One, two, three Now you're thirty-three It took longer for Ruby to unlock her door compared to the last time Jacob was there. More locks? Or was it harder to open locks? He would reckon it was both. The door was open and Jacob was greeted by Ruby’s smiling face, ushering him inside. He took the time to shoot a curious look at her door, and sure enough, he counted five locks instead of the three he had seen last time. Could someone have an addiction to locks? If not, Ruby was certainly trying. He turned to Ruby when she talked to him. “Yes, it’s why I’m here.” He looked past her, trying to find where she had put the cake and treats. He picked up the two boxes, they weren’t so heavy that he had a problem taking them to his car, but he had to be careful. If bumped into something, all their hard work could be destroyed. He shot a look at Ruby, as if asking if she was ready to go, he noted she was carrying a camera strapped to her wrist. Not really a surprise, but this time he didn’t really mind, he would’ve take a few pictures himself, it was a celebration, after all, and it would be nice to have photos to remember it. She asked after the puppy, that was waiting for them patiently in his car. “He has too much energy and it’s adorably annoying. I think it’s a good fit for a Max, the cop. He’s waiting on the car, if you’re wondering.” He went through the front door, which Ruby was thankfully holding for him, and shot her a thankful smile. The elevator didn’t take long to come, which was weird, Ruby’s elevator seemed to be strangely fast. He held the door with his foot for her to come too, and down they went. “Is Andrea coming too?” He asked Ruby while exiting the elevator. The friendly cop did help making the treats (Or Jacob and Ruby helped her make the treats, but that was a detail.) and since she worked for the PD, she knew Max, it would only be natural for Ruby to invite her. He approached his car, and opened the backseat door to put the cake and treats beside the puppy, who whined and put his snout out of one of the breathing holes. Jacob would guess it was bored. He motioned for Ruby to enter the passenger’s seat, before going to the driver’s side.

One, two, three Now you're thirty-three When his phone chirped with a received text, Jacob was already up and about. He had some things to prepare for Max’s party, most important of all, he had to find a way to keep Max inside the box. Max being the German Shepard puppy Ruby and he had decided to buy for their cop friend as birthday gift. It had been a sudden idea that came from a joke. Wouldn’t it be funny if Max had a dog? And we could even call it Max! And now here was Jacob, being licked and trying to wrestle an overexcited puppy inside a box. He took the time to check his phone and send a reply “cant wait (;”, Ruby sounded excited, and really, he couldn’t blame her, he too couldn’t wait to see Max’s face when they broke into his apartment bearing gift, cake and treats. He was sure Max wasn’t even expecting it, he hadn’t really told them his birthday was today, and Jacob thought that was a really selfish of him, how were they supposed to anything for it if they didn’t know? Luckily Ruby had contacts in the PD that could tell her these things. Finally the puppy decided to behave and enter the box. He sealed the top opening with duct tape, and the only way he could look at the little puppy inside was through the breathing holes. This past night that he had to take care of Max, the puppy, was a reminder of why he didn’t had pets. They were messy and too much work for his tastes. He’s rather call the squirrels of his childhood, the ones he put into the death holes, his pets and be done with it. He placed the dog box on his couch and went to get ready for the party. He would have to pick Ruby on her apartment before going, and this time he made sure he was the one driving. They didn’t need to kill the puppy and the cake they worked so hard to make because Ruby couldn’t take her foot off the gas pedal. He picked up a wrapped package and placed it on top of the puppy box, lifting everything up and exiting his apartment. It wasn’t often he got to use his car, most of the time he used public transportation to go around the city, since a personal car would be easy to recognize. This time, however, he wasn’t going anywhere that required discretion, and they needed a way to move all the stuff to Max’s apartment. He gently placed the dog on the backseat, before entering car and driving away. It took less than fifteen minutes for him to arrive at Ruby’s building. As he usually did, he picked the lock of the building’s front door, and soon arrived on Ruby’s door. There was a couple entering the neighboring apartment, the girl looked vaguely familiar, but Jacob couldn’t place from where. At any rate, they did not see him, and he knocked Ruby’s door, knowing it would be quicker than try to pick all the locks.

It's a date! There's murder involved Apparently sweetcheeks was going to become a thing now. He preferred when Ruby just called him Birdy, it was less demeaning. And now just the thought of her calling him ‘daddy’ in crowded room made him shudder, he would need to find another way to get back to her. “Shut up about the sweetcheeks.” He said sullenly instead, a frowning at her. As soon as Ruby placed the key cart on a socket on the wall, the lamp bathed them in a pale light, make the room seem more lively. It didn’t matter that he tried to put the fact they had no change of clothes out of his mind, Ruby was glad to bring it up for him. He looked away at her words, not sure why the idea made him feel so out of depth, it wasn’t like it would be the first time sharing a bed with someone (for sleeping, he meant, nothing else was happening!!) “Well… Maybe we won’t even need to worry about that, it shouldn’t be that hard to kill the target. Before you know it, we’ll be leaving.” He wasn’t sure if he was trying to reassure himself or convince Ruby, but the best way to deal with a problem like that was to avoid it until he couldn’t anymore. The same could be used to deal with his flushed cheeks, avoidance. “You’re being ridiculous, My mind isn’t anywhere, and I’m not flushing.” Her voice though, why was she talking like that? It made his heart speed up a bit for some reason, his mouth went dry and the warmness of his face just seemed to increase. He made sure to keep his back turned to Ruby so she wouldn’t see his face, leaving the room in brisk pace that could only mean he was in a hurry to kill the target, it wasn’t anything like him trying to escape the blonde woman and her weird mind games, at all. Focus, kill the target, make it an accident. That was what should be in his mind right now, finish the job without botching it up, how hard could it be? By the time they were in front of the room and Ruby was picking the lock efficiently, the blush had already disappeared, thankfully. The door swung open silently, and a spacious room bathed in darkness greeted them. Jacob quickly made him way in, shutting the door behind him without paying much attention if Ruby had entered as well, he wanted to finish this as soon as possible. He started seeing the details of the room, it was pretty similar to the layout of Ruby and Jacob’s room, except it looked more lived on, with a few clothes scattered about and suitcase in one of the corners. There was a window covered by a long curtain that Jacob went to inspect a bit closer. It was a fair drop down, could certainly kill if diving headfirst, a good option for an accident, make it look like Mr. White slipped and fell down, but surely they could do better than that…

It's a date! There's murder involved What was there to find out? Jacob shot Ruby an odd look, somehow not quite grasping what she meant but having a feeling there was an innuendo there. Any thought he might have to try to figure out was tossed out as soon as she continued talking, the threat to call him daddy making Jacob’s expression morph into one of horrific disbelief. “Nonono, nevermind, Forget about fluffybuns. I don’t need this kind of reputation.” That gave an insight of what Ruby was possibly into he wasn’t sure he ever needed to know. He could see Ruby was enjoying the teasing too much and Jacob just rolled his eyes at her smirk. “That’s a bed.” He deadpanned to her question, her confusion was understandable, however, he too somehow expected there would be two beds, or at least a couch, but nope, one bed was all they deserved. Jacob’s mind jumped to the conclusion that someone would have to sleep on the floor, Ruby’s on the other hand, immediately settle that by deciding it was fine to share a bed. “I guess we’ll have to, if comes to it” They were both responsible adults, right? They could handle one bed for both of them, no problem… and they would have to take off the fancy clothes, with no other option to change into… yeah, his face was definitely warming up now, he decided that train of thought was unnecessary to think about, they wouldn’t have to spend the night.. He shot her a playfully offended look at her rules. “What? You’re telling me that. The same applies to you, y’know” He crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes in her direction. It wasn’t like Jacob had any interest in women like that… Ruby seemed to trust whoever was coming to aid them, he shrugged, still feeling slightly suspicious, but he would let her handle that, if something went wrong, at least he would have someone to blame. “Fine then, the earlier we go, the more time we might have.” He shot the room a look one more time, before going to the door and exiting. Still no one could be seem at the corridor, the hotel looking almost abandoned, Jacob figured most people were still at the party, which was good, less witnesses. The target’s room was one floor above them, Jacob took the stairs, thinking waiting for the elevator would be a waste of time. The climb was short, didn’t even left him winded and he creeped along the corridor, looking at the plaques displaying the room numbers. 214… 208… 204… 203… 202! There was a woman with a cart full of cleaning products coming in their direction, and Jacob slowed down his pace to let her pass them by, standing beside the target’s room door, his eyes following the woman’s path, who didn’t seem to notice anything amiss. “Wanna work the lock?” He asked Ruby, still keeping an eye down the corridor in case anyone showed up.

It's a date! There's murder involved Pet names were a horrible invention, why would anyone call the people they care about such ridiculous names without it being an ironic way? He had no idea. He was sure Ruby was having way too much fun calling him stupid things. So far, he was fine with being called honey or dear, but a line had to be drawn at some point. “Please, don’t ever call me sweetcheeks again.” He grimaced at her, the horrid nickname sounding sour to his ears, but he had a feeling protesting would only make Ruby more determined to call him bad pet names, so after a few moments, he added. “Unless, of course, you want me to call you fluffybuns.” He smiled teasingly. He raised an eyebrow at her question, he knew exactly what she was doing, hiding her real meaning behind lies and half questions, if anyone overheard them talking they would only hear a couple saying mundane stuff. But still, it was just wrong to think of Mr. White being related to him. “He’s staying on the floor above us. But I guess maybe it’s for the best, I would not like it if people realized we’re any way related, he’s so ridiculous.” He hoped Ruby would understand what he meant, the farther they stayed from the target, the less reason people had of suspecting they were to blame when the man died. The elevator doors closed, and up they went, while Jacob completely missed any looks Ruby threw at him. He made a confused noise at what she said. Why was she bringing other people to this mission? “What kind of stuff? Is it safe to just bring people in here?” He trusted her, he really did, but that trust was not extended to whoever Ruby had called. The elevator arrived on the second floor with a ding, the doors opening for them to exit. They arrived at a long corridor, hundreds of doors greeted them, and Jacob was thankful that this time he at least had a number to look for when they went searching the target’s room. It didn’t take him long to find room 314, and he quickly used his key to open the door, motioning for Ruby to enter as well. It was a very spacious room, with a television, a little cooler, a table and two chairs, a soft carpeted floor, but most importantly, it had only one queen sized bed, enough for a couple looking to spend the night, before having to go back to the party the next day. The problem was, Jacob and Ruby were not really a couple, it would be, at best awkward if they had to spend the night, since it was either share a bed or one of them sleep on the floor. Hopefully they would not have to cross that bridge, and plan A would work effortlessly. He looked at Ruby expectantly, as if to gauge what she thought of the room, all in all, with the exception of the single bed, it wasn’t that bad, in his opinion, which was expected for such a fancy party. “Should we wait for this friend of yours to arrive then? Before going to see my cousin, I mean.” It wouldn’t be very smart to go directly at the target’s room, in case there were cameras. He looked at every corner of the room, but couldn’t find anything suspicious. That meant nothing, however, if someone wanted to spy, there were many ways to conceal a camera or a mic.

It's a date! There's murder involved Donating to charity didn’t mean much, depending who you’re dealing with. Jacob had seemed many rich men who had used such events as cover ups for more shady business and to meet new contacts. As far as he could tell, this one seemed to be legit, the people he had talked to seemed genuinely believe to be helping a good cause, but what did he know? “Maybe he’s a crafty charity man…” He said in response to Ruby, still smirking. In the end. Mr. White could very well be among the dirty businessmen who were only interested in themselves, Jacob didn’t know enough to judge, and didn’t really care to find out. One thing was for certain, to carry around him such a symbol of weakness, telling everyone that he had a family, asking for his kids to be targeted, it was foolish. It made Jacob think he didn’t even realize people could come after him. He asked just to be sure, but he kind of deserved Ruby’s sarcasm for his obvious question. “Oh, really? You should go in the middle of the room and shout then, so more people can hear it.” He replied back with a playful glare. The people thankfully paid the two no mind, distantly he noticed the Scotsman and his wife dancing in the middle of the crowd, as happy as ever, like they were genuinely enjoying the evening. One more swipe of his eyes and he saw the target merrily talking something or another to a small group of people, seemly unware that two assassins had an eye on him. Ignorance is bliss, as some say. Ruby’s question brought Jacob’s attention back to her, and he thought carefully on how to answer. “I’m not sure, but we’ve been here only for a few hours, I think we’ll have plenty of time to meet anyone important. Besides, this is a two night event.” He eyed the passing guard, looking bored and uninterested, no wonder it was so easy to infiltrate this event, it was like no one here even realized it was possible for things to go wrong. As soon as they got to the hotel, Ruby grabbed her phone a called somebody. He didn’t stay to listen what she was saying. He trusted the woman enough to not screw up the mission, on purpose or by accident, since she was also a professional as well. Jacob went to the receptionist, a pretty blond woman who faked a smile easily enough when he talked to her. He gave his fake alias, and sure enough he had a reservation under that name, it was already payed and everything. He just had to give some (fake) information to check in, before the woman gave him the key to room 314. A floor above the one Mr. White was staying. He went back to his ‘fiancée’, who was finishing sending a text from what he could tell, Jacob was curious to what was so important she had to call in the middle of a mission, or maybe it was for the mission...? He couldn’t ask while the middle of the lobby, so he jingled the room key in front of Ruby, to show he was ready to go. “Ready, Honey?” She has been calling him random pet names all night, he could do it too. They didn’t have a suitcase, or anything like that. No change of clothes, no nothing, Jacob’s plan was to not spend the night, just stay around long enough to kill the target and leave before anyone noticed. He called the elevator so they would go first to their room and get settled, waiting for Ruby to join him before pressing the button to the third floor.

It's a date! There's murder involved So the building did have cameras. Or perhaps it was just the private offices that were deemed important enough to be watched. Was it a result of cutting down costs? Or people genuinely thought no one would do something really horrible at the main hall, so security there was unnecessary. When Ruby pointed the camera out, it was natural to look at the direction she mentioned, but Jacob stopped the action midway through, looking at the woman instead, he nodded in acknowledgement, so they needed to be careful with what was said and done here. Jacob disliked immensely that there was someone recording his face, but he couldn’t exactly destroy the camera, that would appear suspicious. Maybe the target would want some privacy, or maybe he was using this room as storage for his briefcase. “Apparently, he does. Unless he left this here on purpose, the door was locked.” He answered Ruby while rummaging through Mr. white’s things some more, but he couldn’t find anything else of value. “Nah, Key is the only thing interesting.” He looked closer at the picture when Ruby commented on it, the people in the photo looked happy, a shame, these kids growing up without a father, too bad Jacob didn’t really care. “Should’ve thought about them before pissing off dangerous people.” He said in a low voice so only Ruby would hear, a smirk on his face. He placed all the things back inside the suitcase carefully, so it would look like no one had touched it. They didn’t need to take anything in there with them, it was just an information gathering kind of thing. It was smart of them to leave early, so they would have time to look around the target’s hotel room and decide the best course of action. “Oh god, no more mingling, please.” He playfully grimaced at the idea, already bored of just thinking about entertaining some random rich guest. He calmly went to the door, opening it again and gesturing for Ruby to exit the room like a gentleman holding the door for a lady. They would have to stay in the room provided, true. It hadn’t crossed his mind that possibility would come true, in his mind the job would be quite simple, even if the staging an accidental death made things a bit more difficult, he thought it would be quick enough so the hotel room would be unnecessary. Turns out they would be sharing a room then. “A phone call? So mysterious…” He teased her “Do you wanna wait until we’re not being watched?” It could be either an innocent call to a friend because she was going to miss something, or it could be something not meant for unwary ears. The walk downstairs was uneventful, Jacob went as far as pleasant nod at the guard who watched the staircase. There was a soft music playing, and people danced on main hall, Jacob would rather avoid that entirely, the ridiculous he suffered on the masquerade was enough to last him a lifetime. They only had to walk to the entrance of the building, and from there it was a short walk to the hotel.

It's a date! There's murder involved Things could be so much easier if people decided to wander into places by themselves. As it was, Jacob and Ruby had to bide their time, find the right moment to kill the target and make it seem he did something stupid. It wasn’t as easy, Mr. White appeared to be very popular, the kind of person who inspired attention, made people flock to them naturally. Jacob wasn’t sure what he made to sign his death sentence, but he figured even charismatic rich people made enemies. It didn’t matter, in the end, he had to die, and Jacob didn’t ask many questions. There were many ways to die that could be found in an empty room. Slipping and hit one’s head, tripping and falling through the window… They just had to get creative. As the target passed by them, Ruby was quick to get into character, her hand going to his shoulder, playfully tugging on one if his curls. Only a happy couple, looking for a moment away from the crowd, no reason for Mr. White to pay them any attention. He was looking at where the man had disappeared downstairs thoughtfully, and Ruby teasing broke him from his musings, and he realized he still had his arm around her. “Right, sorry.” He hastily let her go, not meeting her eyes. He went to towards the room the target had exited, still pointedly not looking at Ruby. It was stupid, he knew, to be embarrassed for so little. Focus on the job, that was what Jacob had to do. The door was locked, and he peeked through the keyhole to make sure it was empty, before he attempted to pick the lock. It was quite simple, and the door swung open soundlessly, allowing the criminal to enter. It was a spacious office, with a desk, a few chairs, and a couch in one of the corners. Dark blue curtains stopped any light from entering the window, and also gave the room some privacy. At first glance nothing seemed out of ordinary, like Mr. White had used the room but had no intentions of returning. “You think he’ll return?” he asked distractedly to Ruby, as he opened the empty drawers on the desk. It would be strange for the man to actually have a private room in a building on the University, but Jacob really thought they could find something. He let out an annoyed sigh after looking behind the curtain, seeing the garden where a few people mingled through the window. He was about to tell Ruby they should go back to the party, perhaps tail the target until an opportunity presented itself, but something caught his attention on the corner of his eye. It turned out to be a briefcase, innocently sitting beside the couch. Only one person that could belong to. “Would you look at that...” He said approaching it. Upon opening the thing, he found a lot of unimportant papers, a wallet with an ID, some money and a picture of the target with two children, and a hotel key. He showed the last item to Ruby. “It’s the same hotel we are suppose to stay in as part of the undercover” He commented looking at the room number. “We can always get him there. Room 202.” It would be a good place to stage a death, since it was likely he would be alone.

It's a date! There's murder involved Assassinating was a fun business, Jacob liked to kill and he was great at it, he never regretted getting into this life. Planning, executing, seeing the brief fear in the victim’s eyes before his knife drove into their heart and the person fell dead, Jacob lived for that. But there was some moments, between planning and killing, the preparing everything, the finding the right moment, the waiting, the looking into a hundred rooms because you had lost your target, those moments were not fun. It was tedious and left too much room for error. Jacob looked at the long corridor with a sigh, Ruby’s mumble enough to indicate she did not enjoy it either, but it had to be done. As she asked him to, Jacob took the left after a curt nod in her direction. These were meant to be used as private rooms, from what he understood, if people wanted to unwind or chat a little more privately, he figured. Most of them should be empty offices. Ruby brought her latex gloves, even offering a pair for Jacob to use. “No need, thanks. Got my own.” He was a professional, after all. He took his usual gloves from his pockets, the dark cloth would be enough to avoid any fingerprints. The first few rooms he checked turned out to be empty offices, he barely payed attention to what was inside before closing the door and going to the next. He looked at Ruby curiously when she hastily closed one of her doors. “What’s wrong?” He asked clueless to what could cause such an extreme reaction. The next door he tried was locked, and he peeked through the keyhole, there was an old man sleeping on one of the chairs, or perhaps he was simply dead, Jacob didn’t know or care, since it wasn’t his target. Jacob was startled from trying to peek through another keyhole, by a door opening a little far from him and a voice echoing down the corridor. He straightened himself, going to where Ruby was. He grabbed her by the waist hastily, trying to steer her away from looking suspicious by the doors. His intention was to make them look like any other couple who wanted some private time, so he kept close to his supposed fiancée, smiling and pretending he was absolutely meant to be there. To his surprise it was the target who exited the room, with a pretty red haired woman who was giggling to whatever the man had said. The two passed without a second glance at Ruby and Jacob, ‘It’ll only be a second, dear’ was what he was saying while climbing down the stairs. Jacob had to decide if he would follow the target, or investigate the room the man had just exited. Considering they couldn’t exactly kill the man in the middle of a crowded room, and the party had barely started downstairs, meaning Mr. White would have to stay longer, Jacob decided it would be better to investigate the room. “We should see if can find anything to work with in that room” He told Ruby after he was certain no one else was around, it didn’t cross his mind that he didn’t need to keep his hand on her waist any longer.

It's a date! There's murder involved Walk upstairs was not an option, and from what Jacob could see, it was the only way up. He walked away from the guard who watched the staircase, to anyone looking he seemed collected, there was no reason for him to want to go upstairs, it was simply a mistake. Ruby responded to his summon, in a minute she said, her voice suggesting she was up to something. He scanned the room, trying to find his partner. Whatever idea she just had, he would let her do it, but he’d like to know if she was nearby, in case she needed assistance or something like that. She was a few meters away, in a more secluded corner of the room, talking with some stranger. She was awfully close to him, getting into his personal space, her hands delicately running through his body. Jacob crossed his arms, a slight glare on his face as he waited for Ruby to do whatever she was planning. He caught she take something from his pocket, but was too far away to identify what it was. It was so stupid how people, more specifically men, got easily distracted by a pretty face. The world could be exploding around them, but as long he had the presence of woman at his side, nothing else mattered. He rolled his eyes at how easily Ruby got what she wanted and the man was dismissed. If things were always that simple. A VIP tag, that was the prize. With that they would have access to the upstairs rooms, until the someone saw the name on the tag and the man reported the theft. They still had time, and hopefully it would be enough to finish the mission. “Nice going, and here was I thinking we would need to distract the guard somehow and sneak past him.” Jacob commented when she was close by. Sometimes the solution to problems was quite simple, and involved seducing fools. That little display only proved bringing Ruby was the right idea. Would it be suspicious to approach the guard so soon, now bearing a VIP permission? Perhaps, if Jacob was the one carrying it. But since it was Ruby who had the tag, maybe he wouldn’t even question it. Security seemed to be quite lax in this event. No cameras, only a handful of guards that looked better equipped to deal with drunken problem guests than real threats. It was like no one expected anything seriously bad to happen, Jacob was glad to prove them wrong. He walked once again towards the guard, gesturing for Ruby to show the tag to him. “We just need to step up for a bit.” He smiled pleasantly, the guard looked at him oddly, but said nothing and gave a passing glance at the VIP badge before letting them through. It wasn’t a long flight of stairs, and when he reached the top, there was a long corridor, closed doors left and right, and Jacob had no clue which one the target was holed up. At least it wasn’t crowded up there, so it should be easier to spot the man. “We’ll just have to look inside the room, one by one.” He told Ruby, a resigned tone on his voice. How long until someone noticed something wrong about them being upstairs and the guards came to interfere? He didn’t know, it could be an hour or twenty minutes, but it was bound to happen.

It's a date! There's murder involved The older gentleman was happy to tell his story, involving priests, Adam and Eve, and childish stories. He looked so happy to be sharing these things with Ruby and him, it made Jacob wonder if he didn’t have others to listen to him prattle, like a kids and grandkids. He only paid half a mind to what was being said, more worried in looking for his target, he nodded and smiled at the right parts, it made him feel a little closer to all the fake people and their fake pleasantries. Compared to this couple, with their stories and mannerism, Jacob and Ruby were quite young. How old were they, anyway? Sixty? Seventy? He wasn’t sure, but although the Scotsman forgot his manners, Jacob didn’t care enough to do the same, their ages were inconsequential. Unlike Ruby’s, her birthday would be soon, near Christmas, he hadn’t known her exact age, but he could’ve guessed she was younger than him. She was still older than the brat called Shaun Bianchi, so Jacob had nothing to complain. It was strange to see how well they played these games, pretending to be part of high society, a successful couple, ready to throw their money at whatever strike their fancy. Ruby’s pleasant words, Jacob’s friendly smiles, in a way he could say he was wearing a mask, after all. They didn’t have to dilly dally with the couple for long, the old lady saw someone familiar on the crowd, and ushered her husband to go attend to that. “Thank you ma’am. I was wonderful meeting you” He managed to cringe just a little when she patted his cheek gently. “That was… something. I think we’re meant to these kind of gatherings” He said after they were gone, his voice low so only Ruby would hear. He followed Ruby in placing his glass of champagne on a nearby table, it was only for show, he had no intentions of getting drunk, no chances were to be taken while in the middle of a job. “Yes, splitting sounds like a good idea.” He nodded, looking around the room cautiously. They still had the ear pieces in case they needed to communicate. He shot her a smile before picking a direction to go look. He walked calmly, his eyes scanning the crowd, sometimes he would stop and exchange a few words with random people, sometimes someone would greet him and he would have stop and have brief conversations. He hoped Ruby had more luck on her side. At least twenty minutes had passed before finally things started to show promise. He caught a glimpse of someone who looked like his target. Elegant and well poised, it was like he commanded attention around him, a small group had stopped to listen to whatever story he was telling. Jacob politely excused himself from the woman he suspected was trying to flirt with him. He made his way through the crowd, with excuse-me’s and I’m sorry’s, his hand went to his earpiece. “I think I see him, near the big staircase.” He informed Ruby lowly, no one seemed to be any the wiser Jacob was up to something. It was a bit difficult to maneuver through the people, so by the time he got close to Mr. White, he seemed to already to be done saying whatever to his little followers, and was making his way upstairs. Jacob couldn’t let that opportunity escape, he glanced behind him briefly, to see if Ruby was nearby, before he attempted to follow the target. He was stopped by one of the guards standing at the foot of the staircase. ‘I’m sorry sir, this area is off limits’ Jacob smiled, apologizing for that. His target was not visible anymore, and he let out a sigh of frustration.

It's a date! There's murder involved Perhaps Jacob should’ve researched more about this event before coming. He had been a bit pressed for time, running around trying to find a decent suit, trying to memorize all the details of the mission, it hadn’t crossed his mind to look up more about what kind of charity he was supposed to pretend to care about. He hoped nobody asked any specific question from him, there was only so much Jacob could bullshit his way through a conversation and dance around questions he didn’t have an answer for. Did anyone here even knew what the charity was about, anyway? Jacob figured most people here were more interested in making their image better by throwing money into supposedly good causes. At least this couple was okay. They seemed used to this kind of event, like they had too much money and time in their hands, and actually used that for good instead of just using it for status. Jacob could respect that, he had become a bit jaded after spending so much time around the Bianchi and their associates, and although he would never call himself a good person, it didn’t mean there weren’t nice people out there that deserved better in this world, they were just hard to find. Ruby choose the name Eva, it was short and simple to remember, and it somehow provoked some sort of trip down memory lane for the older gentleman. It was kind of cute how the old lady seemed almost embarrassed by her husband’s antics. He didn’t mind the chatter, it was a way to pass the time, let more people arrive, more importantly, let his target arrive or give him a chance to appear near them. “Of course, do tell us more.” He caught Ruby’s look, and smiled pleasantly at the nice couple. “We have two days to mingle and do other stuff, no hurry.” He reassured the woman. He did not expect the age question, wasn’t it considered rude to ask people’s ages, especially from women? Maybe when people grow old they just lose all inhibitions. “I just turned 32 recently.” Which wasn’t that young, really, some people got married in their early twenties. Before Ruby could answer however, the gentleman’s wife interrupted him. “don’t be rude, dear, you don’t ask a lady her age” she chided gently, giving a small slap on his arm that looked more fond than mad. “don’t mind the rude old man, sometimes he forgets his manners.” She said to Ruby with an exasperated smile. While the conversation went on, Jacob discretely let his eyes wander around the room, leisurely looking for his target. There were so many people though, and more and more arrived. How was Jacob supposed to find one man amidst the crowd?

It's a date! There's murder involved If Ruby and Jacob got married and they forced Max to attend the wedding, the cop would probably cry in jealousy and then go have a self-pity party because he missed his chance with them both. It was a little sad to think about, actually. “Honored isn’t the exact word I would use.” Max certainly was the kind of person with too many morals to try to pursue a married person. It was all stupid what if scenarios, of course, Jacob had no intentions of getting married, least of all with Ruby Blackwood. Insecure was not a way to describe Ruby, that was the truth. And she was beautiful enough that she was the one who would probably cause jealousy. But more importantly, she had more things to worry about than some unspoken competition flared by envy and pettiness. Like look for their target, who remained as elusive as ever. Jacob almost wished Mr. White was an extravagant man who thought purple was appropriate for a fancy charity event. That would make it so much easier to spot him among the numerous black and white guests. Even people who didn’t often go to these boring fancy party, it was quite simple to turn up the charm and pretend everything was pleasant and nice. It was like a switch was pressed when the older couple approached Jacob and Ruby, their friendly smile making an appearance as they did their best to look like they belonged in this kind of ambient. It wasn’t so difficult to exchange pleasantries with the couple, the topics were innocent and they seemed oddly excited to participate in this event, much to Jacob’s silent disbelief. The man’s pleasant Scottish brogue only made him sound more fancy as he introduced himself. Jacob accepted the handshake, it was brief and firm, without being painful. The older gentleman took Ruby’s hand, planting a kiss on it, like a proper greeting, Jacob did the same with the other lady, somehow making it look like it was intention all along. “A pleasure, as well, I’m Leonard Klein, and this is my fiancée.” He would let Ruby introduce herself and choose if she wanted to give her name or come up with an alias on the spot. His alias came out naturally, Jacob was used to not giving out his true name, having something to offer instead was nice for a change. Maybe he should use fake names more often. “Leonard Klein, I’ve heard of that name before, so young and already so successful” Jacob smiled, doubting the truth in the man’s words, but that was the game played, wasn’t it? Politics and ass kissing.

It's a date! There's murder involved The idea of kneeling in front of Ruby to ask her to marry him was hilarious in his head. He simply could not fathom the woman in a white dress in front of a priest declaring her loyalty and love to someone, least of all himself. He had no idea what kind ceremonies Jewish people did when getting married, but he was sure it would also look out of place if done by Ruby. “Of course, I wouldn’t do any other way. Do you think Max would accept being my best man?” That would be a sight to behold, how long until the cop cried from jealousy? As much a ruby tried to explain the logic behind girlfriends in fancy parties, Jacob just could understand. The woman would feel intimidated by other’s prettiness? Sounded stupidly insecure and not worthy anyone’s time, but he would take Ruby’s word to it “Will you feel insecure around all the pretty rich women, though?” He teased her with a smirk, he couldn’t see Ruby acting jealous over other girls’ prettiness, She would be more interested in finding the target and killing him, probably. Killing was always more interesting than being petty and worrying about looks. The longer Jacob looked around all these rich people, showing off their money and chit chatting about inconsequential things, the more he had flashbacks of the Bianchi masquerade. The snobs, the thinly veiled contempt, the less than genuine smiles, it was all very familiar. At least that was how Jacob saw the interactions in these kind of events, he couldn’t understand why people would bother to come to these kind of parties without a good reason. With Ruby on his arm, they were ready to start the hunt. Jacob immediately understood what she was doing, his cousin, it is. “I don’t see him either. Maybe he’s late?” The party had just started, after all. Or he was in another part of the building, perhaps one of the VIP rooms. They couldn’t stand around gaping at the place all night, they needed to blend in. Jacob grabbed two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter, and offered one to Ruby, glad that this event was not sponsored by the Bianchi and their tiger piss. “What’s your opinion on mingling?” He asked her, an amused smirk on his lips, seeing a couple approaching the two of them. He was sure Ruby was capable of pretending to be a refined young lady, it didn’t mean she enjoyed it, Jacob certainly didn’t. But there was a chance one of the other guests knew about the target. “Evening Sir, Ma’am” Jacob greeted, a pleasant smile on his face, and the couple was happy to engage them, inquiring about the party and their opinions on these kind of events.

It's a date! There's murder involved “You look very nice yourself” It was not even a lie, surprisingly enough, blue fit her really well, and the way her a tattoo could be seen by the open back was a nice touch. He pried his eyes away from her, to anyone watching they were just a young couple meeting, getting ready for a fancy party, nothing suspicious. He caught the eye of some of the people puttering around, they greeted him with a nod, and Jacob just smiled at them and moved on. Why were charity people so nice and polite? Nothing like an encounter involving murder to make a girl happy. “I’m glad you have fun on these dates, I only invite you for the best ones.” He smiled satisfied, Jacob aimed to please his friends, after all. She didn’t take long to read the instructions, maybe she should pick a different name for herself as well? He would leave that for Ruby to decide. “Oh, I’m so sorry. I’ll make sure to take you to dinner first next time I have to ask something this big.” He teased right back. The horror it would be if he and Ruby got married, he would bet Max wouldn’t be too pleased. He agreed with her, that fiancée sounded more believable, but the last part left him a little confused. “If he has a girlfriend, why would it matter other people are gorgeous?” Unless the girlfriend was just for show, but then again, he would want to bring her with him. He accepted the paper back, ripping to shreds and tossed the pieces on a nearby thrash can, to avoid anyone getting a hold of it somehow at the party. It would be very inconvenient if the paper fell on the floor and some guard read it, rookie’s mistake. He was about to continue towards the entrance, but Ruby seemed to have a few ideas. He waited for her to retrieve whatever was in her purse. It turned out to a two earpieces, it was an excellent idea, Jacob would like to use these more often, but he didn’t really had access to these kinds of technology, and he rarely worked with other people anyway. In any case, he knew how to work the device, or at least he had a pretty good idea. He hooked his earpiece on his ear, flattening his hair to try to somewhat conceal it, but his hair was not as long as Ruby’s. People usually didn’t really pay close attention to such accessories, or they found excuses as to why a man would have it, so he wasn’t really worried. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to make you deaf. You wouldn't be able to hear the screams of your victims, that's just cruel.” He offered her his arm, before approaching the entrance where a man was welcoming the guests and checking the invitations. It was very simple to enter there, the guard gave them a pleasant nod “Mr. Klein, Miss, welcome” Jacob answered with a nod and a pleasant smile, nobody seemed to suspect anything, they didn’t even make a very thorough search before allowing them inside. The room already had a fair number of people inside, there was a pleasant music filling the ambient, and guest mingled and chatted amongst themselves. Immediately Jacob noted it wouldn’t be so simple to find Jack White among the crowd. The place was huge, and he had no idea where the man would be, or if he even had arrived already.
