Needing help to clean the mess With a loud splash, the dark waters parted to accept the mass of the car, eating it slowly as the water engulfed each and every inch of the machinery. Max remained silent once more until the limousine was completely gone. It may have taken a while, but just like ghosts of a past life, he wanted to see this one truly die, with no second thoughts. As soon as the last bubble rose to the surface, Max felt a weight come off his shoulders. There was still a grip around his throat, the one weighing guilt on his mind that he had killed someone out of vengeance and actually took all those weeks to pursue that vengeance. He had put so much effort in finding the one who hurt him, it terrified him that he went out of his way to do such a thing.
Like eating another chocolate after saying 'last one' ten chocolates before, Max had given in to his pulsions despite saying no to himself countless times before. He had killed before, only it was for self defense, never by vengeance. But then again, he had never been a direct target like he was that night at the slaughterhouse. Never had he been so close to death, felt so much pain, hated someone so much he was ready to give his own life to see them gone. His hatred was accentuated by the fact that Jack White threatened Jacob and Ruby's life, and nearly took the merc's life at the same time. He could not bear to think that he could threaten them again, kill them, erase them from the surface of the earth, and leave him to deal with that loss. However he had seen the pictures of children in the wallet when Jacob took them out. It had given him a punch in the guts so hard that now he started to question his choice. Did that man had a family? Was he just doing all this to protect them? He believed that Ruby and Jacob may have gone to the same extents as Jack White if their own child was in danger. And they proved as much by killing all those people to save him, a friend. The thought was slowly destroying him. And even after seeing the car disappear under the water, the pain remained.
His leg was starting to hurt from all the standing, but he couldn't bring himself to sit down. A shiver coursed his spine as he looked at Jacob, feeling bad for all he had done. He felt miserable, not worthy of Jacob's loyalty, not deserving to be next to such a strong person. He never saw him break, never heard him weep. Even when he was in the hospital bed he kept to himself and stayed strong as much as he could. Jacob may not know it but Max admired him more than anyone else. He couldn't bring himself to push him away despite what he had done, because he still believed the man was a good person, simply living in a different fashion as himself, with different rules and paths. Those rules were ciphered, but Max kept finding out about them slowly. So he let go of his fear and decided to lean on the man and accept his help rather than refusing it constantly.
He ripped his gaze away from the dark waters to pull Jacob into his arms, or more like ask for Jacob to lace his arms around him. He rested his own weight more on one leg, while he dug his face in Jacob's shoulder, his hands gripping the shirt slowly and softly. He had a hard time believing those murderous hands of his could hold someone with such care today, it made him believe perhaps he could still remain the same despite what he had done. "What have I done...Tell me I did the right choice...tell me those weren't his children on the picture..." he needed Jacob's reassuring words, something that could help him hang onto reality and not fall into the abyss of guilt he knew far too well.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Vengeance felt good. Seeing the end of a man who hunted them like animals was sweet, even if Max had stolen Jacob’s chance to take vengeance with his own hands, it was still nice to see Jack’s mangled body sink into the depths of the ocean, never to be seen again. The two of them spent some time watching the car sink, the silence engulfing them wasn’t awkward or oppressive, it was just two men seeing the end of something, putting a nightmarish chapter of their lives behind them. The last bubble popped from the sea, before the water went to its usual calm, like nothing had happened, the ocean made for a good grave, especially for people who should be forgotten.
Now the only thing Jacob had to do was to deal with the aftermath. If it was just him, it’d be easy to just let it go, forget about this incident like many others, it didn’t affect him anymore. But Max was different, he cared too much, he had way too many morals, he was a good man who felt bad for killing even those who deserved it, and he killed a man in cold blood. His guilt must be overwhelming right now, in a way Jacob couldn’t possibly understand. For what felt like the tenth time today, Jacob wished he could reach out for a hug, attempt to smother the bad feelings away with his presence, but Max had left it clear that wasn’t what he wanted.
He took a good look at Max, who seemed to be still on edge and ready to break. He caught his haunted eyes once Max turned towards him. The man was strong, he usually was the one to be there for him and Ruby. That day when he was poisoned, Max was the one who supported them both. When Max was the one hospitalized, Jacob and Ruby almost broke down, Ruby was crying, and Jacob felt so stupidly possessive he almost pushed Ruby away when she also needed the most. He look back at the dark waters of the ocean, thinking what they should do now, leave Max alone was not an option, even If the cop asked him to. They also needed a way back home, without the car they’d need a cab, he doubted the subway was still working this late.
Jacob was cut from his thoughts when he felt arms wrap around him. The action so sudden and unexpected that he froze for a second, like he always did when Max initiated hugs. This time though, there was no further hesitation, he hugged back in the way he wanted so much this entire night, bringing Max down closer to his height, attempting to show all the support through that one action, engulf Max on his presence to hopefully make his doubts go away, the hug was filled with all his care, all the love he felt for Max. “You did the right thing.” He said with all the conviction he felt. “It doesn’t matter who those children are, it was either White or us. Don’t think for a second he’d just give up after all that happen. It was kill or be killed.” He meant every word, and part of him couldn’t really understand why Max felt bad for killing that man, but that was one of the differences between them that he had come to accept.

Needing help to clean the mess That was what Max wanted to hear. All of his guilt didn't leave, but he already felt much better following Jacob's words. The way he held him was also helping him, making him feel he wasn't alone in this, and that the merc was there to support his choice. "I like the way you think" his voice was a little cracked, but it still felt strong, like steel heated up but still unwilling to bend. To him, Jacob was right, like many times before. The only thing keeping him from completely feeling better were his moralities, but what were morals once you are dead? Max didn't need to kill more, all he did tonight was to protect those he loved from dying or feeling the pain he felt. For some miracle, Jacob's words did more to the cop than anyone could imagine or see. Max now understood the man's ways in life, why he killed and why he did his job. It was to live, and kill before he was killed. If he stuck to killing other mercenaries or people who could threaten other people's lives, then Max could agree with his ways.
He didn't wish for it, but his affection for Jacob had grown over the past few weeks, months to stages he thought had been destroyed. The way he held him, he couldn't help but remember what used to be another life, a long time ago. The warmth, scale, muscles, tension yet softness, the breathing, it all soothed him but also set off an alarming voice in his mind. Responding to that, he slowly left his hands slide from the man's back to his shoulders, removing his head from the crook of his neck. He looked at him in the eyes, his gaze seemed to want to escape, perhaps afraid Jacob will see something in there he didn't want him to.
There was still gratitude in those eyes, and the brazier from before was nearly gone. The steel was still there, a hardness in the blue orbs that may take the rest of the night before it left. There was something else there too, not very identifiable yet, lurking in a corner. His chest rose evenly but high, his way to dealing with his personal pressure. He had calmed down a great deal in the last 5 minutes, so his present panic and pressure was a weak one. He gently squeezed Jacob's shoulders where his hands rested, in some sort of reassuring gesture, to tell him he will be alright, despite the fact that it didn't look like it. "Sorry for stealing your kill..." he said, trying to smile a bit for the sake of the dark humor, only one side of his mouth raising in a smile, pulling the other with it.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Reassuring people felt like a hit and miss with Jacob. He could either makes things better, change the person’s mind and even make the guilt vanish, or he could makes things worse, trigger an angry reaction and make the person hate him on the process. Thankfully this time seemed to be the first case, Jacob truly believed in what he said, he was afraid Max wouldn’t though, he could understand how the thought of making some kids lose their father could bother some people, even if to him it made no difference. He had seen that picture before, but when he thought about it, he only saw a man who had too much power and wanted to use said power to kill not only him, but his friends as well. Many times life was like that, only the stronger survive, and up until now, Jacob had managed to be the stronger one.
He didn’t care that Jack was dead, he was glad even, but he did care that it mattered to Max, and that made him almost feel regretful, for not being there when it happened, for being unable to make things magically better. What he could do now was hold Max and hope it was enough, make the man feel everything was eventually going to be fine, even if Jacob couldn’t really promise that. He felt Max’s hands go from his back to his shoulders, and lift his head so the two of them could meet eye to eye. Jacob still looked worried, searching for something in Max’s eyes, there was a deep gratitude there, the hardness that seemed to be settled there for now, but also something Jacob couldn’t name, but it made him scared somehow, not from Max or anything the man could or would do, but from the strange feelings he couldn’t explain.
They stared at each other, words felt unnecessary now from his part, Max seemed to be calming down, coming back to himself slowly, no longer on the edge of breaking, though he suspected it would be quite a while until Max was back to what he was before, if he ever did. Jacob chose to believe that he would, or the guilt he felt would go to unbearable levels, and that was exactly what he didn’t need right now. Max made a joke, so unexpected it made Jacob laugh, more in relief than really thinking it was very funny. “Yeah, that was unfair. I expect compensation.” He smiled, relief clear in his eyes.
They were done here, Jacob wanted to leave this harbor behind him for at least the next few months, this place was piling up more and more bothersome memories. He kept one arm around Max as he turned around to start walking away, wishing to keep the cop close to him. “So, I’d say let’s go home, but it’s late and we have no car… how long until we find a cab, you think?”

Needing help to clean the mess That laughter, a roar clearing clouds in Max's clouded mind. He was glad to have managed to do as much as that, manage to take away Jacob's worry from his face for even a small moment. He did not wish to see him worry again. The cop had seen enough worry on that man's face for a lifetime after the hospital. Why did Jacob have to worry so much? Did Max really do so much for him that he deserved all that attention from the merc? He sure loved his smiles over any worried face the man could possibly give him. He could see better why Jacob wore masks, even if it was quite clear the second time they ever met. Such anger on a man's face, such worry, and such kindness. All expressions that were so extreme that he needed a mask to conceal them. What was so attractive about a mask, may be just that: the possibility to be a statue without even having to try. Conceal who you are, the feelings carved on your face, letting only the eyes to be seen, window to the soul some may say. And a window to his soul were Jacob's eyes right now.
Jacob's presence was empowering, and it's what will keep Max going. They both started to walk away from the harbor, element of dark pasts and bad memories, only deserving to burn in flames once more. Max almost wanted to see the ocean devour this place and its memories. What happened was the past, yet it helped make the present. He kept and arm around Jacob's waist, since the man seemed to wish to keep him close, and quite frankly, Max may need some support soon. A straining pain started to pull on his calf where he took a hook about a month ago. He had stubbornly stopped to carry around his crutch and especially tonight, it would be stupid to have it and useless. He didn't wish to show that it pained him, but he won't be able to hide it once he starts limping. Hopefully they'll find a cab before that happens.
"We'll find a cab don't worry. And I'll find compensation for stealing." his voice was calm as they walked, his crooked smile remaining for a little longer before his jaw relaxed once more. He enjoyed the night very much actually. It may be late, but the calm, the sound of waves nearby, Jacob's presence, it all participated in reminding Max of some of those late evenings in summer where he'd stay outside in the mountains, beach or country, exiling himself from his family, sometimes accompanied by Alice and Antoine, or just Alice. She was the only one missing in their crazy lot, the one Max wished could complete the family picture. But he wasn't alone, what he had seen written on his wall months ago was but a lie today.
They walked for a while before they reached the still busy streets of the harbor, bars still opened or some late night restaurants serving dinner for some very late customers. Who would eat at 2 am, Max had no idea, but it sure looked entertaining. There were a few cabs waiting for customers to come out, like a net ready to catch fish. Things didn't turn out to be as complicated as they thoughts it may be. As he sat in the back of the cab, Max could feel the relief in his leg, sighing silently. He leaned his head back as they drove, wondering if he would doze off, but knowing that he won't. If Jacob would let him, he would give his own address. He didn't think the man would want them to go back to his house, the surprise that Max knew about it was probably enough for one night, or at least that was what the cop believed.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- It was oddly intimate the way the two walked away from the harbor, close to each other in a half embrace, Jacob wouldn’t be surprised if a few people started giving them strange looks. Not that he cared about judgements from strangers, but as a habit, he didn’t like to bring attention to himself. Luckily it was already quite late, very few people dared to stay outside at this hour in a crime ridden city such as Chicago. It felt good to have Max this close, a warm feeling filling his chest, for being able to be there for him, for being able to make him feel better. Jacob felt like he could fight the entire world if it meant Max and Ruby would be happy; He never meant to feel so deeply for these two, never even knew he was capable of caring so much, and now here he was, doing exactly that.
The harbor was left behind, along with its memories and ghosts. In its place appeared the busy streets, restaurants and pubs open everywhere, the only sign of life coming from the buildings. Lights chasing away the darkness in a city that seemed to never sleep. It was surprising to Jacob that there still would be people eating outside at this hour, but at least it meant there were plenty cabs available for them to take. That was good, they wouldn’t have to hunt down for one, things seemed to be looking up for Max and him.
They choose one and Max made himself comfortable on the back seat, Jacob climbed inside after him, still keeping himself close to Max, not from fear or worry this time, but simply because he wanted and there was no one there to stop him. Before Max could speak, Jacob gave the driver his own address. The action didn’t even had much thought behind it, he wanted to get home, and Max knew where it was already, the choice was simple. It was odd that he still didn’t care about Max knowing where he lived, he was curious, true, and he thought the cop eventually would share the knowledge with Ruby, but that was also fine with him. It’d be a shame to lose his corner no one knew about, but in the end, he didn’t mind as much as he thought he would.
The cab sped away with them, it shouldn’t take very long for them to reach his building, he didn’t even know if Max would want to come with him, maybe he’d want to go home and rest, but somehow, Jacob was still a bit wary to leave him alone, the events of the night was still to fresh, Jacob knew how thoughts could haunt you when you were left alone to dwell on them. He leaned back against the car seat, so close to Max their arms were touching, and he looked at the cop, his worry no longer the strongest emotion. “you’re not going home now, are you?” He asked softly so only he and Max could hear the conversation.

Needing help to clean the mess The car drove calmly as they headed to Jacob's place. It had surprised Max that he would be willing to get back there, and to him it was a sign that Jacob wasn't yet fully reassured at the thought of leaving him alone for the night. It was understanding and Madden knew he would do the same. However he did shoot a curious look at the man, mixed with surprise as his address was spoken. So it didn't bother him that Max found out about his little den. He didn't intend to tell anyone about it, not even Ruby. He had found it by accident quite frankly, a twist of fate. If Jacob wanted to tell their blonde girl where he lived, then it was up to him, Max would have no part in that.
He could sense Jacob's wish to be close to him, their arms touching in an electric sensation. Max wondered if Jacob was tired, if he was sleeping when he knocked on his door earlier. He didn't look exhausted but he sure looked like some sleep wouldn't be a bad thing for him. The cop didn't believe he would be able to sleep at all tonight, and until Jacob spoke again, he thought he was going to walk back home and crash into his own couch, petting Lucius until morning and not show up at the PD. He looked at the man, tearing his eyes away from the window as Jacob's soft voice whispered in the cab. What did Max need to do to fully reassure him that he was going to be okay?
It seemed that being there, next to the man was a good start. A reassuring gesture, it was supposed to be just that, as he took the man's hand in his own, shaking it gently. It reminded him of the hospital, when he was barely able to do such a simple gesture. He simply shook his head, not really knowing how he could answer without going into lengthy explanations that Jacob was the one who had the power in his hands, that he decided who could go in his house or not, if he wanted to keep and eye on him or not...
He felt like he could rest his head on Jacob's shoulder, and the man wouldn't complain. But he remained with his head back into the seat, looking at the eyes of the cab driver through the rear mirror. He knew he must have given them a few glances, and for once Max didn't feel like it could have bothered him. He was no longer covered in blood, he wasn't wounded, he didn't have a gun pointed at his head. All he was doing was holding a man's hand, and the world could believe whatever they wanted about it, he wouldn't give a damn.
After a while the cab parked in front of Jacob's place and Max walked out of the car. His leg was still not doing so well, and he felt like sitting right back down as soon as he placed weight on it while getting out the car. He showed no sign of bother however and would make his way up the stairs without any complaints if they headed up now. "You want to know how I found out where you lived? Turns out one of your neighbors had been harassing the PD for months now. The PD didn't do anything about it until the folder came on my desk. 'Often carries masks'? I came by to reassure your neighbor then left since it wasn't very hard for me to know who it was." he smiled slightly at the good memory, winking once at Jacob whenever their eyes met again.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Max did not answer his question, and Jacob did not push the topic further, instead, he felt the cop’s hand on his own, Max’s warm hand holding his in a reassuring way, it did made him feel a bit better, not enough to make him okay to be away from Max, but at least he knew the cop was fine for now. He figured Max would decide to stay or not when they arrived at his building, or that he had already made up his mind about leaving. At any rate, if Max decided he wanted to go home after all, Jacob would be glad to follow him, it would be a weird turn for the driver to come all the way to Jacob’s address before turning around and going to Max’s, but he doubted the man would complain about the extra money that would cost.
Jacob didn’t feel exactly tired, he felt more strung up and running on his emotions alone. Now that he was seated and more relaxed, he finally was started to feel the need to sleep, not urgent, more like a laziness that settled on his bones and made him want to lay down and close his eyes. Usually when not on a job, Jacob tried to go to bed quite early, never knowing when he’d need to stay awake the whole night for one reason or another, he had learned to always take advantage when he had time. Right now he could sleep, but he could stay awake all night if needed, it all depended on how Max would react.
Eventually the car stopped in front of the building, Max climbed out with no further word, which made Jacob smile contently. He turned to the driver and took out some of the money he had taken from White, paying for the ride and leaving quite the tip. He’d bet now the man would stop shooting Max and him weird looks, had he never seen two men be friendly and hold hands? People got weird for the smallest of things. He exited the car with no further word, approaching Max and then the building’s door. As he opened it, Max finally started talking, revealing how he discovered where Jacob lived.
If he was being honest, Jacob had thought Max had grown tired of the secret being kept and had dig up information on Jacob in case he ever needed. To hear that it had been somewhat of an accident brought by none other than his old neighbor actually made him feel a little bit better. “That bastard, making my life difficult! He’s convinced I’m a serial killer or something.” He felt so exasperated right now, what if it had been anyone else but Max. He opened the door and stepped inside, making way so Max could do the same before starting to climb the stairs towards his apartment on the third floor. “Is that why he stepped bothering me? Because you spoke to him? He’s like, a hundred years old, he should be dead already.” He had been tempted many times to help the old man with that, but that would be too suspicious.

Needing help to clean the mess Jacob's comment made him chuckle slightly. His emotions were starting to show a bit more, slowly regaining a face of many feelings rather than only two dark ones. He looked at Jacob with squinted eyes, a hint of playfulness there that hadn't been before. "Is he completely wrong though?" that old man had been right on some part about Jacob. He wasn't a serial killer but he did kill people as a job. And to be honest, Max was glad Jacob was not a serial killer. If he were just a low life thing, which kills by pulsion, need, lust and for no other reason that it made him reach the seventh's heaven, then the cop would have a hard time accepting their friendship. It was already hard to get over the fact that Jacob wasn't some nice boy, with a fascination for Masks and a hate of squirrels. He was what you needed to be in Chicago to survive once you reached the underground. Madden wondered who was his first ever kill and how did he feel after it.
As they climbed the stairs silently Max nodded at Jacob's questions. "I told him there was nothing to worry about. I believe I was able to convince him he had nothing to fear of you." talking about something as silly and actually rather mundane made Max gradually feel better. He kept his voice low so no one in the building would wake up. "I think it happened around...hmm December I think? It's been a while I barely remember now." he added, while climbing the stairs made itself a little more difficult. He was aware that he had started to grip the railing a little harsher than intended, making his knuckles white.
They however reached Jacob's level before he could show too much of his exhaustion, and no one seemed to have heard them yet. Madden felt vulnerable in this hallway, a place he just didn't know all so well with an old man who probably didn't forget his face. What if he started suspecting things about him as well? That he was Jacob's accomplice. It sure would explain a few things in that old man's eyes. If Max were at his home, all alone, he would have probably chosen to get drunk to knock himself out, stop thinking and just let time move faster. And even now at Jacob's place, he wished he could convince Jacob to let him do that. He knew the man won't allow it, so he didn't even question him for it. As he waited for Jacob to open the door he instinctively searched for his pills in his pockets. Simple painkillers, but efficient nonetheless. He forgot that everything was left in his car, parked near the mansion. His clothes still under the front seat. Max didn't want to ask Jacob for some pills, not wishing to force him to pull some out from his own stash. He believed that once they were seated inside the pain would go away.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- It was good to see Max slowly going back to normal. His emotions now in check as they talked about something rather mundane, even if the topic was aggravating for Jacob, it made Max laugh, and that sound alone gave Jacob some peace, and for a moment he truly believed everything would be fine. The banter felt light, the playfulness that filled the conversation was a welcomed shift. “No. He’s not even a little right.” His voice still carried exasperation, but he was playing up the offended feeling for the sake of playfulness. “I’m just an IT tech, I have no idea what are you talking about.” He knew the old man just had some details wrong, but was overall right, he thought Jacob killed random people, and the man no idea how deeply he was into this life, war paranoia and a bit of too much imagination made Jacob be seen not as a criminal, but a monster who could snap and attack everyone at the slightest provocation, as if he’d be stupid enough to call that much attention to himself.
Max acted as a good friend and Jacob had no idea. December was such a long time for him to discover his address, and he never mentioned to him or told Ruby, he felt touched by that revelation. And on top of that, the cop made Jacob’s biggest nuisance to back off, it was a great surprise. “Wow, I had no idea. I was starting to think the old man died in his house and no one noticed or something. Thank you, I mean it.” He said honestly, not only for talking with his neighbor, but also for respecting his boundaries until now.
They finished climbing the stairs, Jacob didn’t notice any discomfort coming from Max, he was more worried about the other’s emotional health, and wasn’t paying attention to any physical signs. He opened the door, stepping inside and leaving it open for Max to enter. Home sweet home. “Why you never told me about that? December is a pretty long time.” He asked while taking off his shoes. If he was being honest, he could make a safe guess and say Max didn’t want to make him angry, but Jacob hoped the cop knew him better than that, he wouldn’t really get furious over something this small, hurt perhaps, if it hadn’t been an accident, annoyed maybe, if he just barged in without any explanation, but his grumpiness would be over quickly.
Now Jacob was at a predicament, he was not used to have people at his house, he barely knew how to behave on these cases. It sounded so simple on his head, Max and he would talk, Jacob would comfort Max some more, and they’d be happy or something. Except he felt oddly awkward and unsure in a way that had nothing to do with what happened during the night. “Do you… want something?” he offered quite sure that was a thing people did, maybe.

Needing help to clean the mess A poor little IT tech who wore glasses and was the most shy person on earth. That image made Max laugh a little more. He shook his head in disbelief but did not add anything to it. His laughter remained on a nervous edge, using it as a device to keep himself together. He was with Jacob, not the police. The man knew what he had done and even saw it. So he couldn't bring himself to make Jacob feel guilt or worry for him when it was obvious he was doing his possible to make the cop feel better.
Max believed Jacob's thanks, sure that he meant it. He nodded in agreement, not finding any words to tell Jacob how much he counted to him, which explained why he did what he did. He thought a moment of what he could answer the man regarding why he didn't tell him until now. A part of him forgot, but the rest of him just believed it wasn't necessary. "I wanted to let you tell us where you lived. By yourself. I trust you, and I was waiting for you to trust us enough to tell us." of course he knew Jacob had some trust issues, but he didn't blame him. And the fact that he invited him in today was a nice way to close the case and make Max believe the merc trusted him as well. He shrugged, the hole ordeal being not of any big importance today. A home was a home, a personal space, a safe haven. He didn't want to violate the only place where, perhaps, Jacob feels the safest.
Once inside the house he looked around once more, able to see it in another light. He looked in the direction of what appeared to be the kitchen, knowing there must be a beer or two there somewhere. He would have kept his mind away from it if Jacob didn't ask if he wanted something the next second. He thought for a second, looking at the man before answering. "You got any beers? Don't let me get drunk but I think that one or two will do me some good." he would then go to sit on Jacob's couch, a loud sigh escaping his mouth. Stupid leg. His hands reached to the calf, holding it to massage it a little. He felt bad for simply going to sit on Jacob's couch without being invited to, but the pain had become more than he needed right now.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Trust, something that was so hard to come for Jacob, trust brought opportunities for the other person to take advantage of you, it put your own safety on someone else’s hands. A year ago he wouldn’t dream of doing something like that, and now here he was, feeling sad the Max could have doubts about Jacob’s trust on him. “I trust you, you know. I just never thought it was really that important. I like my corner.” He shrugged, thinking his explanation sounded rather weak. Now he made it look like he’d never reveal anything if Max hadn’t found it, and the worst part was that it could have been a real possibility. Jacob was really bad at being friends, he realized. “Sorry…??” not even that sounded honest, he should just give up.
It was funny, Jacob offered something and Max went straight to the alcohol. After what happened today he couldn’t really blame the man. He left for the kitchen, going to his fridge and took out a can of beer and a diet coke for himself. He went back and found Max massaging his calf, the same one that had been pierced open little more than a month ago. “Don’t you want to forgo the alcohol and take something for the pain instead?” He asked concerned, he had forgotten Max was not fully recovered from that leg, and he had climbed Jacob’s stairs twice that day. He’d leave the decision for Max, however, and would hand him the beer if he wanted.

Needing help to clean the mess "No I get it. That's probably why I didn't say anything earlier. It's because I get it. A home is your personal space. You should feel safe in it, and I know how even friends can be invading sometimes. I get it, really." that was what Max said after Jacob attempted to apologies for something that didn't even need an apology. To him, Jacob had all the right to be as secretive as he wanted, if only he didn't crack when Max pushed his curiosity too far.
Jacob came back with some beer and a can of coke, for himself Max presumed. After all the effort of keeping his pain hidden, Jacob had picked up on it when he did the most obvious. He should have known the merc wouldn't have forgotten a detail such as the wound of his leg. For a moment, after he spoke, he thought that his Bunny would take away the beer from him and give him a glass of water and pills instead. It wasn't what he wanted right now, but it was what he needed. He looked up at the man, dwelling with his choices before bending to what was needed. "You are right, I should ditch the beer for now. Glass of water and painkiller it is then." he said, wondering if Jacob even had that.
His eyes wandered around the house once more, this time looking for something in particular. The masks. "Hey where are all your masks? I imagined you to have a giant wall covered in them, but I don't see that." he said, raising his voice a little if Jacob wasn't in the room when he spoke. Whenever he'd come close enough and didn't have anything in his hands that may be spilled on the floor, Max would pull on the man's shirt or belt to make him sit, depending on which he could reach.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- So emphatic to reassure Jacob that it was no problem, it made him feel a little better, at least Max wasn’t thinking he lacked care or trust, that was the last thing he wanted. “Do you really get it? I think you weren’t very clear there.” He laughed in a teasingly manner, before he grew more serious. “But I mean it, I do trust you, and Ruby as well.” He just wanted to make that clear. It was Just he had a hard time expressing it, his life consisted of hiding everything about himself, from his face to his name, to his real self. It was hard to do a turn around and change habits.
For a moment he thought Max would make the bad choice and try to drown his pain with alcohol, Jacob wouldn’t exactly approve, but he wouldn’t complain, nor would he force Max to choose the painkillers. But after a brief consideration the cop picked the drugs. With a smile Jacob place his can of coke on the coffee table and went back to the kitchen and put the beer away before grabbing a glass of water for Max. He returned and handed him the glass, before quickly disappearing to the bathroom. He found his first aid kit, and took a not too strong painkiller, it should be enough to dull Max’s pain, but it wouldn’t make him drowsy or high.
On his way back to Max he heard the question about the masks. Did he really thought Jacob just kept his hundreds of masks on the walls? Staring and judging anyone who entered his house. “That’d be weird and look ugly. Too many things in a single wall. They are in my closet.” With the exception of the gas mask and the demon mask Max had given to him, those two were the special ones that always stayed on the shelf behind the couch. He handed Max the painkiller, and looked around, wondering if he should do something else for Max. He felt something tug on his belt, and fell on the couch in a sitting position with a small yelp. “What was that for?” He asked with a smile and a gentle glare, before raising again to grab the coke can from the coffee table, and made himself comfortable again, sitting close to Max in a similar manner they were doing in the cab.

Needing help to clean the mess Jacob said that he trusted both him and Ruby, and to Max that was good enough. He hadn't heard the man say it before, but from now on he shall trust him with a renewed eye. Before, he used to always be a little careful of how he trusted Jacob, how much he was ready to put between his hands. But the merc had proved countless times now that he was trustworthy, one of the rare people Max could trust so much along with Ruby. And even Ruby, with her constant tricks (even for fun) he had a harder time fully trusting her. He wanted to, he deeply did, but his instincts ordered him never to fully do so, never to become blind. "It's nice to know you trust us." he spoke, sincerity in his eyes.
As Jacob spoke about the masks, the cop did indeed notice two on the shelf behind the couch. The famous gas mask and, to his surprise, the Japanese mask the cop gave him for his birthday. He believed it must be true, that having a bunch of masks on one wall would be incredibly ugly unless you lived in a museum. And rather intimidating. Masks often showed special meanings and expressions that were meant to be scary or intimidating, and he believed most of Jacob's masks were exactly that way. He nodded an agreement to the man's statements. "You'll have to show me some time. I'm curious to see what other masks you own so I can always recognize you. Even without the hair." he ran a hand through his own hair, the feeling being remarkably enjoyable. It felt like he left a lot of his own brain heat escape at the movement, relieving his mind from a small headache.
As he forced Jacob to sit down he leaned back a little further into the couch, the man's words surprising him a little bit. He wasn't expecting to have to answer for that action, and so he looked at the man a moment. Having something alive next to him, with body heat and a beating heart, reminded him that he wasn't going to kill all the living because he killed one. He chuckled nervously, out of a pulsion before taking the glass of water on the coffee table, drinking down the painkiller pill, and drinking the rest of the water while at it. He hadn't realized how thirsty he had been, the liquid slid down his throat in a nice way. He still wished that a beer may have been nice as well. Heck, he still believed that he should be drinking himself drunk right now instead of joking around with Jacob.
The man leaned back into the couch, his head kicked back while the empty glass remained in his hand. Max wished he could control his impulsive actions more, so many of them had been the source of his problems, starting with agreeing to take drugs in New York. It's just for once, he said, it won't affect me he said. That's what the others said too, and he believed them. After questioning himself over and over during the past month, he still wasn't able to convince himself not to kill Jack White. A part of him believed he could have been able to lock him up, like a good PD officer. But the rest of him believed that there was no way he could have accomplished that. Lack of confidence, an issue he wished he didn't have to deal with.
Jacob was there, helping him out, telling him he trusted him, inviting him in his home, he saved him three times and still to this day Max couldn't bring himself to confess. Since when did he even need to? Since today, yesterday, the month before, the year before? Since when did he start to see the man differently, with no hint of joke or play? He couldn't tell, and he didn't look for a way to tell. He leaned his head on the man's shoulder, his eyes lost again, thinking of tonight and what happened, thinking of what tomorrow's weather will be and how he will manage to survive the rain...
