----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Vengeance felt good. Seeing the end of a man who hunted them like animals was sweet, even if Max had stolen Jacob’s chance to take vengeance with his own hands, it was still nice to see Jack’s mangled body sink into the depths of the ocean, never to be seen again. The two of them spent some time watching the car sink, the silence engulfing them wasn’t awkward or oppressive, it was just two men seeing the end of something, putting a nightmarish chapter of their lives behind them. The last bubble popped from the sea, before the water went to its usual calm, like nothing had happened, the ocean made for a good grave, especially for people who should be forgotten.
Now the only thing Jacob had to do was to deal with the aftermath. If it was just him, it’d be easy to just let it go, forget about this incident like many others, it didn’t affect him anymore. But Max was different, he cared too much, he had way too many morals, he was a good man who felt bad for killing even those who deserved it, and he killed a man in cold blood. His guilt must be overwhelming right now, in a way Jacob couldn’t possibly understand. For what felt like the tenth time today, Jacob wished he could reach out for a hug, attempt to smother the bad feelings away with his presence, but Max had left it clear that wasn’t what he wanted.
He took a good look at Max, who seemed to be still on edge and ready to break. He caught his haunted eyes once Max turned towards him. The man was strong, he usually was the one to be there for him and Ruby. That day when he was poisoned, Max was the one who supported them both. When Max was the one hospitalized, Jacob and Ruby almost broke down, Ruby was crying, and Jacob felt so stupidly possessive he almost pushed Ruby away when she also needed the most. He look back at the dark waters of the ocean, thinking what they should do now, leave Max alone was not an option, even If the cop asked him to. They also needed a way back home, without the car they’d need a cab, he doubted the subway was still working this late.
Jacob was cut from his thoughts when he felt arms wrap around him. The action so sudden and unexpected that he froze for a second, like he always did when Max initiated hugs. This time though, there was no further hesitation, he hugged back in the way he wanted so much this entire night, bringing Max down closer to his height, attempting to show all the support through that one action, engulf Max on his presence to hopefully make his doubts go away, the hug was filled with all his care, all the love he felt for Max. “You did the right thing.” He said with all the conviction he felt. “It doesn’t matter who those children are, it was either White or us. Don’t think for a second he’d just give up after all that happen. It was kill or be killed.” He meant every word, and part of him couldn’t really understand why Max felt bad for killing that man, but that was one of the differences between them that he had come to accept.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- This was become truly complicate. The girl knew how to fight, she was skilled and fast, but Jacob for once was the one with the size advantage, and as such stronger. He kicked himself from the floor, lifting himself in an attempt to make the girl lose balance and get off from him and using his hands to push her away.
He saw her attack with her fists, actually a punch this time. He managed to block her attacks, and used the knife to counter, aiming for her arm, That would probably slow her attacks down if it hit. He felt the cold metal of her blade on his throat, his first reaction was to try to slap her hand out of the way and counterattack with a headbutt. He needed the girl away from him and away from his box, he still rather not use a gun, but if he had to he wouldn’t hesitate.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- Jacob hoped from the depths of the withered blackhole he believed he had where his heart should be, that the contents of the box were worth it. He’d punch a rich snob in the face if it turned out to be another trap. This was way too much work for deceit. It crossed his mind that the Bianchi could have hired this girl to guard the box and make his life more difficult, but not even they could be that petty, right? It was more likely the box contained something precious that attracted all sorts of people to try to steal it, and they wanted to place it somewhere more secure.
His movements were fast, but apparently so was the girl. He felt her body collide with his in a well timed tackle that brought both of them to the ground. His instinctive reaction was to slice with the knife, aiming at anything he could reach. He saw she move her arm in what he thought was a punch and attempted to block with his off hand. It turned out to be her elbow and it still connected painfully, leaving him a bit dazed, but with less force than it would have, had he not reacted.
Dully he noted the girl was in fact wearing a mask, a beautiful black and white harlequin mask. Very feminine, so he wouldn’t wear it himself, but he certainly would have got it for his collection if he had the chance.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- The light diminished, and Jacob could finally take his first look at the person. Someone dressed to blend in the dark, covered from head to toe. Their face was obscured still, but Jacob could swear he could see a mask…? Maybe. If that was true, it could only mean the person had good character. No one who used masks could be a terrible person, it increased his odds of walking way with the box without a fight… Well, not really, but Jacob could dream.
His dreams were crushed as soon as the other spoke, the unmistakable voice of a woman as she said she wanted a box, the same box Jacob was after, he saw as soon as pointed, the description fit perfectly. Of course his life couldn’t be very easy. He lowered his gun, betting the woman wouldn’t want to shoot as much as him, and put it back on its holster, his movements slow and non-threatening “Oh, nevermind then. I’m afraid I can’t let you do that, I need that exact box.” At least he wouldn’t have to find it by himself in the dark. “Thank you for find it, thought” He’d smile at her if she could see his face. Immediately after he was done talking, Jacob dashed towards the box, hoping to grab it before the woman could. He still held his knife on his main hand, doubting she would just give up without a fight.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- The loud noise made everything tense, the silence that followed could almost be but by a sharp knife. Jacob held his breath, listening for any more noise, attentive for movements. He saw a figure a few meters away and apparently the figure saw him as well, because soon there was a blinding light shooting on his direction, he raised his arms to block it, squinting towards the light to try to make out who was here to ruin his day. That definitely was a gun pointed towards him, but his luck held so far that the person didn’t shoot. He couldn’t make much on appearance, but it didn’t look to be a guard.
Quickly taking advantage from the fact the figure didn’t attack him, Jacob lifted his gun, pointing towards the person, making an impasse. Another criminal, perhaps? Here? Today? He had the worst luck. “Listen friend, I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not call the security army here.” Maybe it was a reasonable criminal, maybe they weren’t here for the same reason as him. “I just want to grab a thing and leave, couldn’t we just stay out of each other’s way?” His voice wasn’t very loud, but the spacious warehouse made the sound echo around. The light was bothersome, not as bad as it first got to his face as his eyes adjusted to it, but if the person was hoping to make him half blind, they were doing an excellent job right now.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Max was right, as soon as Jack White was deemed dead for long enough, the power struggle to fill in his position would start. It was Jacob’s understanding that the man held a lot of power, he was sure there would be a lot of opportunistic bastards waiting a piece of the pie, he was glad that had nothing to do with that can of worms. But even then, his lackeys would spend some time looking for their boss “Well, that’s none of our business, they can kill each other off for all I care.” Or one of White’s children would take his place, who knows? The pictures Jacob saw when he went through his stuff at the charity ball could be old.
It seemed Jacob was wrong, Max went to the trunk with no further word, seemed not worried with the task. The trunk was opened to reveal the mangled body of White. He wasn’t sure what he expected, a clean bullet through the head? A slit throat? Something quick and lethal. But no, the wounds on the body were far worse, It looked like Max had used some sort of blade, the smell of blood was strong, but when he found Max in the slaughterhouse it had been far worse, Jack’s wounds were angry slashes, more than just meant to kill, it was like Max poured all his rage, frustration and pain into the man. Jacob tilted his head, taking a good look on the body, a small smile playing on his lips, he was of the opinion White looked good covered in his own blood.
Max added some stuff on the pile of things to burn, a knife, cigarettes of the fancy kind Jacob thought were a waste of money, a belt and a wallet. The last one he proceeded to look inside, throwing business cards, credit cards, White’s ID, and the picture with the two children onto the pile. There was also a few hundred dollars he felt no remorse in taking for himself. It wasn’t like he’d need it. Looking around the harbor, Jacob found two old beer bottles with some leftover alcohol. He poured it on top of the object, making sure to coat mostly the things that didn’t burn easily like the knife and belt. He took Jack’s lighter, flickered the flame and tossed it on top of the pile. The fire was quick to take hold, engulfing the alcohol and licking the leather and paper, destroying all the evidence in a few minutes. It was odd, it almost felt like a funeral of some sort, fire lit, destroying the identity of one man.
A few minutes later, when the fire was dying out and left mostly ashes and half burned things, Max closed the trunk with a sound of finality. Jacob backed off and the cop set a brick on the accelerator, the car falling into the darkness of the ocean, slowly sinking, and Jacob almost wanted to believe hell existed just so he would be sure White was still suffering somewhere. “I’m glad to help you, always.” He offered what he hoped was a reassuring smile as an answer to Max, even if he thought the cop wouldn’t offer back. The deed was done, Jack White was no more.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- Last time Jacob had been assigned a box, it turned out to be a bomb. He wasn’t too keen on getting into that warehouse right now, but he did what he must with only mild complaints and a few glares. The difference between then and now, was that instead of delivering the mysterious box to someone, Jacob had to fetch it. He had no idea what contained inside it, it could be another bomb, could be something valuable, could be something of no value the Bianchi wanted anyway. He hoped the first option wasn’t the case, but otherwise he didn’t care.
The night was cool, street lights and buildings rendering the cover of darkness almost useless. It wasn’t so late that that the streets started to empty, but nobody paid attention to the lone mercenary who roamed where he shouldn’t, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. This was actually the kind of job he was good at, slaughtering and bursting in guns blazing was fun from time to time, but Jacob’s strength always had been stealth. The clock struck twelve, and with it came shift change, or so he had been told, it was the opportunity Jacob had to slip in. He did just that, picking the lock open, he sneaked inside, taking the first look into the warehouse. It was big, as to be expected from such place. It wouldn’t be easy to locate the target, but he should have enough time if he kept quiet and didn’t alert the guards. His steps were silent as he searched around, his gloved hand adjusted the black and white mask on his face. Inside was dark, but not impossible to see, there was a movement from the corner of his eye, coming somewhere from the window and he turned quickly. There wasn’t supposed to be anyone here.
Cautiously he approached where he thought he saw the movement, silently hoping it was his imagination or some lost animal. His hand went to the knife he always carried, it would be counterproductive to shoot a gun right now. There was some sort of metal pipe loose on the ground, and Jacob kicked it away from him, making noise on the opposite direction from where he stood, not loud enough to attract too much attention, but enough to hopefully lure out whatever was here with him.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- It hurt to see Max flinch away from his touch, like there was a gap between them, and the cop wished to make it bigger and bigger the more he rejected Jacob’s touches. He knew this was hard on Max, killing a man to him was a terrible thing to do, and even if Jacob didn’t completely understood Max’s feelings on the subject, he knew why the cop was closing himself off so much. Jacob wanted to reach out and help, make everything better, but Max wouldn’t let him. He kept his hands to himself as they drove away, Max’s silence felt heavy, somber in a way Jacob wasn’t used to when around him, he wanted to say something, but didn’t know what, it was clear any jokes would only be met with a dull stare, Jacob would rather avoid that.
The talk kept being only about the task ahead of them, and even then, Max’s words were brief. Jacob kept shooting him worried glances each time he spoke. “The PD might not, but I’m sure his lackeys won’t give up easily. White was one of these rich man I wouldn’t be surprised they had a forensics specialist to help him hide evidence.” It was the skill Jacob lacked the most, he knew how to hide bodies and some tricks to fool Police forensics, but he was far from knowledgeable in the subject.
It didn’t take them too long to reach the harbor, but it still felt like hours in the mostly silent car. Max parked on the nearest safe spot, and the two of them climbed out, taking in the marine air. The harbor looked like it had stopped in time, it was the same as Jacob remembered from the last time he had been here, so much had changed for him though, he’d never dream of leaving Max for dead again, hoping he’d agonize and eventually die, that was all in the past. Now they were here as friends, working together to hide a body. Life took strange turns sometimes.
“Burn his stuff is a good idea.” He patted his pockets and took out a lighter “I can easily destroy paper, but anything else we’ll need something, like alcohol or gasoline.” He opened the car’s door to look inside the glove box for any documents or anything that needed to be destroyed, most things used to identification purposes should be with the body, but the car’s documents were there. He placed it on the driver’s seat, meaning to pile everything before starting the bonfire. “Do you have his stuff?” otherwise they’d had to search the body, which didn’t bother Jacob at all, but might bother Max.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- A cop car, Max’s personal car, a random car, Jacob could picture Max driving anything but the limo that was parked near his building. It was sleek, black, and expensive looking, something he could imagine the Bianchi owning. This could only be Jack White’s car, there was rich bastard written all over it. “So we have dispose of a car as well.” He said thoughtfully to Max, eyeing the lime suspiciously, like he expected White’s men jump out an ambush them. “Unless you thought it was a good idea to rent a lime to transport our cargo.” He tried joking, it was the only thing he could try right now to attempt to cheer Max up, but he didn’t know how successful it’d be.
Before Max could enter the car, Jacob tugged on his shoulder, stopping him from touching the vehicle any further. His hand went to one of his pockets, and from it he took out a pair of gloves. “Put these on, I’m sure you already left enough fingerprints on this car. We’ll have to clean it later.” He took a second pair of gloves for himself, and with that, allowed Max to get on the driver’s seat, making his way around the car to take the passenger’s seat.
The car was started, and they sped away from Jacob’s building. He really hoped no one noticed such a suspicious car parked so close to where he lived. It was unlikely anyone would associate a limo with him here, but being paranoid had saved Jacob’s life more than once. Max’s question gave him pause, so he had idea where they were going, where would be a good place to hide a body be? They could bury it somewhere no one went to, but all it was needed was a bit of bad luck for someone to find it, they probably didn’t even have shovels, and the car was also going to be a problem, Jacob would bet it had some kind of tracking. The other option would be water. “We can dump it on the sea, the water will mess up the time of death and make more difficult for forensics get many details. That is if they find it, because it’s very likely no one ever will. We could just drop him, car and everything. It’d sink.” It sounded like a solid plan in his head, Jacob shot Max a look to see if he’d disagree with anything.
He was still worried about Max, the cop wasn’t acting like himself, it was like he was bursting on the seams, barely keeping himself together, the slightest push would bring Max to the edge, and that was the last thing Jacob wanted. He thought for a bit about where it’d be a good place to do what was needed, somewhere there weren’t any people, no chance for them to be found out, a place near the sea that was restricted would work best. “The bombed harbor.” He spoke up suddenly as the idea struck him. “We should take it there.”

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- When he peeked inside the bathroom, Jacob caught a glimpse of Max’s naked back. So many scars, still angry looking, and quite fresh, but even with time Jacob was sure they wouldn’t fade completely. Rage filled him, at himself, at the criminals who did this, at White. This was entirely Jacob’s fault, he brought Jack White’s wrath upon Max, he was the one who failed to kill that man, and Max was the one who paid the price. Jacob got poisoned, true, almost died even, but it didn’t compare with being tortured. The anger vanished as soon as it appeared, leaving behind a feeling of deep guilt, the worried frown he already had getting more pronounced.
Max turned around, and Jacob got an eyeful of the J&R scar on his chest, freshly cut by those dead bastards, like tainting it with their presence, even if the brand was not something pure in the first place. He never regretted giving Max that mark as much as now the worst part was that even if it was going to fade with time before, Jacob was pretty sure now it wouldn’t. At least, his eyes reached Max’s face, cleaning up the blood seemed like it did some good to him, his eyes had softened, and Max didn’t look about to commit murder again. Jacob took half a step, the urge to wrap his arms around Max again was strong, but he stopped himself mid action, arms half reaching, thinking Max wouldn’t want that. Instead, he handed the shirt wordlessly.
Nothing was said to the fact Jacob had one of Max’s shirt in his possession, but Jacob noticed the way he fiddled with the fabric, almost like in recognition. Once Max spoke, his voice was much stronger than before, more sure of himself, and he finally met Jacob’s eyes, who just nodded once and walked back to the living room. He already had his gun with him, as well as his knife, he just needed to grab his keys. “Let’s go.” He said once he was ready, opening the door for Max to exit. He’d wait for the cop to go ahead of him, before locking his door and following. “Where is the car parked?” he asked once they were on their way outside.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood --- It’s all good, Jacob wanted to believe those words so bad. Max was out of danger, Ruby was not crying anymore, Jacob wasn’t feeling helpless, everything was fine for now. He could breathe a sigh of relief, he no longer needed to pretend to be strong. Ruby put her hand on top of his and Max’s, like she was finishing their link, the three of them, standing tall after a hellish night, hurt and shaken, but all of them alive. On the back of his mind there was the nagging thought that White still walked free, unpunished for all the horrors he made them go through, lurking on the shadows, a dangerous shark who would slaughter the three of them on the first opportunity. But they had each other, and somehow that thought felt reassuring to him.
Max was so weak, his voice was almost intelligible when he spoke, and he didn’t seem to notice how Ruby and he avoided giving a proper answer to his question. Maybe it was for the best, he had no doubts that eventually Max would know the truth, if not from them, from the police once they found the bodies, but for now Max could focus on getting better. It was still a bit odd to see Ruby being so gentle and caring, it was rare to see her this way, and it hardly happened when he was around. She had been kind enough to get him breakfast, and now she seemed determined to feed Max as well. It was all very nice and domestic, it made Jacob fell warm inside. He kept eating his pastry in silence, glad to just observe Max and Ruby interact, it brought peace to his mind, and even the coffee couldn’t help the drowsiness he felt, or maybe it just hadn’t have time to work yet.
Max was hard to kill, indeed, especially with two overprotective criminals ready to stab the whole world to save him. Jacob suspected he would keep worrying too much for a while after this, and he wouldn’t be surprised if Ruby felt the same way. He didn’t say anything at first to Max’s grateful words, letting Ruby speak to him instead while he finished his breakfast. But after a few moments, it was clear she wasn’t going to say anything either. “We’d do it a hundred times if needed.” He said with a smile, putting the empty coffee cup on the nightstand and leaning back on the uncomfortable chair. Jacob let out a yawn, still feeling tired, and took a minute to answer Ruby’s questions. “It was great, thank you for getting it. But aren’t you going to eat?” he asked, noticing now she had only brought two pastries, not even a coffee for herself.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Max ignored all of Jacob’s questions, and he also made no movement to return the hug. So maybe questions and physical contact were not the way to make things better. He waited for a few moments, give time for Max to reciprocate, but the man only grabbed his shirt’s collar, hardly an affectionate touch. He wondered why Max hadn’t gone to Ruby instead, she knew better than him what to do in these situations, or at least that was what he thought. Max and Ruby were close in a way Jacob was not. Max had not pushed him away, but Jacob backed off anyway, fumbling with his arms awkwardly for a bit, unsure what he could do.
Help, so that was why Max came to him first, though he could argue Ruby would still be a better pick, most of the time Jacob didn’t bother to hide his bodies. He would do anything at that moment to help Max, however, he wished the cop had come to him earlier, so he would be the one doing the killing, perhaps then, Max wouldn’t be on the edge of breaking like this. It surprised him that Max would bring the body with him, and Jacob truly hoped it wasn’t on the cop’s car, that would leave way too much evidence if anyone bothered to look. “Oh…” was all he said for a moment, but soon he ready to act, a look of determination on his face. “Of course I’ll help you, c’mon, the quicker we start, the quicker we can be done.” He got up, offering his hand to Max, noticing the odd clothes the man was wearing for the first time. Even under all the blood, he was sure it was nothing like Max’s usual outfits. “You’ll need to change though. We can’t go cruising around Chicago with a body in the trunk and you covered in blood.” That would be asking for trouble, even late at night and almost no one outside, it’d be too risky.
“You can go wash yourself over there” He pointed to his right towards the bathroom “Don’t worry about bloodstains, I know how to get those off.” He reassured Max, before going to his bedroom to try to find something for Max to wear. Hardly any of Jacob’s clothes would fit Max properly, the cop was a good few centimeters taller, and also more muscular. He ruffled through his things, until he came across something he didn’t even remember he had, one of Max’s shirts, the one he had borrowed when they went shooting criminals and Jacob got hurt, this was a good time as any for him to give it back. There was nothing he could do about the pants, but from inside the car no one but him would see those anyway.
With a sense of purpose, Jacob didn’t feel so uncertain anymore, if helping Max hide a body was what it took to make things a little bit better, Jacob would do it without complaints. He got changed and thought if he should grab a mask as well, but it was just Max, he didn’t really need it. He went look for the cop then, shirt in hand, uncertain if the cop had done as he had asked. “Max? Got a shirt for you” he called out, peeking inside the bathroom

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Max and blood, the sight of these two together brought bad memories Jacob would rather forget, there was an initial panic in seeing the state of his friend, but Max didn’t look hurt, murderous and shaken seemed to be a more apt description. Max followed him inside the house without any protests, and for a moment, he watched as the cop took in the appearance of his apartment, Jacob thought there wasn’t much to look at, small, almost no decoration, very clean, but Max looked around curiously, almost hesitant to touch anything. He supposed it had been some sort of secret until now, even though that wasn’t Jacob’s intention.
He waited in silence as Max took everything in, observing the man worriedly, maybe he wasn’t hurt, but Max was certainly acting odd, not a single word had come from him since he arrived. Max’s hard blue eyes turned to Jacob, a look he was very familiar with, had seem many times on the mirror, what had Max done? The steely eyes seemed to almost soften once they stared at him, like snapping out of a trance. Jacob tried his best to silently reassure Max with just his eyes, but he didn’t want to push for the cop to talk, Max seemed to need to gather himself first.
Eventually he spoke, and deep down Jacob expected what he heard, or at least part of it, the killing part. “Jack… White?” He said in almost disbelief, Max had killed Jack White? How? Jacob was shocked, he had tried so hard to find that man, and Max went and did what Jacob couldn’t. “Wha- how did y- what?” he cut himself off, unsure of what he even wanted to say. Jack White was dead, all the hours he spent trying to pin him down and clues to find the man were useless now, and it was a shame Jacob wasn’t there to see the life of that slimy man end, but this nightmare was finally over, no one else was after the three of them, once the realization hit, it was like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
But Max wasn’t taking it too well, Max was a good man, so opposed to killing, had a weird urge to help everyone, and now he choose to take someone’s life, Jacob had no idea how he felt, to him it was as simple as breathing, he felt no remorse for strangers, he could barely understand what was so bad about ending the life of a vile man who hurt them so terribly, Max should be happy, proud of himself that he ended White’s reign of terror, and yet, he was kneeling on the ground, looking like he was about to cry. Jacob knew Max wasn’t like him and Ruby, killing for him was hard, only done in self-defense, guilt was probably what he was feeling right now.
Jacob knelt beside him, hovering over the crumbling man unsure how he was supposed to comfort him, but wanting to anyway. He didn’t know what to say, so he wrapped his arms around Max, that was thing people did, right? Give hugs to make others feel better. This was probably the first time Jacob initiated a hug with Max, but he just wanted to make things good again, tell him he did the right thing, but that probably would make things worse, even if Jacob truly believed it. “Do you… want to talk about it?” he asked softly, unsure.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- The silence in the apartment was comforting. Jacob was dozing off on his couch, and he probably should go to bed, but it was so comfortable he didn’t want to move. A peaceful night, in which he could forget his problems, if just for a moment. The thing he liked about his house, it was that he could always retreat to it at the end of the day, his little corner that stayed undisturbed by anyone because of Jacob’s sheer stubbornness of sharing the address. Sometimes it crossed his mind that he should give this address to Max and Ruby as a sign of trust, once or twice he almost did it, since he did know where each of them lived, but he honestly didn’t want to. It wasn’t a matter of trust, because he trusted the two with his life, he just like to have a place he could hide away from time to time, he always convinced himself that they already had Ruby’s and Max’s apartment to hang out, they didn’t really need his as well, neither of then pushed the subject, and to him that was a sign that they didn’t mind it.
That is not to say he didn’t have visitors sometimes, nosy neighbors were the most common, but estranged family also happened from time to time, but those were far in between. There was also the annoying navy old man who thought he was a serial killer, but strangely enough, he hadn’t heard much of him lately, hopefully he got bored of bothering the police with accusation he couldn’t prove, or maybe he died and no one noticed and was rotting in his own apartment, that’d be nice too.
At some point, he must have dozed off, because next thing he knew, there was a forceful knock on his door that made him startle awake, his hand going to his knife on instinct. He took a look at his phone, seeing it was already pretty late, a strange hour for anyone to be knocking on his door, it put Jacob on high alert immediately. He got up from the couch, grabbing the nearest gun that was inside a nearby drawer, and cautiously approached the front door, his steps making no noise.
He paused a bit, trying to listen for any movement from the other side, before undoing the two locks, and peeking outside, the chain lock still in place so the door couldn’t be forcefully open, the gun on his hand hidden by the door, ready to shoot anyone who meant harm, although he’d like to avoid that. Jacob wasn’t sure who or what he expected, an enemy, a neighbor, a bomb on his doorstep, he could tell you, however that he didn’t expect a bloodied Max. “Max?” was all he said, surprise clear on his voice. He closed the door again, put away his gun and undid the chain to open the door more widely.
Max looked like a mess, dried blood splattered everywhere, a murderous look on his face that reminded Jacob of that day on the abandoned theme park, when he thought he was going to be killed by the cop’s hand. He half expected Max to be wielding that American baseball bat and attack him again. “Are you okay? What happened?” There was so much blood on the man, was it any of his? He couldn’t hide the worry creeping on his voice, he had no idea how Max found where he lived, but at that moment he didn’t really care to know how Max got here, but why. There was noise from one of the neighbor’s door, and Jacob realized there was a bloodied Max on his doorstep, looking ready to slash someone’s throat, if everyone didn’t think he was a serial killer until now, they’d certainly start if they saw Max. He put a hand on Max’s shoulder, gently pulling the cop inside the house.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Jack White was an such elusive man, hard to find and hard to pin down. Jacob had tried a lot since Max had gotten out of the hospital, but between his work with the Bianchi family, his clients on the side, and the amount of time he spent around Max and Ruby, he still hadn’t been able to locate the man. What he did found was that White wasn’t simply a rich crook who went around hunting for assassins and torturing cops for fun, he actually had a pretty vast underground empire, and Jacob felt like a fool for having never heard of such a man until this particular contract that screwed everything. Somehow knowing that White wasn’t a random small criminal made him feel a little bit better for losing against him in such an embarrassing way. that day. Just a bit though.
He could’ve asked Ruby and Max for help, that was true, he was sure they’d be eager to find where White was and get payback as much as him, but this was a problem that started because Jacob had called for help in the first place, he wouldn’t make that mistake twice, it was better for everyone if this just stayed his personal revenge plan, no involvement from anyone else. If only the target would show up... He could understand now why the person who assigned him this assassination job was so particular in the details of the plan, although he thought it was a fatal oversight to leave out the fact that Jack White was not a simple civilian who got involved with the wrong people, Jacob underestimating the target was what made this such a complicated thing.
This particular day, however, had been filled with odd jobs and minor tasks that were easy but so time consuming and tiring, Jacob had no opportunity to even attempt to continue his Jack White search, by the time he got back home it was already dark outside, so even if he started, he was sure he wasn’t going to get too far anyway, so he took the opportunity to just relax tonight, take a break for work or worries, grab a diet coke and just wait until the next day before resuming any tasks. His apartment was dark, the soft light from the TV was the only thing illuminating him, and also the only sound that could be heard. He wasn’t even paying much attention to whatever movie was being shown, it was just background while he thought about how to find Jack White and how nice it’d be once he managed kill him.
