----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- If he could, he would wrap Max around himself and never let him go. Keep his cop from harm’s way and protect him from everything and everyone. It was a silly thought, no one could be protected from everything, specially not someone like Max who found life and excitement from dangerous situations because of the so called danger kink, it was, after all, the trait that had brought them together in the first place, to take that away from Max was like taking away what made him special. But at least for this moment, Jacob could be the support Max so needed, he could lend his shoulder and offer his hugs so his friend would feel safe. It was almost like the aftermath of him finding Max bleeding at that slaughterhouse, the possessiveness he didn’t know where it came from, his wish to fight anything who dared to stay between them, and anger simmering under the surface for every person who dared hurt Max.
But he did his best to control that part of his, he wanted to help Max, not overwhelm him with his own feelings or scare the man with his anger. He took a deep breath and buried those feelings down again, loosening his grip slightly. He felt Max shift away to place the glass on the coffee table, and Jacob did the same with his mostly empty can. He thought they’d just go back to their previous position, it was light and comfortable, but Max surprised him by fully wrapping his arms around his waist. A proper hug this time, like the one Jacob had tried give Max when he first arrived at his apartment. Jacob fully reciprocated the gesture, wrapping his arms around Max’s torso, leaning his head against Max and running his hand on the man’s back in what he hoped was a comforting way.
It was like finally Max was giving in into his emotions, and Jacob listened in silence as he spoke, a small frown forming on his lips. Eventually he’d be fine, but he wasn’t fine right now, that was Jacob’s main concern. “This is not fake Max, it’s far from that. I just wish I could help more, but I can’t. I can’t take way your bad feelings, so I worry. But you know what? It’s okay for you to feel awful, and be weak, crumble because of your emotions, and show that this is hitting you more than you’d like. I’m here for you.” He’d catch Max if he fell, is what he wanted to say, but he felt that’d be too cheesy, so all he could do was try to squeeze Max’s problems away, and that was exactly what he was doing.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- He’d like to have Max and Ruby in his house, spending time with him, the three of them just being friends and forgetting anything to do with crime, Enigma, Bianchi or PD. It was like he craved for some domesticity after everything that happened since he received the contract to kill Jack White. From bad times to good times, the three of them had an odd bond that grew from a desire to kill and humiliate, and somewhere along the road they started caring for each other. He felt much less lonely that before, surrounded by people who truly cared about him, it was strange how he didn’t notice he needed someone to feel close to until those two fell into his life, and now he dreaded to think about returning to his solitude.
He was so content and comfortable cuddling with Max, that when the cop shifted and appeared to want to lift his head, Jacob squeezed him closer to him, as if telling him not to leave. Thankfully that didn’t seem to be Max’s intention in the first place. The cop’s words brought a small smile on Jacob’s face, okay was relative right now, true. “I don’t know, are you about to cry or scream in despair?” If Max didn’t want to talk about White, that was fine with him, it was just his worry getting the best of him once again. He accepted play the question out as a game instead of making Max sad by prying too much. Instead he brought his coke to his lips, drinking about half of the can in one go.

----- Too Much Worry ----- --- And Lots of Blood --- Ruby was fully in the caretaker role, it was a bit funny to watch her act like a busy mom trying to take care of her unruly child. The only thing missing was Max making a fuss and throwing a tantrum to avoid eating. But it bothered him that she would avoid eating, it was already quite late morning, and somehow Jacob thought she wouldn’t like to have lunch either. “Don’t forget to eat Ruby, seriously. If not now, at least before you leave.” He said a bit concerned, almost in a plea.
Rest, that sounded like a wonderful suggestion, if he tried, he probably would fall asleep by just staying seating in silence. Max didn’t look much different, his eyes drooping as if he was about to fall asleep again, even thought he had slept through the night and more. Being hurt tired people out, Jacob knew that very well. “We’ll be fine, don’t worry Max. If we can survive Ruby driving, we can survive anything.” He joked lightly. It was funny how Max always worried about everyone else before he worried about himself, some would say it was an admirable trait, Jacob thought it was one of Max’s biggest flaws. “Lucius was worried about you, you know. Whining and looking everywhere around the apartment. I think he’ll only be completely well when you go back to him, fully healed.” The same way Jacob and Ruby would only be completely fine once they were sure Max was fine.
Just then, there was knock on the door and a nurse entered carrying a tray with various medical supplies. She kindly explained Jacob and Ruby had to leave so she could change Max’s bandages, also that the patient needed rest and visitors should be avoided until the next day. Jacob shot a look at Ruby, before looking back at Max. “We’ll take care of Lucius, don’t worry.” With that he got up from the chair, stretching his sore muscles and waited for Ruby do prepare herself for leaving as well.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- He always liked talking about his masks, he had so many, a few of them with meanings, good as well as bad memories. There were some he never used, other he used all the time, and a few that he used once and never again. If Max got him started it was unlikely he wouldn’t stop at least until the next morning, and Jacob still planned to get a little sleep, even if it was already close to 3AM and he’d rather stay up and talk to Max for now. “I’d show you right now, but I don’t want you to get up again with that leg. And it would take too long anyway.” Some other time, meaning there would be other times Max would come and spend time with him, if before Jacob didn’t want anyone in his home, now it filled him with warmth to think about it. “You are free to come another day and bring Ruby as well.” That was as much of an invitation as he would give out, as well as his permission to tell Ruby about his address.
It was his house, and he could do whatever he wanted, so he got comfortable on his couch, crossing his legs under himself leaning against Max. The cop didn’t answer his question, it wasn’t really that important, more like a playful protest to the action. A thoughtful silence seemed to settle around them, not awkward or sad, just two people enjoying each other’s presence. On his way back home, Jacob had imagined the innumerous way he could comfort Max, keep him busy and distracted with conversation, hear Max talk about how he killed White, even getting drunk until no thought made sense. This was nice though, silent support and mutual understanding, Jacob could stay like this until Max decided he want to speak about the situation or not.
He felt Max lean his head against his shoulder and turned slightly to look at the cop. He wasn’t as worried as before, but not everything was magically fixed by just a few minutes. Jacob leaned his head on top of Max’s, his arm circling the other man’s shoulder in an embrace. It was odd how he never felt awkward hugging or holding him. He was never one for casual touches, and this went beyond anything he had ever done with any friend, anyone could tell him this was not how friends usually acted, but with Max it felt right. “Are you okay?” He asked in a quiet voice, letting his worry show once more now that there was a lull in the conversation, his eyes were distractedly fixed on the coke can in his hand, the hand that embraced Max lightly playing with the fabric of his shirt.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- So emphatic to reassure Jacob that it was no problem, it made him feel a little better, at least Max wasn’t thinking he lacked care or trust, that was the last thing he wanted. “Do you really get it? I think you weren’t very clear there.” He laughed in a teasingly manner, before he grew more serious. “But I mean it, I do trust you, and Ruby as well.” He just wanted to make that clear. It was Just he had a hard time expressing it, his life consisted of hiding everything about himself, from his face to his name, to his real self. It was hard to do a turn around and change habits.
For a moment he thought Max would make the bad choice and try to drown his pain with alcohol, Jacob wouldn’t exactly approve, but he wouldn’t complain, nor would he force Max to choose the painkillers. But after a brief consideration the cop picked the drugs. With a smile Jacob place his can of coke on the coffee table and went back to the kitchen and put the beer away before grabbing a glass of water for Max. He returned and handed him the glass, before quickly disappearing to the bathroom. He found his first aid kit, and took a not too strong painkiller, it should be enough to dull Max’s pain, but it wouldn’t make him drowsy or high.
On his way back to Max he heard the question about the masks. Did he really thought Jacob just kept his hundreds of masks on the walls? Staring and judging anyone who entered his house. “That’d be weird and look ugly. Too many things in a single wall. They are in my closet.” With the exception of the gas mask and the demon mask Max had given to him, those two were the special ones that always stayed on the shelf behind the couch. He handed Max the painkiller, and looked around, wondering if he should do something else for Max. He felt something tug on his belt, and fell on the couch in a sitting position with a small yelp. “What was that for?” He asked with a smile and a gentle glare, before raising again to grab the coke can from the coffee table, and made himself comfortable again, sitting close to Max in a similar manner they were doing in the cab.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Trust, something that was so hard to come for Jacob, trust brought opportunities for the other person to take advantage of you, it put your own safety on someone else’s hands. A year ago he wouldn’t dream of doing something like that, and now here he was, feeling sad the Max could have doubts about Jacob’s trust on him. “I trust you, you know. I just never thought it was really that important. I like my corner.” He shrugged, thinking his explanation sounded rather weak. Now he made it look like he’d never reveal anything if Max hadn’t found it, and the worst part was that it could have been a real possibility. Jacob was really bad at being friends, he realized. “Sorry…??” not even that sounded honest, he should just give up.
It was funny, Jacob offered something and Max went straight to the alcohol. After what happened today he couldn’t really blame the man. He left for the kitchen, going to his fridge and took out a can of beer and a diet coke for himself. He went back and found Max massaging his calf, the same one that had been pierced open little more than a month ago. “Don’t you want to forgo the alcohol and take something for the pain instead?” He asked concerned, he had forgotten Max was not fully recovered from that leg, and he had climbed Jacob’s stairs twice that day. He’d leave the decision for Max, however, and would hand him the beer if he wanted.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- It was good to see Max slowly going back to normal. His emotions now in check as they talked about something rather mundane, even if the topic was aggravating for Jacob, it made Max laugh, and that sound alone gave Jacob some peace, and for a moment he truly believed everything would be fine. The banter felt light, the playfulness that filled the conversation was a welcomed shift. “No. He’s not even a little right.” His voice still carried exasperation, but he was playing up the offended feeling for the sake of playfulness. “I’m just an IT tech, I have no idea what are you talking about.” He knew the old man just had some details wrong, but was overall right, he thought Jacob killed random people, and the man no idea how deeply he was into this life, war paranoia and a bit of too much imagination made Jacob be seen not as a criminal, but a monster who could snap and attack everyone at the slightest provocation, as if he’d be stupid enough to call that much attention to himself.
Max acted as a good friend and Jacob had no idea. December was such a long time for him to discover his address, and he never mentioned to him or told Ruby, he felt touched by that revelation. And on top of that, the cop made Jacob’s biggest nuisance to back off, it was a great surprise. “Wow, I had no idea. I was starting to think the old man died in his house and no one noticed or something. Thank you, I mean it.” He said honestly, not only for talking with his neighbor, but also for respecting his boundaries until now.
They finished climbing the stairs, Jacob didn’t notice any discomfort coming from Max, he was more worried about the other’s emotional health, and wasn’t paying attention to any physical signs. He opened the door, stepping inside and leaving it open for Max to enter. Home sweet home. “Why you never told me about that? December is a pretty long time.” He asked while taking off his shoes. If he was being honest, he could make a safe guess and say Max didn’t want to make him angry, but Jacob hoped the cop knew him better than that, he wouldn’t really get furious over something this small, hurt perhaps, if it hadn’t been an accident, annoyed maybe, if he just barged in without any explanation, but his grumpiness would be over quickly.
Now Jacob was at a predicament, he was not used to have people at his house, he barely knew how to behave on these cases. It sounded so simple on his head, Max and he would talk, Jacob would comfort Max some more, and they’d be happy or something. Except he felt oddly awkward and unsure in a way that had nothing to do with what happened during the night. “Do you… want something?” he offered quite sure that was a thing people did, maybe.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- That frustration was real, there was no faking that level of anger for pointless endeavors. Jacob knew because he felt exactly the same. That meant the girl was much of a victim of this deceit as Jacob, she couldn’t be a set up by the Bianchi. She handed him the bear, and he turned it around on his hands, looking for anything that made this bear valuable. It looked pretty ordinary, squeezing it told him it was unlikely there was anything hidden inside, but he could be wrong. With a shrug, Jacob gave up and held the bear on his side, he’d feel a little ridiculous going around Chicago with it, but at least his mission was successful.
The girl was saying something in another language, and Jacob would bet it didn’t mean anything kind, he could relate, really. He kicked the open box of the bear to see if there was anything inside, but other than soft stuffing it was empty. He looked up when the girl addressed him, her offer was very kind, and it confused Jacob why she’d do it. “You can keep it all to yourself. I was here for the bear, as unbelievable as that sounds.” He rolled his, before glaring at the bear one more time. “Good luck finding anything. And I really like your mask, by the way.” With that he started walking towards the exit.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- He couldn’t help but wince when the girl showed no mercy for the guard’s crotch. Jacob was a cold blooded killer who held no sympathy for any of his victims, but there were some things every man could relate. Curiously he noted she killed most of her targets, but not all of them. The ones dead seemed to be out of necessity or lack of care, but the ones who survived were no longer targets for her. So curious. Jacob on the other hand, didn’t like witnesses, so after he finished reloading his gun a second time that day, he approached the pile of dead men, turning each one of them around and shooting anyone who seemed to still be alive. It crossed his mind Max wouldn’t appreciate Jacob killing unconscious men, but he ignored the thought.
His diligence to kill every target gave enough time for the woman to get to the fallen box. Her exclamation was what made Jacob look up and notice that. He did a quick jog towards her, ready to start fighting again, that is until he was close enough to see the contents. A furry, cute plush bear, staring at them with beady dark eyes, judging their every action. “Are you kidding me right now?!” He send a deeply offended look at the girl, though she would only see his mask, his voice carried enough emotion to tell exactly what he was feeling, and she wasn’t much different apparently, she sounded as surprised as him. “Is this a fucking joke? Did they set you up here for… What?! I don’t even fucking know.” He let out a frustrated groan, he didn’t know what was worse, a bobby trap full of death and needles, or a freaking teddy bear. He’d say the needles.
He was so mad right now, it was like everything he did for this family was a joke, or a test… he didn’t even care to know anymore. He took a deep breath to calm himself down, he had lost any will he had to fight with this girl, it simply wasn’t worth the effort. At least he got to kill some people. He stretched his arm towards the girl, as if asking for the bear, he was being paid for this, so he might as well. “Can I have it?”

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- Jacob’s plan was to keep shooting until there was nothing else to shoot. It had been going well so far, but he only had so many bullets. Taking the opportunity after the box exploded, Jacob reloaded his gun quickly, the enemies’ bullets flying above his head, hitting the box he was using as cover and bouncing off the ground dangerously close to him. He wasn’t exactly worried, the number of guards was steady dwindling, and if he and the girl kept this up there would be no more guards in a few minutes.
To his great surprise, the girl leaped from behind the box directly at the guards. Was she crazy or suicidal? Well, if she died right there he wouldn’t have anything to worry about, the box’s contents would be his, even if it was crap. She was a great distraction though, the guards paid mostly attention to her as she was attacking up close, leaving Jacob free to shoot anyone who poked their heads out of cover. He hit one of them, who toppled over another bringing both men down, Jacob killed the second one quickly.
He heard a yelp from the girl, and honestly was surprised it hadn’t come earlier, she was too close to get out of there unscathed, it didn’t worry him in the slightest. Jacob let out a small laugh as the guards appeared to hesitate when there were only three of them left. “Aww, are you guys done playing with us? I was having so much fun.” He taunted from his position behind the box, before taking one shot that hit one of them men in the neck. He would have finished them off, but his gun clicked empty when he pulled the trigger a second time. “Damn, of all times.”

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- Her words were not something Jacob believed, she had no reason to spare him, they both wanted the same thing, it was natural they’d want to kill each other. He could pause on that will for now, but he was sure as soon as the guard problem was dealt with, they’d have to resume the fight for the box. Jacob was starting to think at this point whatever it was inside it was not worth the trouble.
The guards didn’t hesitate to start shooting, and neither did Jacob, his first bullet hit squarely on the guy’s torso, blood spilling on the ground as if painting it with his life. He was a good shot, but the warehouse was dark, it was difficult to make out the lethal points on the guards. Every other bullet he shot hit something, but he could tell not all of them were fatal. He saw only one man fall dead by his hand before the girl started shooting as well. One more guard fell and it was like the men realized they weren’t petty thieves that could be easily dealt with. This fight seemed to not be too hard after all, Jacob had severely overestimated these people.
The girl grabbed the flashlight and turned it on once more, turning it towards the guards who squinted and hid away from the sudden brightness. Jacob had to squint until his eyes adjusted to the light once again, but this time it was easier since it wasn’t shining directly at him. He took opportunity of the distraction to shoot one guy who had fallen with a leg injury, the man slumped on the ground and Jacob heard someone scream in distress.
One of the guards jumped from behind the boxes and Jacob shot him on the head as well. If everyone came at them like that one by one it’d easy to pick them out. He heard the same voice who had given orders say something else again, but the bullets and gunshots made it impossible to make out any words. The girl’s flashlight was proving to be valuable to not only blind the enemy, but also to show Jacob their position, he shot one more man down before the flashlight exploded from the top of the box. “What do you think I’m doing? Laundry?” He snapped at the girl, not appreciating orders from someone who was his enemy not five minutes ago. A bullet whizzed to his left, right where they had left the prize box. It hit the mysterious thing squarely, making it fall from where it was and break open on the ground. He didn’t have time to look at the damage before he had to duck behind the boxes to avoid being shot, but hoped whatever it was did not broke.

---- A star in the city. ----- --- Everyday shining --- This was shaping to be a messy fight, both of them skilled enough, armed with knives and guns. His attempt to shove her away was successful and he quickly lifted himself from the ground. Unfortunately his shove brought the girl close to the box they both wanted, it’d be the perfect opportunity for her to snatch it, if only he managed to run and stop her bef-.
A loud bang echoed through the room, a gun sliding across the floor. There was a minute of silence where everything went still. Jacob frantically looking around, waiting for the inevitable to happen. Soon enough footsteps sounded from the exit as the guards approached fast. This was exactly what he wanted to avoid, there was only one ground exit in the warehouse and it was soon to be filled with armed guards now. He couldn’t even dash thought the entrance, he’d get a face full of bullets if he tried that, and he couldn’t exactly fly through the window. Fight or fight were the options.
Jacob moved out the door’s line of sight at the same time he saw the girl lunge for him, he didn’t care about her anymore, he just wanted to bail, better if it was with the box, but if not he wouldn’t spill any tears over that. The girl wasn’t going for him, but for her weapons instead. He dived behind one of the large boxes, noting he ended beside the girl, adrenaline rushing on his blood as the door slammed open to allow dozen or so guards to pass through. He heard someone scream something, an order for them or for the other guards, he didn’t know. He peeked from behind the box, grabbing his pistol from the holster on his hip, no need to save bullets anymore. “I blame this on you, wait until we deal with the guards before shooting me on the back.” He informed the girl, taking aim at one of the guards and shooting.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Max did not answer his question, and Jacob did not push the topic further, instead, he felt the cop’s hand on his own, Max’s warm hand holding his in a reassuring way, it did made him feel a bit better, not enough to make him okay to be away from Max, but at least he knew the cop was fine for now. He figured Max would decide to stay or not when they arrived at his building, or that he had already made up his mind about leaving. At any rate, if Max decided he wanted to go home after all, Jacob would be glad to follow him, it would be a weird turn for the driver to come all the way to Jacob’s address before turning around and going to Max’s, but he doubted the man would complain about the extra money that would cost.
Jacob didn’t feel exactly tired, he felt more strung up and running on his emotions alone. Now that he was seated and more relaxed, he finally was started to feel the need to sleep, not urgent, more like a laziness that settled on his bones and made him want to lay down and close his eyes. Usually when not on a job, Jacob tried to go to bed quite early, never knowing when he’d need to stay awake the whole night for one reason or another, he had learned to always take advantage when he had time. Right now he could sleep, but he could stay awake all night if needed, it all depended on how Max would react.
Eventually the car stopped in front of the building, Max climbed out with no further word, which made Jacob smile contently. He turned to the driver and took out some of the money he had taken from White, paying for the ride and leaving quite the tip. He’d bet now the man would stop shooting Max and him weird looks, had he never seen two men be friendly and hold hands? People got weird for the smallest of things. He exited the car with no further word, approaching Max and then the building’s door. As he opened it, Max finally started talking, revealing how he discovered where Jacob lived.
If he was being honest, Jacob had thought Max had grown tired of the secret being kept and had dig up information on Jacob in case he ever needed. To hear that it had been somewhat of an accident brought by none other than his old neighbor actually made him feel a little bit better. “That bastard, making my life difficult! He’s convinced I’m a serial killer or something.” He felt so exasperated right now, what if it had been anyone else but Max. He opened the door and stepped inside, making way so Max could do the same before starting to climb the stairs towards his apartment on the third floor. “Is that why he stepped bothering me? Because you spoke to him? He’s like, a hundred years old, he should be dead already.” He had been tempted many times to help the old man with that, but that would be too suspicious.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- It was oddly intimate the way the two walked away from the harbor, close to each other in a half embrace, Jacob wouldn’t be surprised if a few people started giving them strange looks. Not that he cared about judgements from strangers, but as a habit, he didn’t like to bring attention to himself. Luckily it was already quite late, very few people dared to stay outside at this hour in a crime ridden city such as Chicago. It felt good to have Max this close, a warm feeling filling his chest, for being able to be there for him, for being able to make him feel better. Jacob felt like he could fight the entire world if it meant Max and Ruby would be happy; He never meant to feel so deeply for these two, never even knew he was capable of caring so much, and now here he was, doing exactly that.
The harbor was left behind, along with its memories and ghosts. In its place appeared the busy streets, restaurants and pubs open everywhere, the only sign of life coming from the buildings. Lights chasing away the darkness in a city that seemed to never sleep. It was surprising to Jacob that there still would be people eating outside at this hour, but at least it meant there were plenty cabs available for them to take. That was good, they wouldn’t have to hunt down for one, things seemed to be looking up for Max and him.
They choose one and Max made himself comfortable on the back seat, Jacob climbed inside after him, still keeping himself close to Max, not from fear or worry this time, but simply because he wanted and there was no one there to stop him. Before Max could speak, Jacob gave the driver his own address. The action didn’t even had much thought behind it, he wanted to get home, and Max knew where it was already, the choice was simple. It was odd that he still didn’t care about Max knowing where he lived, he was curious, true, and he thought the cop eventually would share the knowledge with Ruby, but that was also fine with him. It’d be a shame to lose his corner no one knew about, but in the end, he didn’t mind as much as he thought he would.
The cab sped away with them, it shouldn’t take very long for them to reach his building, he didn’t even know if Max would want to come with him, maybe he’d want to go home and rest, but somehow, Jacob was still a bit wary to leave him alone, the events of the night was still to fresh, Jacob knew how thoughts could haunt you when you were left alone to dwell on them. He leaned back against the car seat, so close to Max their arms were touching, and he looked at the cop, his worry no longer the strongest emotion. “you’re not going home now, are you?” He asked softly so only he and Max could hear the conversation.

----- Somebody or Some Body ----- --- Helping out --- Reassuring people felt like a hit and miss with Jacob. He could either makes things better, change the person’s mind and even make the guilt vanish, or he could makes things worse, trigger an angry reaction and make the person hate him on the process. Thankfully this time seemed to be the first case, Jacob truly believed in what he said, he was afraid Max wouldn’t though, he could understand how the thought of making some kids lose their father could bother some people, even if to him it made no difference. He had seen that picture before, but when he thought about it, he only saw a man who had too much power and wanted to use said power to kill not only him, but his friends as well. Many times life was like that, only the stronger survive, and up until now, Jacob had managed to be the stronger one.
He didn’t care that Jack was dead, he was glad even, but he did care that it mattered to Max, and that made him almost feel regretful, for not being there when it happened, for being unable to make things magically better. What he could do now was hold Max and hope it was enough, make the man feel everything was eventually going to be fine, even if Jacob couldn’t really promise that. He felt Max’s hands go from his back to his shoulders, and lift his head so the two of them could meet eye to eye. Jacob still looked worried, searching for something in Max’s eyes, there was a deep gratitude there, the hardness that seemed to be settled there for now, but also something Jacob couldn’t name, but it made him scared somehow, not from Max or anything the man could or would do, but from the strange feelings he couldn’t explain.
They stared at each other, words felt unnecessary now from his part, Max seemed to be calming down, coming back to himself slowly, no longer on the edge of breaking, though he suspected it would be quite a while until Max was back to what he was before, if he ever did. Jacob chose to believe that he would, or the guilt he felt would go to unbearable levels, and that was exactly what he didn’t need right now. Max made a joke, so unexpected it made Jacob laugh, more in relief than really thinking it was very funny. “Yeah, that was unfair. I expect compensation.” He smiled, relief clear in his eyes.
They were done here, Jacob wanted to leave this harbor behind him for at least the next few months, this place was piling up more and more bothersome memories. He kept one arm around Max as he turned around to start walking away, wishing to keep the cop close to him. “So, I’d say let’s go home, but it’s late and we have no car… how long until we find a cab, you think?”
