments to do all of them. The door opened soundlessly and Jacob creeped inside. The house was a trash palace, with leftover foods rotting away on every surface, and he couldn’t hold back the sneer of disgust. Petty criminals, always so disgusting, was it so hard to put the trash away? He wasn’t there to evaluate the apartment’s hygiene, however. He had information to find. He went from the kitchen to the living room, and an alarmed voice talked suddenly, as a ratty looking max tried to scutter away as soon as he saw Jacob’s threatening figure, but the mercenary was quicker, grabbing him by the back of his shirt and hauling the man into the couch, point a gun to his head “Don’t move.” He warned his voice very low and calm. “Heard you have some interesting information, care to share or you’d prefer a bullet in your head.” The man stuttered something, trying to talk his way out of it without revealing too much. Jacob rolled his eyes, his patience running it was clear the man had no will to talk, and Jacob hadn’t the time to torture any information out of him, there were orders to avoid offing the man if possible, but Jacob was spiteful, and accidents happened, like right now his trigger finger slipped twice, ops, what a shame. The man fell down like a sack of potatoes, dead with frightened expression, and Jacob left him there, going to look for wherever he had stored the information. He eventually found a little station in one of the rooms, with all sorts of equipment, and most importantly, a notebook. It was password protected and possibly encrypted, and although Jacob was sure he could crack it given enough time, he could very well do it somewhere else. It was better to first secure the target before trying anything with it. And so, Jacob put the notebook away in the bag he was carrying, before exiting the house from the same door he had entered, since it would be stupid to bother to unlock all the front door locks. Still keeping a low profile, Jacob silently made his way around the house, figuring it would be easier to go out the front gate than climb the wall again. He thought the mission was going without a hitch, easily done and now he just had to go back with the prize. But surprise, surprise! He wasn’t alone, he was turning the corner when he saw the tall figure near the front door, seemly waiting for something, either the target or Jacob himself, and he backtracked back behind the wall, hoping the man hadn’t seen him, but the gunshots would be a dead giveaway. Maybe he should’ve jumped over the wall after all. TAG: @tavi WORDS: .NOTES: .

❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ The sounds of alarm from the house were very quickly followed by two gunshots and a dull thud. There was practically no time for Smoke to enter the house and get the advantage of an ambush. There was no reason he would have shot the man unless he got what he came for, and now he'll be leaving the way he came! I have to either go through the house or take the passage wich led to the back yard.
Trying the handle of the door he found it very much locked, probably a lot more than just a lock, he thought. Crap, I don't have time and a gunshot would be too loud. I have to go through the back yard and jump the wall before he gets away. I'll be able to surprise him from the back and at close range too. my trusty shotgun will do fine. Now only to enter Reflex mode and kill the masked bastard.
Four meters separated Brann from the corner. In one step he covered half the distance and also got his shotgun out and ready to blast the escaping mercenary. Another step and he turned the corner...to see a mask right before his eyes. Though very surprised, only half a second passed before instinct took hold of him and the adrenaline kicked in. Brann swiftly took his left hand away from his shotgun, knowing it would be useless in a grapple fight, and grabbed one of his knives while with his right one gripped firmly the handle of the tomahawk strapped to his right leg.
The only option presented to him at such a close range was...well... a headbutt. It was bound to be successful, any foe no matter the size would be at least pushed back by the strike. He even managed to put a crack in the mask. This gave him just enough time to fully draw his axe and go in a defensive stance while still keeping close if the other mercenary decided to pull a gun.
So much action, the thrill of it was so exhilarating that it made the stone on his face melt into the brightest, and quite creepy, smile he has had in quite a while. It was finally time to test his mettle against some of the locals.

Smoke and fire If there's one, there also the other Of course he couldn’t go back the way he came without the other person noticing, the man practically run into Jacob. He managed to take a few steps back however, and it was enough time for him to take out his knife, the one he never went anywhere without, the weapon was quick and familiar, but he wasn’t able to do much more. The enemy wasted no time, Jacob suspected the man knew he was around, just waiting the right moment to strike. The headbutt came quick, giving him no time to block or dodge, and once again his habit of wearing masks proved useful. He stumbled back a few steps throwing his arm to try to slash the man with his knife, they were close enough that dodging that attack would be difficult. His mask took most of the impact, thankfully, it became a bit crooked on his face, but it didn’t break or shatter, much less fell down and Jacob quickly righted it again. Who was this guy? Clearly he could only be here for a reason, and that was the information Jacob was carrying. He wasn’t given many details on what it was, or even if it would have any use for anyone but the Bianchi, he hadn’t thought it was of much importance, for all he knew it was the balance checks of the Bianchi whorehouse, but if more people was after it, it could only mean it was quite important, and he would be dammed if he would let someone else take it from him. The two of them were too close, the enemy had an Axe, and was taller than Jacob by quite a bit. He took a step back, as if he was going to start retreating, realizing that although he was good in a knife fight, the other had the superior weapon, and Jacob was also carrying an important device, he didn’t need to stay here an waste time. In split second Jacob made his decision, and instead of backing off, he threw a kick on the man’s legs as a distraction, threw his body against him to try to make him lose balance, his knife aiming at the arm the man was holding the axe. It was more meant to surprise that to truly harm, to at least give Jacob a chance to try to back away. TAG: @tavi WORDS: .NOTES: .

❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ The mask got in the way of the frontal damage a normal headbutt would do but it still managed to get his opponent to back off while he pulled out his weapons. In the meantime however, because the masked man was quick on his feet, he managed to get out his knife too.
Smoke shouldn't have to worry about it though, the mercenary would be a fool to think, even for a second, that he would prevail if he engaged in combat against an axe. He was simply outmatched. But that made people unpredictable. The cornered mouse may attack the cat. And even win if he got lucky enough, but Brann wouldn't let anything like that happen, he had too much experience to be surprised by anything.
As the man had been knocked back, he made an effort to try and cut Smoke, but to no avail. Having his knife out in his offhand, it was easy to parry the incoming blow which was delivered pretty poorly as the man was trying to get a hold of his balance again. The next thing the mercenary did, confused Brann and nearly managed to catch him off guard. The man backed away a step, like he was going to turn around and make a go for it, but then, as if he had made a decision, threw a kick at Brann's leg which managed to make contact. Rather than get pushed back by the blow, or slip and fall down, giving his foe a chance to back away, Smoke quickly crouched just as the full weight of his opponent slid in through his foot and into Brann's knee. It looked like this was the best course of action, as the knife the knife narrowly missed Brann's right arm, only cutting through his coat and bouncing off of the submachine gun strapped to his side.
It was now his turn, the masked man threw his whole body against the blow, so it was just a matter of where to counter attack, in order to throw him completely off balance. Making a split decision, Brann extended his other leg and threw a kick straight to the man's stomach. At this range it would be impossible to dodge. In the mean time while the other recovered from the kick, he could get out a handgun, hmmm but it would be too close range for any of my guns...it will have to do as a scare and I'll see if he bites. at that range even if he had his finger on the trigger it wouldn't give enough time to actually pull it before the opponent managed to counter attack, making the whole thing useless. But if he didn't realise it, it would prove very much effective.
Hand over the data, or you'll have a mask of lead instead of this current one Brann said in the most imposing voice he could muster. He may not be a good actor, but none the less who needed acting when all he said was actually true?

Smoke and fire If there's one, there also the other This was not some run of the mill criminal like the ones that littered the streets of Chicago, they had barely started a scuffle, and Jacob could already tell he was quite experienced opponent, he had a youthful face that fooled you in a false sense of security, but Jacob knew the more innocent looking were the ones who presented true danger, the reason he didn’t let yourself to trust or underestimate anyone no matter how young or harmless they seem. If you thought they were after you, it was probably true. The headbutt left Jacob off balance, and the man easily deflect his knife with one of him own. The tackle also didn’t go exactly as planned, the man somehow managed to duck from the full impact, and the knife teared cloth and not much else. It was enough for Jacob to feel he had a gun strapped to his side, that could be dangerous. His foot still connected with the man’s knee, and although that should have made him at least stumble, it wasn’t enough to stop a counterattack. A foot connected with Jacob’s stomach that made him back off and splutter, feeling winded. There was click of a gun, and Jacob looked up to see the man holding a handgun. Jacob was quick to do the same, switching the knife to his offhand and taking of his own gun, pointing at the man’s chest, finger on the trigger, one wrong move and he would shoot, but he wasn’t going to make the first move. If he was going to be shot, he certainly wouldn’t be the only one. He glared through the eyeholes of his mask, feeling the strap of his bag that contained the notebook digging into his shoulder as the man threatened him. He held the bag in front of his body, protecting his torso with the notebook that was apparently very valuable. He had no shame in using the prize both wanted to protect himself, he’d rather the thing was destroyed than let the other have it. “Funny, but no.” He answered simply, not feeling very amused at that moment. His torso hurt from the man’s attack, but the man hadn’t shot Jacob on the first chance he got, so now they could only stare at each other. TAG: @tavi WORDS: .NOTES: .

❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ The man wasn't dumb enough to fall for his trick. Just as he pulled out his gun, the other imitated him and left them at a stand off. He saw him moving something around under his clothes, probably to protect his vitals. It would save him from the first shot but not another, though this didn't really matter, since Brann was not going to shoot the man himself.
The stunt he was about to pull required great finesse, and a whole lot of concentration, but if he executed it correctly, it would leave the masked man stunned and unable to make a move. Actually, from what he saw of him, in these brief interactions they had, the mercenary had very good senses, and was able to make good split decisions. He might be able to run, or even go for his knife. It didn't matter. If I don't do this I might get shot, and it wouldn't be a shallow wound or a graze, it would go straight through my heart, that was where the assassin was aiming and he could see it very clear.
It's now or never, Smoke thought, while letting his gun hand tremble just a bit. After this he switched where he was aiming a couple of times, once aiming for the head, the next for the throat, and the next time for the heart. This would make him seem nervous or unsure, giving his opponent a sign of relief at least. The next part was the most difficult, but Smoke had done it in the past when faced with such situations. He moved his aim like he was uncertain again, but stopped in the middle of the action, and shot straight through the barrel of the other man's gun. Not doing enough damage to the man himself, but this would surely shock him.

Smoke and fire If there's one, there also the other What now? They had a gun pointed at each other, one pull of a trigger and they both would have a bad time. He realized the computer wouldn’t be able to protect him very much, it would at best delay any injuries, but it would also mean the man would destroy what he was after, and at least that would be a satisfaction. Mind racing, Jacob tried to figure out the best course of action. It wasn’t necessary for him to kill the man, or even win a scuffle against him, if he managed to somehow get away, it would be enough. True, it would be less satisfying, but he wasn’t here to have fun playing with some random criminal’s blood. They stared at each other some more, the man did nothing at first, silence ringing on his ears, as Jacob narrowed his eyes at the slight tremble he saw on the man’s hand, it was quick, a blink and you miss it, as if the man was having second thoughts about his skills, if he could really shoot. Jacob tilted his head slightly, confused by the man’s behavior, the enemy gun switching targets quickly, the man appearing to have been struck by a sudden indecisiveness. There was something that didn’t add up to the whole situation, Jacob’s first assessment of the man had given him the impression he was quite experienced, skillful enough to take Jacob by surprise like that and now… He took a step back, if the man genuinely nervous, that would make him unpredictable, he could shoot anywhere or give up the fight (yeah, right, so not gonna happen), Jacob kept his pistol pointed firmly at the man. “What ar-” His question was cut short by bang from the man’s gun as he shot, in a split second his aim became steady, confirming the suspicious he was just acting, but was truly surprising was the bullet nailing Jacob’s gun on the barrel. The mercenary couldn’t keep a grip on his weapon, and he dropped it besides him, his eyes wide in surprise behind the mask. The thing about masks though, was that it covered Jacob’s emotions very well, and he had always being quick on his feet, he could stay and attack back, or not. Thing is, Jacob was not stupid, he knew when he was outmatched, he didn’t came prepared to a fight against someone highly trained and well-armed, he was expecting a quick retrieval, and now he had the prize. So he turned his back and hightailed out of there, turning back on the corner he had come from, using the house as protection in case the man tried to shoot him one more time. He made for wall he had jumped over to enter the backyard, doping trash cans, wooden planks and other garbage littering the place, keeping low, fast and doing some unpredictable turns to try to avoid the man’s possible bullets, but the bag with the notebook made it a bit difficult to run freely. ❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ Even though he was wearing a mask, Brann could tell his opponent was very shocked by reading his body language. He could do one of two things, stay and fight with the remaining knife he had, or turn tail and run. apparently he chose the latter, escaping and cleverly using the house as cover in order to obscure his aim.
The thing is... Smoke wasn't about to give up so easily after he grappled with the man. He quickly followed him. His taller legs would give him an advantage, and the assassin also had to keep the stolen computer in mind. Smoke wasn't able to get a clear shot on him however, because of his unpredictable movements and the fact that he kept throwing debris in his away which didn't let him keep a steady run.
Seeing this Brann gave up completely on sharpshooting and settled for spray n' pray. It wasn't very hard to unstrap his two submachine guns while running, and now, every time he even had line of sight with the man he sent volley after volley of bullets, hoping at least one would nail him, stopping his sprint, or making him drop the precious computer.
Brann didn't much care for the opponent. The mission didn't say anything about him. His only concern was the data. He either had to retrieve it or destroy it, so he had to catch up to the man or make sure the computer he carried was destroyed. He had plenty of stamina to go on. Getting fired upon combined with the weight of the computer had to slow the masked mercenary down.
At some times, when he was closer than usual, he cleared the thrash with his shotgun, before it even reached the ground. That guy has to realise that he is NOT going to shake me off no matter how hard he tries. Brann was thinking while giving chase. Going through coridors, alleyways and jumping over small walls, this was not very difficult to Smoke, after all he was trained as a hitman in urban territory, the difficult part was the speed the other mercenary had, the lead he had and the fact that he wouldn't stop throwing everything he found in his path to the ground. At one point Smoke was pretty sure he saw a puppy being thrown.

Smoke and fire If there's one, there also the other Sprinting through the familiar alleys of Chicago was something Jacob did way too often. He could hear the gunshots of rapid fire gun behind him, but his knowledge of the alleys and unpredictable patterns helped him to avoid being hit so far, a few bullets still getting too close to comfort. He needed to lose this man, soon, or his luck was bound to run out at some point. Ducking and turning randomly, where he knew there were more branching alleys, Jacob did his best to keep ahead, he was fast and had good endurance, his strategy of throwing trash on the enemy’s path was always a good one when he had to run through tight alleys. There was the more powerful shot of what Jacob identified as a shotgun. The enemy was very well armed, as he had already figured that out, but at least now he knew somewhat what to expect. He wasn’t paying attention at what he was throwing, more worried about losing the enemy. Trash cans, planks, black trash bags, a random shopping cart, at one point there was a muffled whiny sound when he threw down a pile of trash that apparently had some kind of animal hiding on it, he would keep doing it until he run out of stuff. He made a sudden turn, and it appeared he would be trapped by the fence at the end of the alley, but Jacob knew what he was doing. He climbed over the fence, dropping down swiftly before he resumed his running with barely any pause, the computer was a minor annoyance once he got used to the weight and kept a mindful to where it was, and the incentive of running or being shot was enough to make Jacob make sure there was no mistakes. He turned away from the fence, going to the more crowded part of downtown, where people milled about going through their business. Would the stranger dare start shooting in the middle of a crowd and call police attention. He would find out soon, he supposed. TAG: @tavi NOTES: .

❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ The Masked Assassin was a clever opponent. He managed to lead Smoke into one of the more populated areas of the downtown, so now he couldn't shoot without getting the attention of the crowd and eventually the police. Or at least that was what the other mercenary thought. Even though Brann couldn't shoot directly for the man, he could however use one of the handguns as a means to clear a path through the crowd. He was sure this wouldn't get too much attention, this was the Downtown part of Chicago after all, so gunshots would be a daily thing.
Get the hell out of my way! Brann yelled at the top of his lungs, in a most thunderous and imposing voice. If this actually got the attention of the police, it would mean they were going to follow his adversary too. And if things got too tense he could always escape a couple of cop cars.
And so the chase continued, with only one thing changed, Brann was a lot more determined now. He wouldn't let run of the mill assassin win. He was trained for this job ever since the day he was born, and had 13 years of experience behind his back. No ordinary man can out smart me. And no mortal will kill me until I've reached my goal. As he was going through the scattered crowd, something caught his eye. A civilian was in the middle of drawing on him. He didn't have time to disarm the man peacefully, so the only choice given to him was to shoot him even before he drew his gun completely. He couldn't risk anything, not when it came to this contract. He was facing a worthy opponent, so he wouldn't give him any advantages.
Well, I guess the garden of god is big and it's border ever changing applies to this situation too. How dumb could have the shot man been to draw his gun when I already had mine out. No matter, I need to focus now so I can catch this little punk who thinks he can outrun me.

Smoke and fire If there's one, there also the other No such luck in trying to stop his pursuer by using civilians to intimidate him into stop shooting. The man was relentless, and apparently not afraid to bring attention to himself by shooting his gun in the middle of a crowded street. He had thunderous voice, Jacob heard his yell distantly, never stopping moving. People scattered out of his way, nobody wanted to be barreled by a frantically running man. But what really made the people open way and panic, was the gunshot that echoed. Just a regular day around downtown Chicago gunshots and death, still, after that, he was sure the police would be called. Why couldn’t this man trip, bash his head and die? It would make Jacob’s life so much easier. Adrenaline kept him running, he knew if the enemy caught up to him, he would be the one at disadvantage and severely outmatched in weapons. He kept going forward, trying to blend in with the panicked civilians. It was kinda hard with his mask, but people tended to not pay attention when scared, and he doubted the other criminal was going to be so easily fooled anyway, it was more for the sake of making himself difficult to hit. He couldn’t run for the rest of his life, but he could certainly try. But even his determination couldn’t fuel him forever. He entered another side alley, doing some twist and turns, hoping his pursuer get left behind on the crowds still trying to stay unpredictable in the hopes of losing the other. He looked behind him to see if the guy was still after him, hoping he put at least some distance, enough for him to make a pause a catch his breath for a few moments. TAG: @tavi NOTES: .

❝ Got a Smoke? ❞ The man wasn't getting away so easily. He followed him through the crowd, now certain that the police was going to arrive, sooner or later, he wasn't going to let the mission fail. If he couldn't get the information, of which he was pretty sure he couldn't, plan B had to come into practice. Destroy the Intel at any cost.
The masked mercenary was going through the crowd when, suddenly, he entered an alley. The distance between them was not that great, so Brann could make it to him pretty quickly...but why should I do that? Let him breathe a little. When he least expects it, I'll strike."" And so, Smoke went to the right wall of the alley entrance and grabbed onto the service ladder and began quickly jumping from floor to floor until he got to the roof. A few steps and he had the assassin in his sights. He was still pretty far away, and Brann only had close range weaponry. Only the handgun was accurate enough for a shot at that range. I should have brought a scope with me"" Brann thought whilst slowing his breathing down and ironsighting for a better aim. A headshot was out of the question., nor could he aim for the legs or arms. It wouldn't be enough to stop his opponent in his tracks.
And then where CAN I shoot?"" And that's when Smoke remembered. The laptop was covered by the man's clothing, and the last time he saw it, it was across his abdomen. That information was vital. Even though the man wasn't looking in his direction, he had a way to make the shot possible. With a powerful whistle, Smoke go the assassin to look his way, making for a perfect view to the man's abdomen, where the notebook lay hidden. And Smoke fired.
❝ This ain't my first fuckin time here. ❞
