----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Oh Max was talking about him. The person he cared as much as Ruby was him, there was no denial. He didn’t even know what to think at this point, he cared deeply for both of them, so he could understand where Max was coming from. He had no idea who these people he was talking about were, there was the talk about Max’s former drug habit that he accidentally overheard, He remembered he mentioned a sister who seemed very important to him, but beside that, else Jacob didn’t really know all that much about Max past before coming to Chicago. The point was, Max considered Jacob to be one of his important people, and although logically he already knew that, it was reassuring to hear it right now, when everything seemed to be some sort of lie. “I matters, Max, way too much. I don’t know what you think of me, but I’m not actually emotionless.” As much as he tried. He would like if that was true though, no emotions would probably be easier to deal with.
He thought they were done fighting, he thought they were both too tired to keep yelling and pacing, but not Max apparently. Jacob almost jumped back when Max approached him, but the cop’s hands on his shirt stopped any evasive action. There was a fire in Max’s eyes, it wasn’t exactly anger, but it might be very well mistaken by it. Jacob reflexively grabbed Max’s wrists, his eyes widening in surprise, both at the action and the words that followed. So the bottom line was what? Max loved both Jacob and Ruby? And he screwed up with Ruby and now… wanted to try his luck with Jacob? It was a better thought than being the poor substitute. But why couldn’t he make her happy? They were happy before, what changed? There were so many questions, but he had been struck speechless, the sincerity of Max’s words hitting him like a baseball bat to the head.
And Max kept speaking, spilling his feelings on Jacob, and he didn’t know what to do with all that. He wanted to say that yes, he’d like Max’s care and protection, and even opened his mouth to say something, but no sound escaped. There was a wave of fear that washed over him, what if he said yes and everything got worse? What if Max didn’t really meant it in the end? What if he changed his mind once he talked to Ruby? What if he decided Jacob wasn’t worth it once he figured out how bad he was at the feelings thing? So many things could go wrong, he didn’t want to open himself, make himself vulnerable and lose everything, he was scared, so terrified to answer the minutes crawled by and he stayed silent.
He got up from the couch and started pacing again. All the emotions he thought were drained away, came back at full force, except this time fear was the strongest, and not anger. “I- I ca-” He closed his mouth, he needed to gather his composure before speaking, but that seemed impossible at the current situation. “I’ve… I’ve never lo-… liked anyone, y’know. I didn’t think I could.” That was a start, even if it was difficult to look at Max, so he fixed his eyes in one of the walls. “Turns out I can, and it sucks. Why do you people do this?” he shot one tiny glace at Max before turning away once again, crossings his arms and thinking carefully about what exactly he wanted to say. “I don’t… know what I’m doing. And… and I think you should go talk to Ruby before deciding anything…” Oh look at him, pushing Max to Ruby again, but what if it wasn’t something that could be fixed? He didn’t even know how Ruby was feeling about all this, awful, probably. But, what if… what if he did what he wanted? Just this time… just once… “But...” Another pause as he took a deep breath, gathering his courage. “I do want it… Your care and protection, I mean.”

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- There Max went, making things complicated again. You can’t ask me to do the same, like there was another option and Jacob was just being too stubborn to see it. Like Jacob was the one being unreasonable. He didn’t need to hear words or know of tittles between those two, it was clear to anyone who spent any amount of time around them the love they felt, perhaps they didn’t even noticed, but Jacob did. It was in the care Ruby rarely showed anyone, the touches and fond looks they shared, the distress Ruby felt when Max was at that hospital bed fighting for his life, to Jacob it was clear they were a couple in everything but name. “It doesn’t matter if you want to name it or not, your actions speak for yourselves. Or you’ll tell me there are other people you treat the same way as Ruby? With whom you care, protect and kiss the same way as her?” He very much doubted it.
It wasn’t even that he thought he didn’t matter, but Jacob had made it clear at the beginning that he wanted nothing to do with couples and feelings, at the time he didn’t think he could. He was wrong, and by the time he realized that, it was too late, Max and Ruby were already happy with each other and he’d never try to ruin that. He was happy with that, he had the two as friends, he didn’t need anything else, but then Ruby kissed him, and now Max kissed him, like tempting him with what he couldn’t have, or to just mess with his heart. “Not gonna lie, it really feels like you did want to mess with me.” His voice was still eerily calm. “But let’s say you mean what you’re saying. What then? You say what I want matters, but how so? What do you propose we do, Max?” Because Jacob couldn’t see a way to choose without hurting one of them, and he’d rather it be him than be the cause of one heartbreak over another for Ruby.
The anger had been almost completely drained from the room. Both man tired of screaming and fighting, because what was the point? This was a messed up situation and he saw no way of fixing it. Contraire to popular belief, Jacob was not a therapist who could save everyone with a few well-chosen words. He may be the one who thought everything through to try to solve problems but he wasn’t that good at solving his own issues. “What?” Max question was sudden and confusing, like a lot of things happening today. “I don’t… know? Because I care? Why are asking me this now?” he could argue that right path was relative, and he didn’t really strive for that since he didn’t consider himself to be on the right path in the first place. To him, it was more like he was pulling Max from the right path. He had just killed a man for him! How was that keeping on the right path? But he was more concerned with understanding Max’s point than discuss what was right and wrong.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- His was one ball of emotion. There were too many to name all, but it included anger, confusion, sadness, hurt. He had never felt so many things at the same time, it was overwhelming, he didn’t know how to redirect it or how to express everything besides by pacing and yelling, his fists closed so tightly his knuckles went white, his face showing more emotion than he’d like. It wasn’t enough, he felt like he’d burst at any moment. He wanted to tackle Max, stab and see blood, that was how he dealt with everything that upset him, he tried to stab everything into submission. But that wouldn’t work here, it wasn’t something that he could make better by killing, Jacob had no idea how to deal with it.
Max insisted so much about his feelings. That what he was saying was the truth. That he loved Jacob and would kiss him all over again if he was given the choice. Jacob really wanted to believe it, but it was hard to when all he could think about was how it looked like he was being the poor substitute, Max was spitting out words of love, but wouldn’t he take everything back if Ruby arrived right now saying she forgave him? The bottom line was Jacob believed Max meant what he was saying, but he didn’t believed it mattered if he was second best.
Was there even a way to fix this? Jacob certainly couldn’t see it. He had noticed Ruby had been acting a little odd, he never could pinpoint exactly what it was, but she wasn’t being herself. He never pushed for answer, he never did when people seemed to not want to talk about it, but now it was clear that had been a mistake, how much was she hurting and he had no idea? He was such an useless friend, always the last to discover anything important that happened between Max and Ruby. “I don’t know how to fix this either. I don-… I don’t even know how to deal with this, much less fix anything. I don’t know what you want me to say.” He had stopped pacing, and now just watched as Max started instead, arms crossed, shoulders hunched, his eyes still reflecting anger and hurt.
That crack on Max’s voice, like he was about to start crying at any moment, Jacob hated how it made him want to reach to him, hug everything away in similar way that he felt when Max had arrived earlier. His anger drained out, or maybe he had reached his limit and his brain shut down his emotion once he couldn’t deal with them anymore. He felt suddenly exhausted, emotionally empty. He sat down with a heavy sigh, his hands going to his face and running through his hair as curled up and staid like that for a minute or two. “I don’t want it to mean nothing, to forget and pretend everything is fine, but I can’t do that to Ruby.” his voice came muffled, and he lifted his head to stare at Max once again, unknowingly his hair becoming as much of a mess as he felt. “So that’s exactly what we’ll do.” It wasn’t a question, but a simple fact. When had he started considering other’s people’s happiness on more important than his? That was new.
And Max finally figured out he couldn’t protect everyone, the same way Jacob couldn’t, nor Ruby, but they tried anyway, because it was the only thing they could do, it didn’t mean they’d go as far as pushing people away, because what was the point of caring if he had to give the person up?. He gave humorless laugh, his voice sounding as empty as he felt. “Maybe we’d be dead, maybe not…” he leaned back, his eyes never leaving Max. “A bit too late to figure that out, don’t you think?”

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Max reacted like a kicked dog who knew exactly what they were being scolded for, but tried to look pathetic to evoke sympathy anyway. Jacob’s anger felt like it was going to burst, a mix of protectiveness for Ruby who didn’t deserve that kind of treatment, and his own feelings of betrayal and confusion that were now plaguing his mind. He legitimately couldn’t understand Max’s train of thought, one second he wanted to leave everything they had built over nothing, claiming it was for Jacob’s own protection, from what, he had no idea, it sounded like a weak excuse to him. But then Max suddenly changed his mind and wanted to confess his undying love to him now that Ruby was conveniently unavailable, nevermind that up until now his affections had all being for her.
And Max had the nerve to say this was Jacob’s fault. He knew he was guilty for many things: Bringing Ruby and Max into the Jack White situation, being a hypocrite who couldn’t keep his promises, among other things it wasn’t worth mentioning. But he certainly wasn’t the cause of this fight, or the cause for Max wanting to abandon them. “Don’t make this my fault! You are the one who stayed! I just didn’t want you to do something stupid like leave forever because you killed a man. And then YOU KISSED ME!” He still wasn’t over that, his panic for his own feelings who weren’t welcomed was mixing with the anger and betrayal he felt for Max’s actions.
It was hilariously ironic that he was feeling betrayed, Jacob Pierce, who couldn’t be loyal to anyone, who killed the people he cared about to save his own skin, was mad because he felt Max used him. Max said it wasn’t the case, but he was too angry to believe anything. “Again with this safety talk. You CAN’T keep us safe, we weren’t safe when we met, and losing everything I care about doesn’t make it safer. It just make want to give up, BECAUSE WHAT’S THE FUCKING POINT? What’s the point of trying if when I get something…. Someone who is important to me they go away.” He didn’t care there were neighbors who probably were witnessing his breakdown and hearing every screamed word, nothing mattered when he was seeing his life crumble with a few words.
And again Max used the word love, what kind of love was that if he was just using it to hurt everyone? Jacob couldn’t answer back, and certainly wouldn’t start using that word now, because admitting anything would just make him more vulnerable, so he stayed silent, and Max continued to talk, and his anger was momentarily replaced by confusion. “I… What? What do think I could possibly do? Tell Ruby you didn’t mean it? Tell her to go back to how it was and pretend nothing happened and forget about the heartbreak? And what about me, Max? Does my feelings even count into this or if you and her just make peace then everything is fixed and we’ll forget about these so called love you claim to have for me?”

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- The way Max looked away from his question, his gaze losing all the intensity, it told Jacob there was something wrong. He narrowed his eyes, silently waiting for Max start speaking. Things weren’t ever simple with them, their friendship started from an accidental mess, it grew and shifted for all of them. For moments it became easier, they could almost forget they all worked for different sides, but it always came crashing down at some point, and he felt whatever happened today, things would change once again. Jacob was scared to think it would be for the worst, that they could do irreparable damage to what they had, and for a moment he was wished Max wouldn’t say anything, that they could pretend everything was fine. But they were already to a point of no return, things had already changed the moment Max decided to kiss him.
As Max spoke, he wasn’t surprised to hear he knew what he and Ruby had done at the slaughterhouse, it was bound to happen since he and Ruby never bothered to clean up the mess. He still said nothing as Max kept speaking, witch word his frown got more pronounced. It was so similar to what Max had almost done today, pushed him away with excuses of wanting to protect. Wrong…. If that was really the word he used… Did Max not think about her feelings? How could he say something so cruel to Ruby? Discarding her after everything they had gone through, like all the times they stood up for each other was nothing, rendering all the times they saved each other meaningless. He clenched his fist, anger boiling inside him, his jaw set as his soft look turned into a glare the more Max talked. Of course she didn’t take that well, he wanted to yell and rage, shake some sense into Max, but what for?
He let out a humorless laugh as Max finished, yeah right, didn’t want to hurt her, except he did the most sure thing to ensure that would happen. “And how did that go?” He asked harshly, his anger bleeding through as he tried no to get up and punch Max here and now. It had been months since he had been truly mad at Max, grumpy and annoyed were his default, but true anger came rarely now days. Was that why the cop had come to him instead? Because Max had burned his bridges with Ruby, so Jacob was the next best thing. Max didn’t have Ruby’s company anymore, so he’d take Jacob’s instead. That hurt, like his own knife ripping into his heart. Did Max even mean what he had just said? Did he really grow to like Jacob or was he just feeling lonely and Jacob was conveniently there?
He knew something like this would happen eventually, there was a reason he never let himself get close to people, there was reason he didn’t allowed himself to care about people too much, and this was exactly it, everything came crashing down at some point, and he was left alone again to deal with the aftermath. He got up from the couch, pacing around the living room in distress, his anger looking for any outlet as he did his best to control himself and not punch Max. “Why are you even here, Max? I helped you with White, you told me the same bullshit excuse about protecting by leaving, except you didn’t leave! Why not!?” He was yelling at this point, unable to stay still. “If you want to be all alone, why did you came here in the first place?! Did you just break her heart and felt bad, but it was too late, so you came to me instead!” He turned to Max, stepping aggressively towards the cop. “What were you even trying to do here? With that ki-…” He cut himself off and stepped back, if he stayed this close to Max he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from hurting Max, and even with all his anger, he didn’t want that.

---- In the middle ----- --- Of a jelly sandwich --- Jacob kept shifting his eyes from Ruby and Natalie, unsure of what was going on right now. They seemed polite enough with each other, exchanging handshakes, and more weirdly, compliments. He wondered if there wasn’t some sort of insult between the lines that went flying over his head. But he couldn’t really complain or call any of the two out, because neither of them were being outwardly hostile, there was just this tension permeating the air that could be cut with a knife if Jacob bothered to try. Even his meaningless stalker comment caused tension, and in retrospect, he now realized how that could have sounded to Ruby. “It’s crazy, and definitely not what’s happening.” He shot a look at Ruby, trying to tell her everything was fine with just his eyes.
But by sheer determination, Jacob wanted to keep things friendly, and for a moment he thought he was accomplishing something when Ruby commented on his mask. “We can kill more critters and it’ll be less sappy if that’s a problem.” He said with a chuckle before turning back to Natalie.
At first he wasn’t sure how to react, he shot a look at Ruby to gauge her reaction. Should he push things and try to make them a little friendlier? or should he spare everyone the drama and just dismiss Natalie? That sounded a bit mean to her, she was a fun acquaintance, why did Ruby dislike her so much? They could share murder tales or something like that. “Uhhh… I’m not sure what we were going to do…?” He glanced at Ruby, as if asking her whet they were doing. “I’m sure we can spare a few moments for a coffee, though… right Ruby? C’mom, it could be fun.” He pushed his mask up so Ruby would see his hopeful smile.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- As expected, Max backed off as soon as he saw how serious Jacob looked. Sitting back at the couch wordlessly. He felt cold with Max no longer close to him, like the room had suddenly dropped several degrees for no reason. Part of him wanted to reach again and resume what they were doing, but this couldn’t go on like this, without him knowing what everything meant, without him knowing if this was just a meaningless slip that would be remembered in shame or if it was the start of something else.
It felt like they stared at each other for an eternity, until Max spoke and it wasn’t what Jacob thought. More than a friend, he said, word so direct, so clear, there was no way for him to interpret it wrong. Jacob widened his eyes, his heart that was starting to slow down, picking up speed once more. He stared unbelieving at Max’s eyes, looking for any sign that this was a joke, or maybe a lie to make Jacob feel better. He had never seem Max look so serious, his gaze so intense, Jacob couldn’t help but turn his eyes away, running his hands over his eyes, a distressed sound coming from him caused by a mix of panic and joy. What was he supposed to do with a confession like that? It was what he wanted to hear, but at the same time it wasn’t. It’d be so easy so just accept it, crawl back to Max and kiss him again, but there was one glaring problem with that decision. “What about Ruby?” His words sounded strained as he tried to hold back his turbulent emotions, but that seemed like an impossible task, he wished he had a mask right now, maybe then it’d be easier to look at Max without the fear he would read Jacob like an open book. Ruby was the root of the problem, wasn’t she? As terrible as that sounded. He had promised Max that he wouldn’t stand in the middle of them, and now Max himself was the one making things complicated by throwing a confession like that at him. Couldn’t he left Jacob to pine in silent while he went to be happy with Ruby? It was such a simpler solution. It was distressing to think that she would be hurt because of him, like he was stealing her happiness right from her hands, he couldn’t do that.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- And they did not stop, both fully aware they should, but even that knowledge was not enough. To feel this close to someone, give in to what he wanted. Every kiss and every touch make him want more. Desire was not something Jacob was very familiar with, an alien concept that had eluded him until he met Max and Ruby, not for a moment he questioned the fact that Max was a man, to him Max was Max, his cop, the man he got too close to and now felt the need to protect from everyone who wished him harm. Kissing Max was certainly different from kissing Ruby, she was softer and like to tease, while Max felt more rough, was stronger than him but his touch more… hesitant, as if Jacob could bolt at any moment. The point being, Ruby was the only one he could compare Max to, since the times before that there was not much will on his part.
He didn’t know what made Max chuckle, but the sound made Jacob smile. As he was expecting, his words didn’t discourage Max, Jacob felt himself fall back, willingly letting Max push him into a more comfortable position. He kept one hand on the cop’s back, caressing lightly thought the cloth, his mind going to the scars that would forever be there as a cruel reminder of what they went through. But this was no time for dwelling on those unpleasant memories. He felt Max’s hand trail to the edge of his pants, the action making him tense up, opening his eyes, suddenly unsure if he’d want to proceed, but Max didn’t go any further, and he relaxed, his lips seeking Max’s once again in a slow kiss, Max’s whisper feeling like a tender caress.
So maybe he was not as willing to go as far as he first thought, take things too fast and he backed off. The truth was that Jacob could kiss and make out, but he had little experience with anything beyond that, wasn’t even sure how to proceed. He’d like to have the chance to figure things out with Max, even talk about their feelings, kiss him again, be with him. But there was a real possibility that this was a one time thing, a slip up brought by how shaken this whole situation had left Max, Ruby wasn’t here and Jacob was a convenient third wheel, so why not? That thought hurt, thought, it almost made him out to be a poor replacement, and although Max never said or did anything that implied such thing, once the thought invaded his mind it wouldn’t let go. Why would Max chose him if he already had someone, it’d fizz out the same way it did with Ruby, they’d pretend nothing happened and Jacob would be left to himself, dwelling on how things could be and feeling more like the third wheel than ever.
So he finally did what Max so many times asked him to, he broke the kiss and stopped. He stared at Max for a few moments before attempting to push him away. He swallowed and licked his lips, trying to control his breathing, his heart still beating too fast. “Wha-” he cut himself off, clearing his throat before trying again. “Why are we doing this?” It felt obvious on Jacob’s part, he l… had feelings for Max, and although he didn’t think Max would be cruel enough to use him, he wanted to hear from him this was not nothing before they went any further. He never broke eye contact with Max after his question, a look of deep uncertainty on his dark eyes.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Maybe he was taking advantage of Max, the thought seemed to cross his mind suddenly, but he couldn’t deny the possibility. After everything that happened, this was the most vulnerable Jacob had seen Max be. One wrong word, and he could have destroyed what they had, what he did though, was start something he couldn’t have predicted. Still, his intention was to help Max, not for them to start making out of the blue, even if the cop was the one who initiate everything, Jacob had had his chance to say no, and he didn’t, he pushed further, made the two of them fall deeper into the abyss full of emotion and desire.
The comparisons with the kiss he shared with Ruby were impossible not to make, there was none of thrill of doing what they shouldn’t in a place they shouldn’t be, they got lost and forgot the urgency of the situation, and as consequence got interrupted. None of that urgency was present here with Max, they were safe, and the only one who could stop their actions were themselves. The truth was, both of them were weak, they gave in into what they wanted, tossing the consequences aside, went forward, but how far would they be willing to go?
But Jacob was tired of thinking, tired of wondering if what he was doing was wrong, why couldn’t he be the one who had something nice for a change? He called himself selfish, and it was true, but didn’t that come from the fact that he always had to give up or otherwise lost what he wanted? So just this time…. He felt Max smile against his lips, clear enjoyment, and that was enough to convince him that maybe it’d be okay to give in. Hands slid down his torso, under his shirt, bringing shivers down his spine that had little to do with the room temperature and everything to do with antecipation. The room felt very warm, Max’s fingers felling like fire on his skin. The cop’s words hit too close though, he should stop, he really did, but the bottom line was, he didn’t want to. “I will… if you tell me to…” he said back with a breathy tone, his arms encircling Max as he turned his head so he could trail his kisses to his jaw and down to his neck, before stopping near his ear so he could keep speaking. “I really don’t want to though.”

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- This was so risky, but it didn’t feel wrong. It was what Jacob wanted, but he kept denying it to himself. For most of his life he believed himself incapable of liking someone like this, he was broken and it didn’t matter how many times he tried, he couldn’t make himself be like the other people, so he eventually accepted that relationships and feelings were not for him, he contented himself with having Max and Ruby as friends, it was enough to chase away the loneliness. Or at least it should be, until Ruby proved him wrong. He had heard the ‘maybe you haven’t found the right person yet’ line more than once, he used to roll his eyes at it, but who knew that it would turn out to be true for him, too true. Now he was stuck with these feeling for two people at the same time.
He loosened his grip on Max, shifting so his position would be more comfortable. For a second he thought Max would move away from him, but the exact opposite happened. He felt the cop climb on top of him, bringing them so close to each other Jacob felt his breath hitch, and wondered if Max could hear his heart hammering in his chest. All the shifting and they never broke the kiss, their touches going beyond just passion in their intimacy, this was far from be about lust, but was about too many feelings. Right now Jacob realized every time Max joked about liking him or wanting to kiss him, they were not just jokes, and he felt stupid for not noticing before. So many times he laughed such comments off as Max being Max, never believing he’d like Jacob as anything but a friend.
The kiss was broken, and slowly Jacob opened his eyes, feeling a bit dazed. He silently stared at Max’s blue eyes, his breathing coming fast and his eyes darker than they’d ever been. He wondered briefly why they stopped, but perhaps Max had come to his senses, he couldn’t blame him for that, but he could feel disappointment. Could this break their friendship? If Max changed his mind and decided Jacob wasn’t worth it, he could probably pretend nothing ever happened, it was what he did with Ruby most of the time, but it’d be even harder now that he had a taste of what could have been.
Max words were not completely unexpected, Jacob believed after this Max would back off, and probably leave anyway, and they wouldn’t talk about this kiss, keep It like a shameful secret. Jacob would love if he felt the same way, if he could just forgive and forget, but he didn’t, couldn’t regret his actions, at least not now, with Max so close. “I’m not.” he said quietly, his voice sounding rough to his own ears. He took a deep breath, his eyes trailing away from Max, the intensity of the moment overwhelming him. He wanted to close the gap between them once again, he didn’t want to talk or discuss anything, he wanted to leave any complications for later, so he took the fact that Max didn’t move immediately as a sign that he wasn’t rejecting Jacob, and even if he knew it would make everything harder, he brought his hands to hold Max’s head gently, and pulled him down so they’d resume the kissing.

---- In the middle ----- --- Of a jelly sandwich --- He wanted to ask if the traffic was shittier or if Ruby was the one who made it shittier, because he’d be inclined to believe the later was true. But he didn’t had much of a chance to say anything, because Ruby noticed Natalie, and immediately was like a tension grew all around them, that wasn’t good, they were supposed to talk and be friendly. What the hell went wrong? “We’ve met a few times by accident, it’s kinda of funny actually.” He told Ruby, trying to keep the mood casual and friendly.
But this was already beyond his control, apparently the girls had already met each other, Natalie was even comfortable enough to take off her mask, or maybe it was just Jacob who was obsessive with hiding everything about himself. “Uhhh… You know each other already? That’s unexpected.” And slightly terrifying. That weird handshake the two just shared seemed to be a pretty good clue on how this meeting would go.
And Natalie was so perky too, but he suspected that was just her usual mood, it’s funny how she didn’t even remarked on his lack of mask, he’d think it’d be a novelty to his face, he almost felt offended that there was no reaction. “We do, yes. I’d think you’re stalking me.” He chuckled lightly, clearly not being serious. “And thanks, though I think Ted is a better name.” He grabbed the owl mask and put on, before turning to Ruby with a happy smile, she should remember it from when they met.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Silence filled the room after Jacob was done speaking. He expected Max to say something, anything. But no words came. The truth was, if Max walked away right now, Jacob wouldn’t do anything to stop him, but it would crush him to see that happen. It’d be like saying goodbye and he wasn’t sure he was ready for that. Max had come to his life and somehow got so deeply involved he now couldn’t imagine himself going back to how it was before, he had realized how lonely he had been feeling for years, living in a dull routine, filled with blood and killing, and he had convinced himself that everything was fine. Some would say what he had with Max and Ruby was an unhealthy, that they depended on each other too much, but between this, that brought him happiness and the so called independency he used to have, Jacob had no doubt in which he would chose.
But Max didn’t leave, nor did he take his hand away from Jacob’s grasp. Instead he reached close, his hand going to Jacob’s neck to bring their faces closer so their lips would meet. There was a minute Jacob’s mind blanked out, like a machine short circuiting for trying to process too much. He froze in his place, the grip on Max wrist tightening to what probably could be considered painful. His breathing stopped by sheer surprise, his eyes widening and his heart started racing uncontrollably as he felt his face grow impossibly warm. He didn’t know how to react, could barely understand how this was happening, Max was about to leave???? Now he was kissing Jacob??? What???
This was the incident with Ruby all over again, and he had promised, both to himself and to them, that he wouldn’t stand in the middle of their thing, he promised he would back off, he should push Max away, demand what the hell was he thinking, ask if this was some sort of joke or prank. But he couldn’t, he felt petrified in place, fear and shock holding him back, but also the wish to kiss him back.
Deep down, under layers upon layers of denial and insecurities, Jacob knew he had feelings for Max. Something that had started small, that brought forth his possessiveness, something he neither wanted nor knew what to do with, he had told himself a hundred times that Max and Ruby were off limits, that he was just the third wheel to their relationship, but those were just excuses to try to rationalize feelings away, and right now, with Max’s angry lips connected to his it was very hard to remember why keeping himself away was so important.
He felt guilty for closing his eyes and pushing back against Max, for accepting the kiss he knew would make things complicated. The thought of Ruby crossed his mind briefly, but he was a weak man who had a hard time giving up his selfish desires for the sake of other people. So he gave as good as he got, kissing Max with the passion he barely realized he was holding back, meeting the other’s furious actions with as much emotion. His free hand grasping Max’s shirt tightly, his knuckles going white by the force as he pulled the man closer. He wasn’t sure what prompted this, maybe heat of the moment? But that sounded like a weak explanation, it was more like a dam bursting open after too much pressure.

---- In the middle ----- --- Of a jelly sandwich --- No more than five minutes should have passed, but Jacob was already growing impatient. You’d think with the way Ruby drove she’d be faster to reach her destination. Of course she could be coming on foot or using the subway, but who was he kidding, Ruby always found any excuse to take a car and cause chaos around the city. Quietly he ignored any of the people coming and going from the cafe, he had no interest in their lives, so he didn’t notice a peculiar masked girl exiting the building with a steaming cup of coffee.
He perked up when he heard the well familiar name, only one person called him Ted, and ohh, he wasn’t wearing his mask… by the time he noticed that detail Jacob had already turned towards Natalie, a small smile on his face. It was funny how they kept bumping everywhere, from that first time with the bear fiasco, to the beachy cafe, and other times too. It was so often he could practically consider her a tentative friend, or at least someone he wasn’t willing to stab anytime soon. Thought he’d like to go a little longer without showing her his face, a shame.
Before Natalie could even finish her sentence, there was the unmistakable sound of wheels screeching to a halt. Distantly Jacob heard someone swear, and from the red car, Ruby climbed off, looking no more ruffled than usual. Hmm, interesting situation, he wondered how Ruby would like to meet Natalie, I’d be like the one time he met her PD friend, except he wasn’t so close to Natalie. “Hey Ruby, I waited enough.” He said in greeting with a happy smile. “And Hello, Natalie. Fancy seeing you here, though we say that to each other a lot.” The same enthusiasm was shown to the masked girl.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- He said the wrong thing. He didn’t know what exactly, but something he said cause Max to back off from the hug. This was why he didn’t do this feelings thing, he always found a way to screw things up, say the wrong thing or react the wrong way. This time it wasn’t different, he resisted a little when Max tried to break the hug, but gave in after a few moments, he wanted to help, not trap the cop. He looked up at Max, a worried frown that now was apparently permanently stuck on his face. Why was everything so complicated? Why couldn’t Max allow him to just hold him and smother him with protection?
And also that leg should be really hurting if Max couldn’t stop checking it. The painkiller should already be taking effect by now, perhaps they weren’t strong enough? He had better stuff in his first aid kit, and he was about to ask Max if he wanted something else for the pain when the cop started with his apologies. It was so unexpected that Jacob stared at Max while he spoke, and didn’t react for at least a minute. “What..? What do you mean take my safety away? I’m the one who brought this to all of us, first by pulling Ruby into that mission, and then by failing the mission! This is my fault Max, don’t think for a second you are the one who is putting everyone in danger. If we went by that logic I’m the one who should be running away from you and Ruby for your safety. But I really, really don’t want to do that, I’m too selfish.” He took a deep breath to calm himself down after that rant. The idea that Max could push him away and disappear from his life, he was filled with distress by just thinking it.
And then Max had to throw the L bomb on him. He felt his heart skip a beat and his breath caught in his throat. It couldn’t be a confession, like Max made it sound, surely he meant it like a friend, but for a split second Jacob believed it was more than that, they played around and they were very close, but… no… that was not possible, Max had Ruby, why was Jacob reacting so stupidly? Making stuff up when he should be more concerned in helping Max. “So you’re going to leave me?” His voice was very quiet, like a lost boy who didn’t know what he was doing. He reached his hand towards Max, hoping he’d do the same instead of walking away, like Jacob believed he was about to do. “Are you so afraid that you’re going to… I don’t know, give up everything we had going? Please don’t do that.” His voice was so pleadingly, he hated it. “You don’t have to protect us, or at least you can ask for our help if comes to it? Just… we can work something out… I…” He was almost to the point of begging, but cut himself off before he could say anything he’d regret.
It was a thing with him,, he couldn’t say the word Max had just used back, he really tried at that moment, but the phrase “I love you too, don’t leave.” Got stuck on his mouth, he felt like garbage for being unable to give back, but he also felt terrified from the word. He trusted, he cared deeply, and he might even love Ruby and Max, more than he should, probably, considering the tow of them had their thing going on, but he was unable to admit it. What if it backfired on him? What if all of this crumbled on his hands because of a simple word? He’d rather things stayed unchanged, except too much had changed already, and this relationship might crumble nonetheless if he did nothing. But it was so much easier to just do nothing instead of risk ruining everything.

---- In the middle ----- --- Of a jelly sandwich --- It felt like a set up for a date, the murderous kind of date, also known as the fun kind of date. It was vaguely threatening how she texted him saying the two of them should have some fun. The only thing missing was a kinky smiley emoji. He smiled at the message fondly, only Ruby could make a friendly text look evil, or maybe it was just his perception of her playing tricks. He honestly could do with a little fun, after everything they had gone through, with Max so seriously hurt, to go out and enjoy the day would be a wonderful change of pace.
Fun could either mean innocent outing with a friend, or that they would go shoot some unlucky bastards, you never knew with Ruby. So he grabbed a bag and stuffed it with a few of his weapons and the owl mask he had worn and they first met. It would be a nice reminder if he had the chance to use it. Though he hoped Ruby didn’t expect to take him for a drive, that was something he’d have to refuse, that kind of hell was only reserved for emergencies.
He got to Grand Lux Cafe soon, expecting Ruby to be waiting for him there. It turned out he got there first, It made a scowl appear on his face and Jacob stood for a few minutes near the door to the café, looking for all intents and purposes just like any other person, waiting for someone, harmless. He shifted impatiently, looking behind him towards the shop, wondering if he had the time to go inside and order something.
