History
Nathan Daniel Cross was born on March 4th, 1994 to Julianne and Charles Cross in Manhattan, New York. They were a powerful family, mostly built on money and partnerships. Even his parents' marriage was arranged. It was just a facade for them to gain power, nothing more than a signed contract and a fancy party in order to make the others think they loved each other. Both came from very powerful families, and all they did was take advantage of each other. The money and the power were never enough, they always wanted more, they wanted to be the best. Despite all this, the two were not similar at all - while his mother tried to make them look like a family, his father couldn't care less of what the others thought.
But if there was one thing both agreed on, it was that they needed an heir. They were aware of the fact that someone had to take over what they built, so a child was a must. And not just a child, but a boy, as the tradition in their family was a little different. Girls were not allowed to take over the family's business. So imagine their happiness when the nurse announced that their child was a boy. Their first and only child, their very own heir. Because that's how they treated him, like an object. Something precious they owned, just another pawn in their game.
Even after he was born, his father didn't improve his behaviour. He became even more cold, and Julianne got so sick of his attitude that she decided it was not worth it. While all the nannies took care of Nate, his father locked himself into his office or left in the middle of the night to finish work while his mother started seeing other people just to keep herself entertained, saying that 'being a mother was very, very tiring', when, in fact, she did nothing but go shopping and have fun with her friends.
His parents never tried to show him the affection a kid needed, they didn't care. They had everything they wanted, he wasn't one of their priorities anymore because he was already there. As long as he was alive, everything was just fine. they were not even thinking about how he felt to be left all by himself. They were way too busy anyway, right? Work was important. Dating was important. Meetings were important. Their child? Not so much, at least not for them.
Nathan grew up surrounded by everything he hated, and his parents thought that buying him all he wanted was going to solve the problem. Make it disappear like it never existed. Because their idea of happiness was buying some toys and throwing them across his room, right near the old ones. They never understood him, and they never tried to. Nate tried to ignore the fact that his life was a complete mess, but it was almost impossible to ignore the fights and the loneliness. Even from a young age he knew that there was no point in trying to convince his parents to actually listen to him and not just nod and tell him they were busy.
It all became worse when he started going to school. His parents stopped talking to each other unless it was something about work, other than that, they acted like the other one didn't exist. Julianne finally gave up on the idea of a perfect family and accepted the truth , they were no family because there was no love between them. Only a contract, lots of money and a child. Things that also stopped her from divorcing, since she didn't want to lose everything. So she continued to act like the perfect wife and smile all day no matter what happened. Charles continued working very hard and Nate.. well, he started getting intro trouble. All the lack of affection and everything in his life started showing, and being one of those energetic children, no one could really control his behaviour. But all he wanted was his parents to care about him- To pay attention. His parents blamed each other and it got nowhere. He kept doing the same things, and the situation got pretty bad until he got into a fight for pulling a prank on a kid from his class. It ended up with someone getting hurt- and it wasn't him.
The moment his parents entered the principal's office, Nate knew something was going to change. And it was pretty clear that his parents were highly disappointed of him and his actions - The look of pure disgust his father gave him and the tears in his mother's eyes . He knew he fucked up. And he was right, because just some hours later, his father announced him that he was going to military school so that he could 'stop being so childish, grow up and stop causing trouble'. He didn't want to admit it was his fault as well, so he preferred to blame Nate for everything. The very next day he packed up his things and sent him away without any hesitation. He wanted a perfect son and the military school was going to make him that way, even if he liked it or not.
As expected, the child was not made for that kind of life. He was young, scared, with no one to tell him everything was fine. So he did his best to survive, but never really became what they wanted. And seeing no other choice, they started beating him up, trying to make him understand that he had to change if he wanted everything to be fine. And the beating kept going for quite a long time until, one day, something inside him suddenly snapped, and he fought back, this time desperate not to lose the fight. So desperate to save himself from another humiliating moment that he grabbed a gun and pointed it at the man standing in front of him. Nathan had no idea what he was doing, but the man's laugh just reminded him of how much he hated that place, all the bruises and all the screams.
Everything just came back and he fell down, the gun near him as tears rolled down his cheeks. And the guard took his gun back and started hitting again even if he saw that the teenager was not even capable of getting up. He was a coward. And there he was again, laughing and crying in the same time, blood covering his face. But he was not going to allow himself to fall or to look like a fool again. And he respected his words, as the next time it happened, he did the same, grabbing the gun and pointing it at the man. Only this time he didn't give the guard the satisfaction of seeing him cry. And when he tried to grab the gun Nathan held in his hand, he pulled the trigger and killed the guy then watched horrified as the body fell to the floor with a loud thud, his head making a numbing, cracking noise, crimson red blood pooling around his body, painting his old, green uniform.
Nathan didn't want that. He didn't want to kill him. It was not his fault - It happened so fast. So fast that he couldn't process what was happening.. so fast that he acted without even thinking about it. And now he found himself in the empty room, with a body next to him, ready to be found by the other guard that probably heard all the noise. The silence was killing him and he couldn't take his eyes off the dead body. He killed that man without blinking an eye. He knew it wasn't his fault, but he kept repeating the same word. Over and over again. 'Murderer'
According to the doctors that saw him, he was so ill, so broken that no one could fix him. There was no more hope for him. He just looked at the ceiling and sometimes moved his gaze on the clock hanging from the wall, checking the hour then going back to his thoughts, wondering how to deal with what he did, isolating himself from anyone, not answering any questions (or talking at all). He didn't even bother to look at the people trying to talk to him- He acted like he was the only one there. Him and his thoughts.
Every time he tried to rest, he closed his eyes and saw that guard die. And when he managed to fall asleep, the nightmares usually woke him up. The guilt was eating him alive, and he attempted suicide just some days later. No one was surprised, but they managed to keep him alive and get him to a hospital. His parents didn't even bother to show up, they were so embarrassed
of him that they didn't want to see him. And, of course, no one could find out about what he did if they didn't want a huge scandal.
Soon after the incident, he started feeling even more guilty. The nightmares only made it worse, and it slowly drove him insane. He had to apologise and tell the man he killed that he didn't want to, that it was just an accident. So in a rage attack, a moment of pure insanity, he killed someone else to make that person 'go there and tell that man he killed that he didn't mean it'. Luckily, no one linked him to the new murder because of the damages the first one caused.
Soon everyone started ignoring him, even after he started talking again, he preferred to stay away from everyone. And they did the same. He built a wall around him, and no one minded. For them, he was a freak, and for him, they were the freaks. Everyone thought he was crazy, so even the guards avoided him, no one really wanted to stay around.
But everything changed when he decided to go for a walk near the gates, just to see what was happening outside since he heard some screams coming from somewhere near the school. And just some seconds later, some people wearing masks passed by the metal bars and went in the direction of some cars that were parked not far from there. Of course, he soon realised it was probably a robbery, and he started laughing at how stupid the guards were, not seeing what was happening. Of course, everyone ignored him, not even paying attention to what he was saying, considering him insane. So he started flailing his arms through the gate, clapping at how amazing it was to see someone destroy the place he hated so much.
That's when one of the members of that group turned around, curious about what was happening. And she probably felt bad for him or had a spot for protecting the outlaw children, but she walked near the gate, took him her gun and her mask then smiled- The blonde was probably the first person he saw smiling after spending so much time locked there. And then she kissed his forehead then turned around, disappearing with the others. And he couldn't help but feel happy that someone was finally showing him affection. A stranger. Not his parents. Or anyone else. But a stranger.
And that gave him hope. He made sure no one knew about the gun, and then he started planning his escape. Nate was always interested in creating the perfect plan, so that just gave him the opportunity of trying to do it . He counted how many seconds the guard's break took, what was the shortest way until the entrance. He knew everything, so when he finally felt prepared, he waited for the right moment then got out of his room, the mask covering his face as he ran down the halls, making sure no one stood in his way, killing some unlucky students that were walking in the direction of the dorms. And his plan turned out to be perfect, as he got out of there just in time, stole a car and disappeared.
And he kept his profile low for two or three years because survival was the most important of them all. He started with pickpocketing and small robberies, nothing important as he didn't want any unwanted attention. He kept looking for those people back there ( at the gates) even if his intentions were still unclear. He found what they did rather exciting, and that was what he was looking for. Something fun to do with his life, because everything else was just boring. He knew his place was not out there, in society, and most certainly not in his parents' world. He wanted something special, something dangerous.. something to fit the person he had become. A heartless maniac. A cold blooded killer. A psychopath.
When he got bored of 'pickpocketing', he decided to try something more exciting.. like murder. It wasn't like he didn't do it before, why not? The rush, the feeling in the pit of his stomach.. He just loved to watch them struggle to run away before dying right in front of his eyes, most of the time slowly and painfully while he watched them closely, enjoying every moment of it. His own personal show. Police soon started searching for him, but it was almost impossible as the place where those people died was filled with criminals, and with no leads, they had no other chance but to close that case and put it near the other -unsolved- ones. Every time he killed someone, he saw his parents dying.. and he couldn't help but laugh and feel happy about it.
And then, he finally realised what he actually wanted was to kill them. And the timing was perfect, because they were throwing a party at their new house, and many people, mostly friends, were invited to participate. Nate just couldn't resist the urge, so he took his mask, a gun, some gloves and made sure everyone was inside when he also entered, not even spending another second before he started shooting, eventually killing all of them except his beloved parents. And what a joy! The moment he took off his mask, his parents just froze. They knew what he was capable of, but not even them begging for their lives stopped him. And he thought burning them alive would be fun. But then he thought it would be even funnier to make one watch the other die before sharing the same fate. So he didn't spend any more time- He covered them both in gasoline, and the first one was his father. His mother just watched terrified as he died, before the same happened to her, the screams of pain filling the room as Nate got out of there, stepping over the bodies lying on the floor, proud of himself and happy that he finally got rid of them. And who cared? No one.
After that, he met a man that used to be part of Enigma, and he offered to help him find them. And that was not all, as Nathan soon joined them, amazed of the war and everything going around, happy to finally join what he was looking for and be part of a world where no one judged him for what he did. For now, he is trying to adjust to his new life, survive and.. taste the freedom, because that's why he joined in the first place.
